The <strong>Champion</strong> • Wednesday 9 January 2013Almost a million NorthWest residents arestruggling to pay theirrent and mortgage,according to ShelterReport by Natasha YoungJUST over one in five rent ormortgage payers in the North Westare battling to keep a roof over theirheads, according to “shocking” newfigures.A survey conducted by YouGov andthe homelessness charity Sheltershowed that the number of mortgageand rent payers across the region whoare struggling to keep up withpayments increased from 17% inDecember 2011 to 21% in December2012.The 21% figure is the equivalent of931,000 adults in the North Westalone, while nationally the figuresshowed a 44% rise in peoplestruggling to pay for their homesmeaning that there are now7.8million Brits in that position.Shelter is now urging people in thearea to seek advice straight away ifthey are being hit with financialdifficulties, rather than resorting toshort–term, high interest credit suchIn the region 21% of rent andmortgage payers are struggling tomake payments. However with the hugeinterest charges, things can quicklyspiral out of control, leaving peoplewith vast debts they simply can’t payback.“It’s vital that anyone who’s havingdifficulty paying their rent ormortgage gets advice now.
