30 • Visit us @ www.ChampNews.com SF The <strong>Champion</strong> • Wednesday 9 January 2013Holocaust memorial service to be held in boroughVICTIMS of the Holocaust will beremembered in Sefton later this month,when a public memorial ceremony is held inthe borough.This year’s ceremony will be attended bythe Mayor of Sefton, Councillor KevinCluskey, and takes place on Sunday,January 27, at Christ Church, Lord Street,Southport at 1.30pm.The annual service is organised by SeftonCouncil, with assistance from theAssociation of Jewish Ex Service Men andWomen, Sefton Equalities Partnership, KingGeorge V College Southport, Sefton CVS,Report byNatasha YoungUnison and Christ Church.It will be the 13th tribute paid in Sefton asthe ceremony is held on the nearest Sundayto Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD). Eachyear, Holocaust Memorial Day falls onJanuary 27 – the anniversary of theliberation of the Auschwitz–Birkenauconcentration camp in Poland.Councillors and council officers will alsoattend the memorial ceremony inSouthport, along with members of thepublic. All will take part in a minute’ssilence.Mayor of Sefton, Cllr Cluskey, said:“Holocaust Memorial Day is an annualevent which provides an opportunity tocommemorate victims, honour survivorsand to make a personal commitment tostand up to hatred.“It provides an opportunity for everyone tolearn lessons from the Holocaust, Nazipersecution and subsequent genocides andapply them to the present day to create asafer, better future.“At the annual Holocaust memorial servicewe share the memory of the millions whohave been murdered in the Holocaust andsubsequent genocides in Cambodia,Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur in order tochallenge hatred and persecution in the UKtoday.”The service is open to all members of thepublic, with refreshments served at the endof the service.natasha.young@champnews.comCHARLIE’S COACH HOUSEEXCLUSIVECARPET CO. A cooker wasdamaged by fire and the property wasdamaged by smoke.There was also a grill pan fire on TithebarnRoad in Southport just after 11.20am onBoxing Day. The grill pan was damaged by fireand the kitchen was damaged by smoke.On New Year’s Eve there was a kitchen fire onMelville Road in Litherland just after 4.30pm.A plastic spatula was damaged by fire and thekitchen was damaged by smoke.A fire also broke out at a house on RussellRoad in Southport just after 4.30pm on NewYear’s Eve. A frying pan was damaged by fireand the kitchen and its contents were damagedby smoke.Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service are nowoffering safety advice to help prevent kitchenfires.MF&RS Area Manager, Myles Platt, said:“Fires in the home most commonly start in thekitchen. We would urge people to take extracare when cooking.“People are advised not to leave food cookingunattended, to ensure cooking appliances areproperly switched off after use and not to cookwhile under the influence of alcohol.“A working smoke alarm can save lives.
