OU. Jones said he would need time to consider the complaints before issuing a reply. But he did say: "I consider this a friendly meeting from my standpoint. We discussed what the athletes considered mistreatment." The athletes said they had no plan to quit their sports or classes at OU. One request was for separate meetings with all the head coaches which Jones said he would try to arrange. Another was that the coaches did not treat Negro athletes with respect. One of the written requests presented to Jones said: "Why are there no Black counselors, coaches, trainers, secretaries and managers in the athletic department?" Other complaints were that Negro athletes were coerced to cut their hair short and shave off mustaches; Negro athletes were held responsible by many of the coaches when games were lost; Negro athletes were given less leisure time on trips than white athletes, and common courtesies were not extended to Negroes on campus. Granville Liggins, Associated Press All-American Football Player, was identified as one of the principal spokesmen for the Negro athletes in the meeting with Jones. Liggins denied there had been any outside influence leading to the request for an airing of grievances. "We have banded together," Liggins said, "to present these grievances. There's no organization behind this." Norman, Oklahoma (United Press International). Gomer Jones, athletic director at Oklahoma University, Monday that the Sooner athletic department believed in and endorsed the movement for equal opportunity, an? he said he thought sports at OU had provided the qUIckest way for Negroes to secure social reform. Jones and Oklahoma's head coaches met with a group of Negro athletes Monday who boycotted an "0" Club banquet last week. Jones said after the meeting Oklahoma was "proud of its Negro athletes and of their feats." Jones distributed a three-page statement following the meeting, but refused a press conference. "Noth- The Revolt of the Black Athlete • 164 ing can be accomplished by continuing this discussion with the press," Jones said. "The statement explains our full position on this matter." In the statement, Jones said the university might be at fault in two areas-advising against interracial dating although it was not forbidden, and the need for employing additional Negro personnel throughout the university. However, he commented individually upon 20 of the 27 grievances listed by the OU Negro athletes, and explained the university's stand on them. He said in the future he hopes any athlete at the university, Negro or white, would feel free to approach either him or a head coach with any problem. "Now is the time for both our white and Negro groups to realize they have many mutual problems, and that they should exercise common sense in disposing of them," Jones said in the statement. The University of Michigan promoted Dave Martin to head track and field coach today to take over July 1 when Don Canham steps up to succeed retiring H. O. "Fritz" Crisler as athletic director. The University also announced appointment of its first Negro to a varsitylevel coaching job, naming Ken Burnley, a former Wolverine sprinter, as an assistant to Martin, who was elevated from assistant to the head coaching job. Also named as an assistant to Martin was Jack Harvey, twotime Big Ten Shotput champion. At nearby Kalamazoo, meanwhile, Western Michigan University announced selection of two Negroes among three new varsity assistant coaches to be recommended to the Board of Trustees Friday. The University of Southern California announced Friday the appointment of Willie Brown, a former star football and baseball player at the school, as an assistant coach in both sports. He is the first Negro named to the coaching staff. Athletic Director Jess Hill said in a statement: "We have felt a need existed at the University of Southern California for another assistant football coach and an assistant baseball coach. Willie Brown is well qualified in both of these areas and we feel he will be a most capable addition to our coaching staff."
