Changing seasonsChangingSeasonsAutumn… Is there a better timeof year to ride your bike?Versatility: that’s what you need from yourbike clothing now that cooler weather is here. You need kit that’ll keep you warm on breezymornings without overheating you if the suncomes out later on. Think about how you can team updifferent combos according to the temperature.Arm and leg warmers, lighter weight long-sleevejerseys, three-quarter length shorts… look for clothesthat’ll keep you riding comfortably in a wide range ofautumn conditions so you can get the maximum out ofthem. Remember, what works for you at this time of yearwill do an equally good job next spring when the weatherstarts to warm up again, and you’ll be prepared for coolsummer evenings too.You can never be sure when Britain’s winter is goingto kick in but the one thing you do know is that it’ll arrivesooner or later, so you need to be ready from late Octoberonwards. Choose carefully and you can use some of yourautumn kit right into winter too by adding an extra layeror two.Just make sure you don’t get caught without thejacket, longs and thick gloves you’ll need to stay warm inthe really cold weather – these are the winter essentialsyou can’t afford to be without.Autumn 2010 І 09

Of course, the Britishweather is changeable so you canget all that autumn has to offer overthe course of a ride. When it comesto choosing your cycling clothes, you need to be ready for prettymuch anything, a versatile, flexiblewardrobe is the key. That’s why arm, knee and legwarmers are so valuable at this timeof year, allowing you to get moreuse out of your summer shorts andjerseys as the weather cools. Putthem on at the start of the ride beforeyou’ve warmed up, take them off andstash them in a pocket once the heatstarts to build. They are three of thesimplest and best value cycle clothingitems you can buy; you’ll never knowhow you managed without them onthose in-between days!Your hands will probably be thefirst bit of you to notice the coolingweather so swap your summer mittsfor long fingered gloves. winterCLOtHinGNEiThEr WiNd, Nor rAiN, Nor coLd cANsToP you… if you’VE goT ThE righT kiTThere’s no reason to stopriding when winterarrives. Yes, it’s colder outthere but cycling’s everybit as exhilarating, practical and goodfor you in the chilly weather, just aslong as you have the right gear.Staying warm is a matter ofgetting your layers right. Start witha good, long-sleeved base layer nextto your skin. You need a technicalfabric that’ll wick sweat away quicklyto keep you dry and comfortable, and a heavier weight than you’duse in summer for extra warmth.Polyproplylene and polyester aregood choices because they don’tretain much moisture, but there’salso the merino wool option. Merinois soft, comfy and warm – even if itgets damp. and it doesn’t hold on tosmells the way man made fibres can.Next you’ll need a long sleevedjersey to provide more insulationand a jacket on top. The wind chill ishuge on a long, fast winter descentbut a good windproof will handle it,but this is Britain so it’s a cert you’llget rained on too. For most peoplethe best bet is a jacket that combineswind and rain protection, but there’snot much point in keeping the rainout if you lock heat and sweat in sogo for a breathable one. udget, but don’t forget to makesure you get a close fit to avoidflapping and decent ventilation so youdon’t steam up on the hills. You need maximum protectionfor your bottom half too. Tights – orlongs – come in a range of fabrics.Go for fleece-backed Roubaix forthe most warmth, if you’re likely tobe out in all weathers get some withwindproof/waterproof panels too.If you’re not into the skin-tight look, there are plenty of cycle-specifictrousers to choose from, includingcasual cuts that you can wear both onand off the bike.Don’t forget about your handsand feet – if they get cold, the restof your body will follow. There aresome amazing winter cycling glovesthese days that really will keep yourhands warm and dry no matter what, while winter cycling shoes offer extradefence against the elements. Failingthat, go for overshoes – they’ll keepyour feet warm and protect yourshoes at the same time, and they’renot expensive. Finally you need to sort your headout, you can lose a whole lot of heatup there if you don’t keep it covered.Keep the cold out with a headband orunderhelmet hat, a Buff is anothergood way to stay well covered.don’tforget aboutyour handsand feet.winterCLOtHinGwomen’sversionavailable(121368)women’sversionavailable(121370)endura Deluge winterGloves (EV137061)Low bulk waterproof glove with a gelpalm and a long neoprene cuff.Altura Shield women’swaterproof Gloves (121369)These great gloves feature a waterproofsoftshell offering the perfect balance ofwarmth and comfort.Altura night Visionwaterproof Gloves (121365)3 gloves in one! off-road antics (and no mtbs in sight!)Cyclocross racing has itsorigins in France at theturn of the 19th century, with road racers aiming toincrease their fitness over the winterby riding on rough tracks and acrossfields. What started as a trainingactivity soon became competitive, with early races being point-to-pointsacross whatever terrain happened tolie between the start and finish. While the first ‘cross racers usedthe same bikes they were racingon the road (since this was beforemetalled roads were common, therewasn’t that much difference betweenon road and off it), as cyclocrossevolved into a sport in its own rightso did the bikes. Today, ‘cross bikesstill resemble road bikes in profile, with 700C wheels and drop bars. Butthe frames have slightly more laidbackgeometry, some extra strength, clearance for wider tyres (thewidest tyre allowed in internationalcompetition is 33mm, but most bikeswill take at least a 35) and cantileverbrake bosses.Ironically the very specificdemands of cyclocross has producedbikes that are amazingly versatile.cyclocrosshas producedbikes that areamazinglyversatile. Most of the affordable ‘cross bikescome with a full complement ofbottle mounts and often mudguardand rack eyes too and make excellentmixed-terrain bikes as well as livelycommuters. These days too thereis a whole class of commuter bikesthat are essentially ‘cross bikes withslick tyres on… all they need is set ofslightly knobblier tyres and they’reready to jump off the tarmac.Today cyclocross has moved onfrom its point-to-point origins in theinterests of spectator appeal, withraces taking place over short off-roadcourses and lasting an hour. As you’dimagine, the pace is usually high, and what with the short, sharp hills, obstacles and the strong likelihoodof thick mud, you’ll definitely knowyou’ve been in a race by the end.Cross talk | cyclocrossJamesDuguidadvicegetting a whole new bike fora few months of racing mightseem a bit excessive but acyclocross bike makes a greatall-round commuter too. Just fita set of road-going 700c tyresfor your rides to work, thenwhen the race season comesback around you can switchover to the knobblies again.01How to:Perfect yourCyclocross skillsDismounting is essentially thetraditional “swing the right leg backover the saddle” technique onlyfaster. Well-drilled riders will stayclipped in with the left foot, swingingthe right leg through between theleft leg and the bike and unclippingas the right foot hits the groundrunning. You may wish to unclipbefore swinging off the bike, butwatch out for slipping off the pedal. It’s worth getting off the bike to theleft regardless of “handedness”, as ifyou’re going to shoulder the bike youwant the chainset on the outside – it’squite sharp.1 | JumpingIf you’re only jumping a barrier, pickthe bike up by the bars and top tube(or down tube if you’re short andneed to get the bike higher). To getback on, put the bike down while stillrunning and leap aboard. Aim to landwith your right thigh on the saddleand shuffle across – trying to landseated is likely to end in tears…2 | ShoulderingIf you’re facing a run up a bank, shoulder the bike on your rightshoulder (pick it up with the lefthand on the top tube) and steady it byreaching around with your right andholding the left-hand end of the bars.02Best of theBUNCHPinnacle Expede 0.0 ‘10 (129718)great entry level ‘X’ machine with analloy frame and carbon forks.£599.99 £799.99Genesis Croix De Fer ‘10 (129197)subtly-sprung reynolds 725 heat-treatedcr-mo frame, cr-mo forks and discbrakes. great for all terrains.£899.99 £999.99Specialized Tricross Sport ‘11(EV136444) a light, yet durable bike thatgives you the flexibility to race, commuteor tour. £999.99BMC Crossmachine CX02 ‘10(129008) scc frame design with bmccustom superlight tubing, bmc carbonfork and full shimano 105.£1099.99 £1499.99Autumn 2010 І 23

YesThe first thing you notice aboutthese glasses when you take themout of the box is they come witha great, sturdy case. It is perfectfor keeping your glasses safeand scratch free. They also havespace for some additional lensesif you have them. The glasses areextremely adjustable, everythingfrom the nose pieces to the earpieces. You can bend the arms inmost directions and they will holdtheir shape so you can shape themto your head and they will stick likeglue! I found this to be extremelycomfortable in contrast to otherglasses I have used in the past. The best part of these glasses arethe lenses, they really do make theseglasses stand out from the rest. They are photo-chromatic whichmeans that they adjust automaticallybased on how sunny it is, this makesthese glasses suitable for riding allyear round. t takes about 15-20seconds for the lenses to go fromclear to their darkest level, most ofEndura MT500 Spray ShortsWaterproof rear panel provides ample puddle and spray protection(121082) £124.99the time you don’t notice they havechanges until you take them off andrealise they are black! Yes, these areexpensive glasses but you definitelyget what you pay for, fantasticallycomfortable glasses that are suitablein all riding conditions! These are a great semi-water proof, trail riding short. They are madeof Cordura, similar to the EnduraMT500 Jacket, which is extremelyhard wearing and provides amof water resistance. Interestinglyenough only the back of the shortsare waterproof. This means that ifyou are riding through puddles andwet terrain you will not end up witha wet bum! Because the front ofthe shorts are made from a nonwaterproofmaterial they are highlybreathable so you won’t sweat likeyou would in 3/4 waterproof shortsor trousers. They are compatiblewith Endura’s Clickfast if you useany of their other liner shorts. Theyalso have decent sized pocketsand so useful front zip able ventsto allow more ventilation. Onlynegative so far is that the print onthe side of the shorts seems tofall off after a few washes, doesn’taffect the performance but thismight upset some people. YesMy dedication to writing this review, perhaps understandably, hasn’textended to deliberately throwingmyself on my head to see whetherit keeps me safe as it ought, but therigid carbon reinforced structureof the helmet gives me a higherdegree of confidence than a simplepolystyrene shell product might, and the snug fitting, easily adjustedcradle prevents any unwantedmovement on the head while riding. One of the typical drawbacksof putting anything on top of yourhead during exercise is the reductionin airflow leading to discomfortfrom overheating and perspiration.Specialized have clearly workedhard to try to overcome theseissues as the S-Works is to helmetswhat Swiss cheese is to, well, cheese. The numerous ventskeep your head really wellventilated and are largeenough to be able to addressthose long-ride itches. Theinternal padding is removableand washable , and two sets ofpads are provided to allow the userto arrange the internal cushioning tosuit them. The chin straps are madefrom thin, soft webbing, and like therear cradle, are easily adjusted forbest fit and comfort. The S-Works helmet is light andsuper-comfortable. In fact, whenproperly adjusted, it’s so unobtrusiveyou may well find you don’t evenremember to take it off at the caféstop! t comes with a protective(121545) £129.99bag to keep it in good condition intransit, and a removable plastic visorwhich attaches easily to the front lip.In terms of styling, the helmet isattractive but understated - whatstands out are the carbon revealsand the generous vents. Until theday that you find you have to relyon its primary function, you mightwell be the only person who doesn’tnotice you’re wearing it. Long may itremain that way!Altura Transformer JacketVersatile windproof shell with a neat party trick...(123299) £79.99In our changeable climate, decidingwhat to wear when you leavethe house can have far-reachingimplications for the comfort andquality of your ride. With the aptlynamed Transformer jacket, Alturahave come up with a technicalcycling top that transforms from longto short sleeved and vice versa, atthe pull of a zip.The transformer is a soft - shellshort / long sleeved jacket with afull length zip, three rear pocketsplus a zippered key / money pocket.Breathable and lightweight, it’s aversatile top that might just solvesome of your wardrobe quandaries. In long-sleeved mode, it’scomfortable and breathable, withwell - positioned reflective decalsrunning down the front and sideof the upper arms and elasticatedcuffs. The removable sleeves, whichare joined by a yoke across theshoulders, overlap sufficientlywith the fabric beneath thatno wind or moisture creepsin around the shoulderjoins. The neckline isalso high to prevent anyunwanted draughtssneaking in higher up.The shell stands upwell to showers, but in persistentrain you will need something morewaterproof, however it’s also quickto dry and doesn’t lose its windresistance if you do get caught outin the rain. With the sleeves removed, whichcan be done without removing thetop itself (although probably notwhile cycling ), the jacket retainsits windproof core but exposes theshort sleeves beneath, which aremade from a lightweight wickingfabric but not windproof. t’s a goodcompromise for a day when thelong sleeves might be too warm butyou still want some protection fromthe wind, meaning it can be wornagainst the skin.Despite being breathable, youmight find the jacket a bit too warmin the Summer, and in the Winteryou’re unlikely to want to removethe sleeves, but for the seasons inbetween, the Transformer jacket fitsa gap in the market, and might wellbecome one of your favourite bits ofclothing.www.evanscycles.com/reviewsAutumn 2010 І 25

ingon thenightRediscover yourfavourite trailsby riding themin the darkAs the days get shorter, it’s easy to feelthat your riding time is being limited. However, with modern bike lightsystems, there’s no reason to headhome as the sun drops. While high-end lightsare incredibly bright compared to just a fewyears ago, they’re still not as bright as daylight, making night riding (especially off road) a verydifferent experience. Familiar trails take ona whole new personality, while the sensationof speed is enhanced by not being able to seeanything that’s not directly in front of you. You’ll find that your riding skills improve too– not being able to see in as much detail meansyou’ll start to rely more on the feel of the bike. You’ll need good lights, of course, but also bearin mind that it’ll be cold at night so add extraclothing layers. It’s a good idea to ride in a group, too, and make sure you have a backup light incase your main one fails.26 І Autumn 2010www.evanscycles.com І 01293 574 900

LED emitters arecompact, powerful and efficient. They’re tricky to design lensesfor, but over recent years all themajor light manufacturers likeLupine, Niterider, Light & Motionand Exposure have got their headsaround it. There are still a few HID(high intensity discharge, alsoknown as metal halide) systemsaround, but these days LEDs canmatch HIDs for power as well asbeing more robust and smaller.Alongside bulb technology, batteries have come on apace too.Earlier systems used heavy NiCadbatteries that needed carefulcharging. Today, lighter NiMHbatteries are the least you canexpect, with high-end lights oftenusing Li-ion batteries as found inlaptops and phones. Li-ion batterieshave high capacity for their weightand size, making them very usefulfor bike lights. Suspension servicing<strong>TOP</strong> <strong>TIP</strong>plan aheadand get your shocksserviced well inadvance of your next‘epic ride’ so they’vegot plenty of time tobed back in.Suspension has transformedmountain biking, but itneeds a little effort to getthe most out of it. For astart, it needs to be properly set up.Most forks and rear shocks areair-sprung, so you can easily changethe spring rate for your weight andriding style. The manufacturer’srecommendations are a goodstarting point, but don’t be afraidto experiment. If you never useanywhere near full travel you canprobably afford to run it a littlesofter. It’s also important to getthe damping (the gubbins whichcontrols the speed of the shock’smovement), right. Most suspensionsystems have adjustable rebounddamping – if the fork or shock feelstoo bouncy, add a click of damping. Ifit feels sluggish, take a click off. Moresophisticated parts may also offeradjustable compression or platformdamping, but get the basics of springand rebound sorted before you startfiddling with those – it’s easy toconfuse yourself; change one settingat a time. All suspension componentsbenefit from regular cleaning andservicing, and up to a point thisis easy to do yourself. Most forkmanufacturers suggest lifting thewiper seals at the top of the slidersevery so often, cleaning underneath, lubing the foam rings that hide underthe wipers and putting everythingback. Changing lubrication oil inforks is also fairly straightforward– methods vary between forks, socheck the instructions. A l ttle moreinvolved, but still easily w thin therealms of DIY, is popping the airsleeve off a rear shock, cleaning it outand regreasing the seals.More in-depth servicing ofdamper internals tends to involvespecialist tools, obscure parts anda fair bit of expertise, so you maywish to let someone else do it. <strong>Evans</strong><strong>Cycles</strong>’ purpose-built suspensionworkshop in Kendal is fully equippedto deal with Fox, RockShox,Marzocchi, Manitou, Pace andCannondale suspension units. winterisingDon’t be put off by the weather, turnyour bike into the perfect winter bike. It’s a story we hear all to often: you buya bike at the start of the summer to takeadvantage of the good(!) weather. Then, when autumn arrives, the bike gets putin the garage to hibernate. It doesn’t have to bethis way! With a bit of preparation, virtuallyany bike can be set up for winter riding. Herewe focus on how to turn your knobbly-tyredmountain bike into a proper all-weathercommuting machine, but the advice can beused to prepare the majority of bike types forthe upcoming winter months.Racks & PanniersGet the load off your back and in to apannier over the winter months. with allthose extra clothing layers you could finda backpack is uncomfortable. waterproofpanniers are available (see p55) and manyrear racks have a solid centre sectionwhich doubles up as a mudguard.Winter tyresDitch the knobblies and fit a setof proper road-going tyres. theyoffer less rolling resistance and aresafer when cornering. winter roadtyres need to be durable. puncturesare both more likely and moreannoying to fix in the wet, cold, ordark, so heftier casings are a goodidea. a wider tyre will offer moreprotection from potholes lurking inpuddles or beneath fallen leaves.they will be heavier, but they’ll bemore comfortable and tougher too.36 І Autumn 2010www.evanscycles.com І 01293 574 900

mc at the douhow do the pros train over the winter? we hitcheda ride with bmc at their winter training campOnce the pro race seasonhas finished, you might beforgiven for thinking thatanyone who has racedfor 100 plus days and done 35,000kilometers in the last year might bedue some time off. In the life of a procyclist however, that isn’t the waythe cookie crumbles. In Early December, the behindthe scenes team at The BMC RacingTeam begin to amass a whole load ofequipment in order to be ready whenthe team arrives – en-masse – forits first training camp. In Januaryof 2010 this was in the US of A andwas where everyone in the team forthe upcoming season met for thefirst time. As well as getting a wholeheap of new Hincapie clothing andthrowing their leg over their newracing irons for the first time – therewas also the serious job of gettingthe miles in.These early training campsare about endurance miles for themajority of the team. Once the ridershave got over the kid at Christmasfeeling that happens every yearas they pick up their box-freshgoodies, they will assemble outsidethe hotel. Final tweaks from theteam mechanics, team cars loadedwith spare wheels and they are off.Perfect formation, two by two theteam will complete 4 to 6 hours: thetwo in front swapping off after tenminutes, no matter what the terrainthrows at them. Sometimes thegroup will be split in two – the earlyseason spring classics men doingextra or faster rides while those withtargets later in the year concentrateon their fitness base. The ‘throughand off’ format is core, similar – ifa lot more drilled – to any wintercycling club run.The team may ride every day forthe two weeks of the training camps, evenings and downtime are takenup with interviews, photo calls andplanning. And rest, plenty of rest. These ‘rest days’ can still consistof a gentle two hour spin along flatroads. If you’ve done an eight hourmarathon in the mountains the daybefore, spinning along actually helpsflush the toxins from the muscles. It could work for you too; even a 20minute spin helps.40 І Autumn 2010www.evanscycles.com І 01293 574 900

Bring the outside in | turbo trainersBring theOUTSide inrEcrEATE ThoSE wArm SummErrIdES In your lIVInG room!Aturbo trainer brings theoutdoors inside. It’s areally valuable tool if youwant a cycling fix but timeor the weather mean that gettinginto the big, wide world just isn’tan option. Set t up in the garage orkitchen, clamp your bike on boardand you’re ready to go – you canget a great workout in half an hourwithout leaving home. There are loads of different typesof turbo trainers but they all havea couple of things in common: theyhold your bike steady so you canpedal safely, and they come with aroller that presses against your reartyre to provide the resistance. Thatresistance can be supplied by air, oilor magnets. There are even electric-poweredturbo trainers, like the Tacx I-Magic,that are computer compatible. Thededicated software means youcan virtually ride video footageof famous Tour de France climbsor classic one-day races with theresistance automatically alteringto reflect the changes in gradient, and you can compete against otherpeople from all over the worldonline. Clever stuff… and a lotsimpler than organizing a trip tothe Alps. With a turbo trainer youdon’t need to worry about thetemperature, the terrain, orother road users, so you can justconcentrate on pedalling. This...it’s auseful wayof improvingyour pedalstroke...means they’re ideal for shortersessions where quality is important– interval workouts, for instance, where you alternate periods of hardriding with easy recovery. You canride at exactly the level you want tofor improving your fitness withoutgetting all togged up in winter kit, take it easy on the descents or wastetime dodging through the traffic.A turbo trainer is also usefulfor improving your technique. Wewouldn’t advise you to ride oneleggedon the road, for example, butit’s a useful way of improving yourpedal stroke when you’re on theturbo, encouraging you to move yourfeet in circles rather than straight upand down.Below is an example turbo sessionthat you can try once or twice a week. It’ll improve your muscles’ ability towork relatively hard for long periods– which is what cycling fitness is allabout…How to:Ride your firstturbo trainersession• Warm up thoroughly by riding for10mins, gradually increasing theintensity until it’s moderately difficult.• Then ride for 6mins at an intensityjust around the point where yourbreathing becomes laboured – you’reworking hard, but it’s not all out.• Recover for 2mins, keeping thepedals turning but just ticking over.• Repeat this work/recovery cycleuntil you’ve completed three intervals. In future you can gradually increasethe length of the intervals up to amaximum of 12mins, or add extraintervals up to a maximum of five.• Cool down by riding for 10mins,gradually lowering the intens ty untilyour pedalling becomes very easy.elite Mag Speed Alu‘Team Sky’ Trainerwith Starter PackMinoura V130Trainer (EV136733)Advanced magturboTechnology resistanceunit combines with alightweight u-shapedframe for quiet hometraining.£174.99 £174.99(EV136513)limited edition Team Skyhome trainer package withwater bottle, race cage andtravel block.£157.49£161.99Autumn 2010 І 43

shed look for something with a bit morepunch up front, or a multiple beam setting.Commuting on unlit roads means uppingyour candle power both front and back. Now you need your front light to see by anda bright one at the back for maximum rearvisibility. That takes us in to the realms ofreachargeables, a lot of the most powerfulof these are actually designed for off roadnight riding (see page 28). These lack the sidelens that dedicated commuter lights have toincrease your visibility to traffic pulling outof side roads – so add an auxiliary light thatdoes. In fact, wherever you ride always packsome back up lighting – mini LEDs are tiny andthese days put out easily enough light to keepyou visible.Don’t forget to add in some reflectives too– making sure you can be seen is the surestway of keeping safe, reflectives are often morevisible to drivers than your lights. storeLeeds CyclePoint opens it’sNeWsdoors to the regions bike &train commutersOne of our very first blogarticles we reported onRetail Director MarkSmith’s fact finding trip tothe Netherlands, where he exploredhow commuting by bike and traincan really work well together. Thebasic idea is that commuters shouldbe provided bike-friendly facilitiesnear big railway stations, so they caneither leave their bikes at the stationor rent a bike so they can explore thecity on two wheels. The system works brilliantly inthe Netherlands and now Abellio,Northern Rail’s Dutch owner havebrought the scheme to the UK – theLeeds CyclePoint is a trial, whichwill hopefully be followed by manyothers all across the country.<strong>Evans</strong> <strong>Cycles</strong> has won thecontract to operate the bike parkingand bike rental facilities, which isaccompanied by a small shop. AsJames, the store’s manager told us,stock is limited and can only coverbasic commuting emergencies. However, they are still able toaccommodate ship2store ordersso you can collect your order at aconvenient time. The neatly refurbished, roundshapedbuilding can accommodateup to 300 bikes and the workshopis properly equipped to deal withanything from a puncture to morecomplex repairs. You can leave your bike there for24 hours for just a £1. Monthly andannual tickets are also available, for £15 and £120, respectively.Customers with these tickets willbe issued with a swipe card whichwill allow them to retrieve theirbike outside of staffed hours (exceptbetween the hours of 00.00 and06.00).Renting a bike is pretty cool too.Right now, they offer a variety ofreally good quality hybrid bikesthat range from straightforwardurban commuters to more comfyDutch-style bikes. The charges startfrom £8 per day and all you need topresent is a passport/driving licenceand a valid credit or debit card (with£250 credit for pre-authorisation).Given the massive success of suchestablishments in the Netherlands,it was a no-brainer to give it a go inthe UK and as the pricing is veryreasonable we hope to see the idearolled out to other stations aroundthe country. So in case fate or your job takesyou to Leeds, be sure to give it ago – the CyclePoint is convenientlylocated right in front of Leedsrailway station.62 І Autumn 2010www.evanscycles.com І 01293 574 900
