Sixth Sunday of EasterThe housing market is often used as a leading indicator of economicrecovery because so much money is invested in this segment of theeconomy. Construction of new homes provides jobs, and the purchase ofexisting homes leads to additional consumer spending as homeownersmove in, repair, and renovate. Analysts use a baseline that they considera "normal" market, and then measure improvement from there. In thedark days of the housing collapse five years ago new construction startswere less than one-third the desired level of 1.5 million a month. Justthree years ago, mortgage delinquency and foreclosure rates werealmost triple what is considered an acceptable rate of 5.25%. These aredark and dismal figures if you are a banker or construction worker.In the Gospel this weekend Jesus is speaking to his disciples at theLast Supper describing the relationship between himself and the Fatherand the Holy Spirit. Those who love Jesus will keep his word and heand the Father will come and make their dwelling with the disciple. Thisimage of dwelling speaks to the abiding presence of God in thefollowers of Jesus. God is always with them.Owning a home was long considered a part of the American dream.If a family could purchase a place of their own, then they wouldconsider themselves to have "made it." Home ownership is still a valuemany people cling to, but its luster has dimmed since the collapse of thehousing market. We are six Sundays away from Easter now, and maybethe joy of that feast has also dimmed a bit in our hearts. Maybe we'veslipped back into some of our usual patterns and lost some of the fervorof our baptismal commitment. The Pastor’s PageWHAT A BEAUTIFUL GIFTThere are many times that I think about some of the giftsthat I have received through the years and the meaningthose gifts have had for me.I can remember my first gifts: toys!I could not get enough toys.Toys of every variety were demolished or lost almost asquickly as they came into our household. With a brotherwho was a year-and-a-half younger, we were alwaysfighting over each other’s toys. We actually began to getduplicate toys from our parents at Christmas so that wewould not try to take each others.You know where this is going, right?The moment a toy broke, it always was the other guy’s.Then, we moved into the clothes times.I began getting clothes, lots of clothes, through the year.The only thing I hated more than clothes were more clothes.It seemed to be a never-ending cycle.After the clothes era, we began to experience the moneyera. Instead of toys or clothes or other items, our giftbecame money. That way, we could use the money topurchase what we wanted.Funny how, no matter how much money we wouldreceive, we never felt we had enough to buy exactly whatwe wanted.Giving gifts can be such a chore. Receiving gifts can beas well, especially if we are always looking for more.There is, however, a gift that is always the right size, theright shape, the right denomination, the right everything.That gift is the gift of God Himself.Jesus gave us a most wonderful gift on the night He wasarrested.He gave us the gift of His very own Body and Blood.When we receive that gift, we take the Lord, Himself, intoour bodies. We are nourished by that sacred food. We arebrought into closer union with Him.The gift of the Eucharist — the Body, Blood, Soul andDivinity of Jesus Christ — is such a powerful gift that it actsto cleanse us and unify us.How special that some of our parishioners have receivedthis awesome gift for the very first time this weekend. OnSaturday, May 4th at a 10:00 a.m. Mass, students from ourparish school received their First Communion. In twoweeks, on Saturday, May 18th, at a 10:00 a.m. Mass,students from our religious education program will receivetheir First Communion.Please pray for our students who receive the EucharisticLord for their first time this month that they appreciate thisgreat and wonderful gift and come back to thealtar of the Lord regularly throughout their lives!THE MONTH OF MARYThe month of May is also the Monthof Mary. This is an opportunity for youto share your devotion for the Motherof Jesus Christ with your family.Take the time to pray together thismonth. Perhaps pray the rosarytogether.
