leadershipwww.biztechreport.comPrasannaPatsani:Leader withPoetic Touchby Parthasarthi JenaBorn into Ghiakhala inthe famous Kh<strong>and</strong>lkotarea of Khorda, Odisha,Parliamentarian PoetPrasanna Patsani has comea long way.Kh<strong>and</strong>lkot, birthplace of the famous Annapurnatheater which made a strong statementin Odisha’s famous age-old drama traditionmade an early impact on Dr. Patsani.Born into Kaviraj <strong>and</strong> the village Sarpanch,Aniruddha Patsani, who witnessedseven of his children die, was apprehensiveof the life of Dr. Patsani <strong>and</strong> sold him to awasherwoman “Heera” who influencedDr. Patsani’s early life. While his parentswantedDr. Patsani to be a doctor, Patsanideveloped a feeling towards writing,acting, <strong>and</strong> dancing to whichhis parents did not approve. Butsoon Dr. Patsani became rebelliousagainst the system, the systemwhich oppressed the majorityof its own people. Educated at BalugaonHigh School <strong>and</strong> GodavarishaMaha Vidyalaya, Dr. Patsani was presidentof the college union for three consecutiveterms <strong>and</strong> started fighting against corruptpractices, propagating social reform. In thecollege he was editing one magazine called“Bela.”“Commitment is the key to success.Something committed if abided with sincerity,<strong>and</strong> dedication bears results. A busyperson always finds time whereas a lazyperson struggles,” explain Dr. Prasanna Patsani,Always in a hurry, Dr.Patsani has visitedmore than 110 countries. He moves withcrimson robes <strong>and</strong> wields a “Blessed W<strong>and</strong>.”Dr. Patsani has published 60 books rangingfrom poetry to philosophy in Odia, Hindi,<strong>and</strong> English <strong>and</strong> has written around morethan 100 articles. He has been a visitingprofessor to many universities in India <strong>and</strong>abroad <strong>and</strong> has delivered talks in numerousuniversities <strong>and</strong> colleges worldwide on differentsubjects ranging from art <strong>and</strong> cultureto philosophy, history, language <strong>and</strong> spiritualism.Dr. Patsani asserts that he has been influencedgreatly by the beautiful lake Chilka,where more than four hundred differentkinds of birds come every winter. His earlylife until college was carefree <strong>and</strong> simple,<strong>and</strong> Dr. Patsani enjoyed it to the hilt. Butsoon life changed its course.During that time, eminent poets whopropagated revolutionary messages likeJwalamukhi, Nikhileswar, <strong>and</strong> Shesan<strong>and</strong>aRaju touched millions of hearts. Dr. Patsani’spoetry had nothing to do with Naxalism,he was writing out of poetic justicefor the millions suffering in India. But theGovernment of Odhisa misunderstood, <strong>and</strong>slapped him with 12 years of imprisonment,<strong>and</strong> thus his journey as a w<strong>and</strong>erer started.Beginning this difficult period in his life inthe Odisha West Bengal border, he reachedDelhi with the help of a poet from West Bengal<strong>and</strong> marched to Hardwar <strong>and</strong> Rishukeshon foot. There he met Maharashi MaheshYogi who taught him Patanjali Yoga <strong>and</strong> fora brief period he stayed in Kathm<strong>and</strong>u <strong>and</strong>then went to Switzerl<strong>and</strong>.After the warrant was lifted in 1975, hecame back to India <strong>and</strong> in 1978 joined politics.Since 1980 he has been winning electionafter election, serving people first as anMLA <strong>and</strong> then a minister in the Odisha cabinet,<strong>and</strong> now as a parliamentarian from theprestigious Bhubaneswar constituency.Dr. Patsani has traveled widely throughoutthe world <strong>and</strong> within India has traveledaround 2,70,000 km by road. Easilyaccessible to everybody, Dr. Patsani is theauthor of sixty books <strong>and</strong> has developed anew style in Odia poetry. He has been soinfluential that around ten scholars havedone Ph.D.s on his work from differentuniversities in <strong>and</strong> outside of India.With life’s myriad hues, Dr. Patsani’sromance with poetry is on <strong>and</strong> goingstronger as time passes.He likes to gorge himself on homecooked food <strong>and</strong> spend time with hisfamily. Dr. Patsani symbolizes an erawhere time st<strong>and</strong>s still. He explains themost difficult political situation with aneasy little smile <strong>and</strong> laugh. This is perhapshis biggest message to the new age politicianswho tread this difficult path of governingthe biggest the most difficult functioningdemocracy of the world.
