Faiths and Further Education:A HandbookAnnex F:Sample Chaplaincy Job Description and Person SpecificationJob DescriptionReporting to:Head of Student Support ServicesDivisional Leader for GuidanceMain contacts:Students of the collegePersonal and course tutorsCentral student support services staffRelevant external agencies or partnersMain purpose of the jobTo maintain the functions and services supplied by a multi-faithchaplaincy for students and staff within the collegeMain duties• Maintaining a variety of services and facilities which support amulti-faith chaplaincy within the college (including chaplaincyrooms, facilitating faith groups, publicising a calendar of festivalsand key dates for a variety of faiths, supporting studentinductions, maintaining specific reading resources, etc)• Offering pastoral care in cases of real need to students whochoose to be referred or self-refer and contributing to studentsupport groups as appropriate• Supporting students with faith issues either as individuals orgroups• Contributing to tutorial or other appropriate curriculumprogrammes with regard to faith issues by negotiation withpersonal or course tutors• Contributing to staff development and the raising of awarenessof multi-faith issues for staff as required• Liaising with external agencies and partners regarding issues offaith to maintain access to these as a resource and to maintainthe College’s profile within local faith communities• Working productively and co-operatively as a member ofdepartmental and college teams• Keeping accurate and up-to-date statistics and other records andsupplying reports or returns as required by the line manager fordifferent purposes• Actively supporting College and departmental policies andprocedures, including those regarding equality of opportunity,diversity and social inclusion• Carrying out any other duties that may be required by thedepartment or College to meet changing circumstances.Person specification (chaplain)Minimum essential requirements –skills/knowledge/experienceThe candidate should have:• An accepted standing within at least one faith community (thismay be a formal qualification and/or extensive experience offaith work and/or other indication of some leadership statuswithin a faith community)• A clear and proven commitment to multi-faith working and anexcellent understanding of issues to do with diversity and socialinclusion• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills includingempathy, listening skills and the ability to interact successfullywith a wide range of people, including those for whom English isnot their first language• The ability to work co-operatively and proactively with otherstaff and external agencies• A sound knowledge of the beliefs and traditions of a range offaiths which students are likely to belong to or engage with• The ability to work independently, flexibly and self-critically• Sound written skills and the ability to use a computer for wordprocessing,email and other basic functions.
