Production of the memorial piece, known as the "Universal Medallion," was initiated by the Black Industrial and Economic Union spearheaded by Black film star Jim Brown. Between 800 and 1,000 students gathered for the rally where the two Black sprinters were the main speakers. Robert Clark, president of San Jose State, stated earlier shortly after the U.S. Olympic Committee had taken action against Smith and Carlos, that "they do not return in disgrace but as Olympic heroes." Blacks from communities throughout the United States responded to the protest demonstration staged by Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the victory ceremonies after the 200 meters, by sending letters and telegrams to the Village and their residences. Appendix B The Revolt on the Campus University of California at Berkeley Ray Willsey, Head Coach Varsity Football Athletic Department Eshleman Hall University of California Berkeley, California COACH RAY WILLSEY: It has become unmistakenly obvious that in some areas of coaching the practice of favoritism and inequity, which permeated last year's team, STILL EXISTS. It is no secret to anyone, especially those that know football, that last year's victim of favoritism and ineq- 142 uity was Wayne Brooks, who was completely blackballed as an offensive player and possibly this year as a defensive player. We have also painfully watched, in utter disgust, such great competitors as Bernie Keeles, McKinley Parker, Clyde Flowers, and George Harris become similar victims. In reference to Bernie Keeles, in particular, we feel that he should be in contention for the starting position and not relegated to third and fourth string. This nation has shown that it is ready to accept Blacks as quarterbacks and the University of California must also. We, the Black athletes, want a winning team. We want the best twenty-two players on the field. We want the best player in each position. THIS HAS NOT BEEN DONE. As stated on our first set of demands (of Black athletes), we will not tolerate the forestated situations and practices. WE WILL NOT PLAY ON ANY TEAM THAT PERPETRATES THESE PRAC TICES. We demand significant changes in the Fall. We know the community is behind us. As a show of good faith and because a few noticeable steps have been made in the athletic department in meeting our past demands, we will attempt to keep our grievances out of the mass media and the public eye.
