Carlos was immortalized in an engraved medallion produced<br />

by Power Inc., a metal manufacturing company.<br />

Production of the memorial piece, known as the "Universal<br />

Medallion," was initiated by the Black Industrial<br />

and Economic Union spearheaded by Black film star<br />

Students here sponsored a large rally in honor of Tommie<br />

Smith and John Carlos. Between 800 and 1,000<br />

students gathered for the rally where the two Black<br />

sprinters were the main speakers. Robert Clark, president<br />

of San Jose <strong>State</strong>, stated earlier shortly after the<br />

U.S. Olympic Committee had taken action against<br />

Smith and Carlos, that "they do not return in disgrace<br />

but as Olympic heroes."<br />

Radio) . Blacks from communities throughout the<br />

United <strong>State</strong>s responded to the protest demonstration<br />

staged by Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the victory<br />

ceremonies after the 200 meters, by sending letters and<br />

telegrams to the Village and their residences. Welcoming<br />

ceremonies were staged and carried out in New York<br />

City, Washington, D.C., and San Jose, California.<br />
