At least three western Iowa volleyball
teams — Sioux City Heelan,
IKM-Manning and Carroll
Kuemper — had legitimate
state-championship dreams this
season, although none came home
with the ultimate prize.
Regardless, there was an abundance
of talent throughout the area,
especially in Class 2-A, by far the
deepest of the four classes in western
Iowa.
Today, The World-Herald honors
the top individuals with the unveiling
of its All-Western Iowa teams.
The teams again have been broken
into three divisions: Class 4-A/3-A,
Class 2-A and Class 1-A, with two
teams of six selected in each division.

Heelan came up just short of its
third straight 3-A state title, falling
in a five-set semifinal thriller to
eventual champion Marion. But the
5-foot-10 Tritz, who spearheaded
the Crusaders’ run to the title in
2007, was again outstanding. She
led the Crusaders in kills (2.4 per
set) and digs (5.9 per set), and was
third in aces (70). She hit .254 from
the outside as Heelan again played
one of the state’s most challenging
schedules.

candidates for the captaincy,
but Kuemper’s Dentlinger
simply excelled in every area, leading
her team to its first state ap-

The Crusaders squandered
six match points in a remarkable
first-round loss to Springville, but
at 29-6, still completed a highly successful
year. The 5-9 Sheer was a
big reason for that success, leading
the team in kills (3.0) and kill efficiency
(.274), and ranking second in
digs (2.0).
Dentlinger marks her third year
as an All-Western Iowa player, repeating
on the 2-A first team after a
second-team appearance as a sophning
last year before that school entered
its first year of whole-grade
sharing with IKM, moving it into
2-A.
IKM-Manning senior Trista

first-team performer for Manning
in 1-A the past two years.

Sioux City Heelan and Lenox
took different routes, but both
football teams ended their seasons
with a midfield celebration
on championship weekend.
Heelan capped a wire-to-wire
run in Class 3-A by winning its
first title in 26 years. Lenox
wasn’t among the top 10 choices
by Eight-Man observers to win it
all when the 32-team substate
field was released. But the Tigers
shocked many by winning
their first state championship.
Both area championship teams
were well-represented today on
The World-Herald’s All-Western
Iowa teams. First and second
teams were chosen, along with
honorary offensive and defensive
captains in Class 4-A/3-A,
Class 2-A/1-A/A and Eight-Man.
Three of the six honorary captains
were repeat selections: offensive
captain Brandon Wegher
of Heelan in 4-A/3-A, defensive
captain Bryant Hummel of Clarinda
in 2-A/1-A/A and offensive
captain Alex Whigham of Stanton
in Eight-Man.
The others are defensive captain
D.J. Gnader of Council
Bluffs Lewis Central in 4-A/3-A,
offensive captain Jake Waters of
Council Bluffs St. Albert in 2-A/
1-A/A and defensive captain
Tyler Peterson of Lenox in
Eight-Man.
In Class 4-A/3-A, Heelan led
with eight All-WI selections, followed
by Harlan and Carroll with
seven each. In Class 2-A/1-A/A,
IKM-Manning and St. Albert led
with five performers, followed
by Missouri Valley with four.
In Eight-Man, state semifinalist
Stanton — the 2007 champion
— has seven players while Lenox
and Coon Rapids-Bayard were
next with five.
At 5-foot-11 and 205 pounds,
Wegher is on Iowa’s short list of
all-time great running backs. The
Iowa recruit has sprinter’s speed
in a powerful body that he has
worked hard to sculpt. Wegher
set a single-season Iowa rushing
record with 3,238 yards, and his
54 touchdowns rank third. For his
career, Wegher is third on Iowa’s
class rushing list with 6,823
yards, and second with 114 TDs.
At Lewis Central, Gnader is another
accomplished sprinter
packed into a 6-2, 215-pound linebacker’s
body. His 121 tackles
led the Titans, and he added 521
rushing yards and eight scores.
In Class 2-A/1-A/A, Waters, a
junior, already is drawing attention
from Division I schools. Possessing
nearly flawless mechanics,
the 6-2, 185-pounder put up
video-game-like numbers, completing
121 of 157 (77.1 percent)
for 1,974 yards and 21 touchdowns
with four interceptions.
He rushed for 572 yards and 13
scores.
At 6-1 and 215, Hummel was a
study in toughness. He played
the entire season with a broken
big toe and a broken thumb on his
left hand. He also suffered a broken
right hand in his last game
but continued to play. At linebacker,
he had 72 tackles, including
six sacks and seven for
losses. Hummel also passed for
584 yards and ran for 586.
In Eight-Man, opponents will
try to contain Stanton’s Whigham
for one more year. So far, they
haven’t been successful. This
season the 6-2, 185-pound junior
carried 154 times for 1,358 yards
(8.8 average) and 26 touchdowns,
and he caught 39 passes for 598
yards and 12 scores.
Whigham also averaged 21.9
yards on 23 punt returns and 33.3
yards on 13 kickoff returns. He
ranked second on the team with
44 solo tackles.
Few players in the state had a
more satisfying senior season
than Peterson. The 5-10,
155-pounder was one of three returning
starters but led the Tigers
to a state title.
Peterson carried 277 times for
1,822 yards (6.6 average) and 31
touchdowns, and he caught 24
passes for 360 yards and two
scores. He averaged 21.7 yards
on 16 punt returns with three
scores and 31.1 yards on nine
kickoff returns with two scores.
As a cornerback, his 44 solo tackles
ranked second on the team,
and he picked off seven passes.
Heelan’s Wegher and Stanton’s
Whigham became threetime
All-Western Iowa selections.
They were second-team
picks in 2006 and first-team honorees
last year.
Harlan’s Reid Murtaugh also is
a three-time All-WI choice. He
made the second team at running
back this year in 4-A/3-A after
making the first team as a junior
and the second unit as a sophomore.
