Faiths and Further Education:A HandbookProcedures for applying for recognition as a College chaplain orreligious representativeABCDEFGHThe following procedure shall apply in the case of all newrequests for recognition including the appointment of areplacement for an existing office holder, except that where itis necessary to make such an appointment during a vacationperiod, the application will be dealt with directly by thePrincipal and Senior Management Team.Candidates wishing to apply for recognition by the College as achaplain or religious representative must apply in the firstinstance to the Management Committee of the Multi-FaithChaplaincy Centre (MFCC) who will consider all applicationsbefore referring them to the Principal and Senior ManagementTeam for a final decision.The Management Committee willnormally support an application which meets one of theconditions described in points (c) and (d) below in addition to(b).Candidates must provide personal credentials which giveevidence of their standing and support within their community.These could include, for example, evidence of study orordination as appropriate.Candidates should be proposed by a sponsoring religious body.Candidates should represent a worshipping community oncampus.If the Principal and Senior Management Team do notrecommend approval, the applicant will have the right ofappeal to the Board of Governors.Once approved, all candidates must decide whether they wishto be designated by the College as either a religiousrepresentative or a chaplain.Within their faith communities, religious representatives orchaplains may be designated as they wish.

53Annex E:Example of a Service Level Agreementbetween a Chaplaincy Team and a CollegePurpose of this agreementThe college recognises and affirms the value of the faith traditionsof its staff and students and seeks to work in partnership with faithcommunities to offer support and care for the whole collegecommunity.To this end the college currently recognises an Islamicadviser, a Jewish chaplain and an Ecumenical Chaplaincy Team, whowork under the auspices of the Student Services Department.Thecollege will continue to seek representatives from other faithtraditions that are represented in the area.The faith communities recognise the value of higher education assomething that contributes both to self-development and thedevelopment of communities.The faith communities also recognisethe role the college plays in the city and the wider region.Historically this recognition has had practical expression in thecommitment by some faith communities to work in partnershipwith the college by designating chaplains and, in one case,supporting them financially.These chaplains are independent of thecollege but work within college guidelines and policies.They alsowork together whilst recognising and respecting diverse traditions.The Ecumenical Chaplaincy Team provides services that areavailable to all members of the college. It serves all college sites,working as one team with separate provision on two main sites.Provision of ServicesThe Ecumenical Chaplaincy Team offers its services to students andto staff.These services can be grouped into four areas. For a full listof the services provided within each of these areas see theAppendix to this Annex.Pastoral care• personal support• crisis and bereavement care• international students.Spirituality• inter-faith work• worship and other religious events• spiritual development.Ethics• community building.This effective partnership has been established over many years.The purpose of this agreement is to build on and develop thispartnership by identifying the services provided by the chaplainsand the support provided by the college.
