Dear Friends:
If you or someone you know is finding it more and more difficult to hear, please
remember that professional, unbiased help is available at the Center for the
Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
From the latest in hearing aids to fully tested equipment such as amplified
phones and visual signaling devices, from speech reading and communication
strategy small group sessions to sign language classes, the Center is here to help
improve the quality of life for all those facing hearing challenges.
For families with a baby newly diagnosed with hearing loss, the Center is a place
to turn for comfort, information and counseling. Services are begun right away
since the first three years of life are the critical time for language development.
Parents are encouraged to choose the type of communication they believe will be
best for their child and family and then receive services that support their choice.
The Center could not continue to meet the growing needs of those with hearing
loss without the generous support of our contributors and volunteers. During
these challenging times, your help is more essential than ever. On behalf of all
those we serve, our heartfelt thanks.
Sincerely,
for Children with Hearing Loss and Their Families
When children are born with or develop hearing loss early in their
lives, parents often feel overwhelmed and confused about all of the
options available to help their child.
For parents in Wisconsin, CDHH is the place to find caring specialists
in hearing loss issues and unbiased information about all of the
communication options available -- from oral communication to
sign language. At CDHH, parents are respected as the true experts
on their child, and are given the information and tools they need to
decide which path is right for their child. They are then connected
with the resources and services their child needs to reach his or her
full potential.
From Birth-to-Three services to Long-Distance Auditory-Verbal
Therapy provided over the internet, CDHH helps children develop
strong language, communication and literacy skills through innovative
programs and time-tested approaches to learning.
for Adults with Hearing Loss
Whether a lifelong challenge or something brought on by age or
exposure to noise, hearing loss creates barriers to communication
for adults of all ages and in all walks of life. Hearing loss can occur
at any stage in life, and even a mild hearing loss can create difficulties
at work or in social situations. For seniors, a decline in hearing often
occurs along with other threats to independence and quality of life.
And for those whose native language is American Sign Language,
daily communication with others and accessing basic services or
finding job opportunities can often be a struggle.
For adults in Wisconsin who are challenged by hearing loss, CDHH
is the place to find the latest in hearing assistance technology, experts
in aural rehabilitation, and high-quality interpreting services to help
eliminate communication barriers and reduce the social isolation
often caused by hearing loss. CDHH provides adults with the
tools, support and advocacy skills needed to live a more active and
independent life.
for Community Education and Referral
Since hearing loss now affects more than one in ten people across all
age groups and is on the rise among young adults, hearing loss is an
emerging health issue that will continue to grow as the Baby Boomer
population ages. In Wisconsin, CDHH has an active outreach
program to help educate the community about how to prevent hearing
loss whenever possible, and how to successfully cope with hearing loss
if it does occur. CDHH also works to reduce stereotypes associated
with hearing loss and improve awareness of hearing loss issues and
Deaf Culture through community presentations and classes.
In Wisconsin, CDHH is the place that professionals, organizations
and individuals alike rely on for information and resources related to
hearing conservation, Deaf Culture or how to live better with hearing
loss. By increasing awareness and reducing the stigma associated with
hearing loss and deafness, CDHH promotes a more inclusive society
in which all members of the community can actively participate.
fundraisers
CDHH hosted two major fundraising
events in 2008, the annual Gardens
Luncheon in April and Tasting Tuesday
in August. The Center also held a
raffle to win a 2008 Smart Car. As
a private non-profit agency, these
special events, combined with
individual contributions, make up a
significant portion of the Center’s
operating revenue. Thanks to all
who attended these events and
special thanks to the businesses and
individuals that contributed financially
or in-kind to ensure their success!
CENTER for the DEAF
and HARD
OF HEARING
LEGACY SOCIETY
Become a member of
the CDHH Legacy Society
In 2004, CDHH founded the Legacy Society,
to recognize those who have included the
Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
in their estate plans. These special donors
have ensured that their lifetime of generosity
will carry on and that CDHH will receive
the financial support it needs to continue
impacting the lives of children and adults affected by hearing loss.
As the Legacy Society grows, members will be recognized and invited to
a special event each year. Of course, we will respect the wishes of those
who prefer to remain anonymous as well. If you have already included
CDHH in your estate plans, please let us know so that you can be invited
to join the Legacy Society.
Please call Dorothy Kerr at 414-604-2200 for complete details on the
Legacy Society or for additional information on planned giving options
that may benefit you as well as those served by the Center for the Deaf
and Hard of Hearing.
