Full I2Ccompliance permits use of I2C hardware peripheral controllers within microcontrollers tocommunicate with CryptoMemory, thus eliminating the need for software drivers and GeneralPurpose Input/Output (GPIO) pins. This leads to performance improvement by lowering CPUutilization and firmware footprint. #8562AUsing 2.7V– 3.6V CryptoMemory Devices in 5V DesignsThis application note describes how to adapt the 2.7V – 3.6V CryptoMemory devices to operate in 5Vapplications. The new generation of CryptoMemory devices, identifiable by the “CA” in their catalogbase name as in AT88SC0104CA, operates within the voltage range of 2.7V – 3.6V but are fullybackward compatible with older generation CryptoMemory devices that operate within the voltagerange of 2.7V – 5.5V.8592B–CRYPT–04/2009 5

Application HighlightsChemical Bottle Identification: CryptoRFAutomated lab analysis equipment includes a carrier thatcontains bottles of various reagents used to perform tests onblood/urine/etc., in the case of medical tests. When themachine extracts a measured amount of a particular reagent,it’s critical to ensure that the contents of the bottle areaccurately identified, perhaps with calibration information too.Attach a CryptoRF tag to the bottle (non metal); add theAT88RF1354 RFID reader chip to the system. Each time thereagent is used, the system authenticates the bottle, guaranteeing both the purity and the revenue stream for thesupplier.Battery Authentication: CryptoMemoryClone batteries may present safety issues (think PC fires a fewyears ago), have small capacity, and detract from the plannedrevenue stream of the OEM supplier. Typical solutions involve usingsecrets stored in battery microprocessor (easily hacked) or using SHA1-based authentication chips (can’t store confidential data).CryptoMemory uses a simple TWI to communicate with the host, plus cansecurely store current battery capacity, number of charges and other history.Secure, Convenient, Loyalty andSmall Payments: CryptoRFThere is an undeniable trend toward cashless paymentsystems as consumers look for fast and convenientways to conduct everyday transactions. CryptoRFpackaged in an RFID tag is a secure way to storeand manage small monetary exchanges forconvenient purchases or loyalty programs. Theflexibility of the RFID tag packaging allows for use inkey fobs or attached to convenient items such as cellphone or loyalty cards. Consumers can use theseeveryday items to make secure purchase transactions bypresenting the RFID tag that is attached or embedded in thedevice to a POS terminal containing the CryptoRF reader IC.Reducing Clinical Errors: CryptoRFCryptoRF can help reduce clinical errors. By someestimates one in 10 hospital patients experience apreventable clinical error that could cause injury or evendeath. Secure RFID can reduce these errors whenused, for example in controlled areas, wristbands thatcontain an RFID chip enable surgeons to identifypatients being taken to the operating room to make surethe right person is receiving the right treatment, whilenurses can read a patient’s ID before administeringmedication. Information such as name, gender, date ofbirth, admission date, insurance, allergies and otherpersonal medical information can be secured on thewristband IC with quick and easy read/write access.8592B–CRYPT–04/2009 6

Physical Access Control Use Case: CryptoRFOver the past several years, physical security has receivedincreased attention by both government and corporate agenciesalike. With this increased attention, the demand for physical accesscontrols has grown exponentially. It is important to control access torestricted areas where assets or secrets need to be protected.CryptoRF is the perfect secure solution for implementing accesscontrols. With CryptoRF form factors limited only by the imagination,CryptoRF provides a flexibility and convenience to physical accesscontrol systems that can’t be matched. CryptoRF can be delivered ina traditional card form, or FOB, or even embedded in a wrist band.Authorized individuals would be granted access to buildings orprotected rooms only after authenticating with a CryptoRF devicekept on their person. With the addition of the CryptoRF Reader ICalong with CryptoCompanion for host side security, Atmel has theadvantage of offering a complete low cost solution for physicalaccess controls.Embedded Software Clone PreventionWhenever there is a need to protect the microcontroller code stored in a FLASH chip within anyembedded system, one method is to insert many, many authentication checks throughout the code. This approach makes it difficult for hackers to reassemble the code without the authentication checks. Also, one can verify a signature in an optional code module, or the contents of a downloadable block.Performauthenticationmany timesWithout hardware protection, codestored in external FLASH can be read8592B–CRYPT–04/2009 7

It is less known for its capability to offer anticounterfeitingsolutions. While providing cryptographic authenticationschemes with data protection capabilities, a well-implemented RFIDsecurity solution provides complete product protection against illegalcloning, intellectual property theft, and denial-of-service attacks. The value of the seized counterfeit goods in 2007 is estimated to be over$600 billion, according to The International Chamber of Commerce(ICC)1. Goods that are most frequently counterfeited include computersoftware, DVDs, CDs, perfume, athletic shoes, drugs, fashionaccessories and money orders.
