The <strong>Champion</strong> • Wednesday 9 January 2013SFVisit us @ www.ChampNews.com • 21Don’t leave mobiles chargingovernight, firefighters warnReport byDavid RavenFIREFIGHTERS have issued astark warning against peopleleaving their phones on chargeovernight after a battery chargercaused a house fire in Birkdale onNew Year’s Day.Merseyside Fire and RescueService were called to BirchStreet at 4.51am on Tuesday,January 1, to find the charger hadbeen left on overnight on thecarpeted floor.The home owner did not havesmoke alarms fitted at theproperty and the emergency firebrigade volunteers provided bythe British Red Cross aidedMerseyside firefighters who fittedtwo new smoke alarms at thescene.A male was treated byparamedics but refused hospitaltreatment.Watch manager at SouthportCommunity Fire Station DaveShanahan attended the call–out.He said: “The battery chargerhad been left on overnight on acarpet on the floor. We advisethat people do not leave electricalitems charging at night and theyhave working smoke alarms oneach level of their homes. Thisoccupier did not have smokealarms.“The Red Cross Fire andEmergency Support Servicevehicle was requested and alsoattended this incident and theirvolunteers provided help andassistance to the occupier.”The Merseyside Fire andEmergency Support Service(FESS) has a specially equippedPhotography project launchedHouse fire prompts pleavehicle which can be called on byemergency services during weeknights and weekends and bankholidays. It is provided byvolunteers with the British RedCross.A spokesperson for MerseysideFire and Rescue Service said:“The fire was extinguished by5.13am and firefightersventilated the property to clear itof smoke. One appliance fromSouthport Community FireStation and one from FormbyCommunity Fire Station attendedthe call–out.“Firefighters carried out a HomeFire Safety Check and fitted twosmoke alarms.“The male occupier was treatedby paramedics at the scene forsmoke inhalation but refusedhospital treatment.“There was smoke damage to thekitchen and one further room inthe property.”THE backers of a communityradio station for Southporthave started the New Year bylaunching a photographyproject to chronicle life in theresort.Project Luci, a team ofresidents who are working toset up a community radiostation for the town later thisyear, said that they are invitingkeen photographers tocontribute to their Luci 365photography project onimage–sharing website Flickr.Ian Strom, Project Lucispokesman, said: “We wouldlike everyone who lives, worksor visits our local area tocontribute to our Flickr groupwith a photograph thatrepresents our area in someway.
