<strong>Faiths</strong> <strong>and</strong> Further Education:A H<strong>and</strong>book5NEAFE <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Faiths</strong> in FE Forum support:• a review <strong>of</strong> the issue <strong>of</strong> SMSC development for post-14 students• SMSC development being seen in the context <strong>of</strong>, <strong>and</strong> as aresponse to, the expressed needs <strong>of</strong> learners themselves, asevidenced by the LSC research mentioned above• the right <strong>of</strong> all students (young people <strong>and</strong> adults) in the post-16learning <strong>and</strong> skills sector to have their SMSC development needsaddressed.6Thus, the wider legislative <strong>and</strong> <strong>education</strong>al context has beenoutlined <strong>and</strong> NEAFE <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Faiths</strong> in Further Education Forumpositions on these issues clearly set out.This H<strong>and</strong>book is part <strong>of</strong> astrategy to assist colleges in addressing their students’ needs in thearea <strong>of</strong> SMSC development.As the LSC has made clear in itsstrategy papers Working Together (LSC, 2004a) <strong>and</strong> Equality <strong>and</strong>Diversity Strategy (LSC, 2005b), student retention can be improvedconsiderably if students receive the support appropriate to theirethnic <strong>and</strong> faith background.
