Chairman of the Board
Dan England, along with United
States Senator Bob Bennett,
with distinguished alumni
awards Friday, May 8 at a luncheon
held in the Alta Club. The
awards luncheon was held in the
afternoon following convocation
ceremonies at the University
in the Huntsman Center where
both recipients were recognized
as well. The College gives the
award annually to individuals
who have made lasting contributions
to the College, the U, their
communities and their professions.
Dan was joined at the
luncheon by his wife Jan and
more than 20 members of his
extended family and friends. He
was introduced to the group by
his son Josh who shared stories
about his dad and growing up in
the England home.

Twice a year the Executive Committee
travels to Southern Utah
for Summit. Unlike the management
retreats that are often in
the news, this is a pretty conservative
affair.
The EC members stay in a midrange
hotel and the meetings are
held in our home. We shop at the
grocery store for food and enjoy
Pizza Factory pizza. Probably the
most extravagant part of Summit
is golf, something we enjoy
after our meetings. It’s obvious
by the scores we’re spending
plenty of time in the office and
not much time practicing putts!
But, it does allow us to develop
relationships that are important
at the highest levels of the company
and to get some sun and
fresh air. Noticed the sunburned
faces and arms of the EC? But
even with the golf, Summit is
three days of intense work by the
Executive Committee, both in
preparation and execution.
Considering the current economic
climate, I want to share
some of the topics we discussed
last month so you know of our
company leadership focus. The
meeting minutes alone take up
20 pages, so it would be impossible
for me to give great detail,
but here’s a list of a few agenda
items:
• Comparing C.R. England
with the competition and developing
strategies to remain an industry
leader
• Improving processes to
maximize revenues and reduce
expenses through cost containment
and effective budgeting
• Revitalization of our brand
towards becoming a global leader

While there are many challenges

with two significant
awards from our largest customer,
Walmart. This is the first
time that Walmart has honored a
transportation provider with two
awards in one year: 2008 Dedicated
Grocery Carrier of the Year
and 2008 Grocery Carrier of the
Year. This award acknowledges
C.R. England’s corporate commitment
to customer service,
operational excellence and the
ability to offer creative solutions
to Walmart’s transportation challenges.

We have all seen and felt the impact
of the recent downturn in the
U.S. economy. Times are tough for
many across the country and have
cut back spending in many areas.
During tough times, it is often necessary
to seek new opportunities as
new challenges present themselves.
In an effort to capitalize on new opportunities
and strong freight conditions
in the western United States,
the Western Regional Division has
grown by nearly 40% during the recent
months.

England Logistics (EL), has hit the
ground running by moving two power
transformers, weighing 700,000
pounds, from Tianjin, China to Conway,
New Hampshire. “The detailed

Summer is here and with it comes
high heat and tire problems. One
way to keep your tires in good shape
is to check tire pressures often.
Keeping truck and trailer tires at
the proper pressure will also help
you get better fuel mileage. Remember
the trailer tires are just
as important as the tractors. Use
a tire gage. Kicking and thumping
tires only tells us if they are
flat. Improper and accelerated tire

other fleets, cost containment efforts
have become paramount in
an effort to reduce expenses while
still offering exceptional service for
every customer. Each fleet in the
division has taken ownership and
contributes to the overall success by
working hard to improve fuel economy
and elevating service execution
while staying safe.

Regional fleets will continue to make
improvements to ensure we offer our
customers a competitive advantage

problems. Check tire pressures
only when they have cooled down
for about two hours. Checking tire
pressures before they cool down will
give an inaccurate reading. The tire
pressures that will give maximum
tire life are 100 lbs cold.
We are in the process of changing
the antifreeze in our fleet. We are
putting Extended Life antifreeze in
place of our standard Ethylene Glycol
with SCA additives. Both antifreeze
mixtures will protect your engine
but the extended life antifreeze will
the other pushing
the trailer.
Along with moving

is also able
to manage industrial
plant
r e l o c a t i o n s .
This typically
requires the
d i s a s s e m b l y,
re-location and reassembly of industrial
equipment. SPE was
not need the frequent testing that
our present mixture does. Please pay
attention to the labels indicating the
proper antifreeze to use. Using the
wrong antifreeze may cause engine
cooling system damage.
And finally, when you bring your
tractor, trailer and reefer into a C.R.
England yard, please communicate
your needs with the shop. Don’t assume
everything will be done without
your input. You are a vital part of
the maintenance process. Come in
the shop and let a service writer or
shop supervisor help you.

of an oil refinery from Bloomfield,
New Mexico to Chalmette, Louisiana.
In another joint effort with Dynalink,
SPE is completing a project
involving a directional drill rig and
all of its accessories, moving them
from Salt Lake City, UT to Callao,
Peru. This project will utilize both
the domestic and the international
capabilities of England Logistics.

The Most Harmful Myths About the Awards

awards, I can choose for the last few
status levels.
You must claim each award within
30 days of earning it. If you don’t
choose within this time, you keep
the points and status level, but you
forfeit the award. You do receive
reminder messages by Qualcomm
through those 30 days, but you need
to choose your awards as you go.
2. I’ve signed up for the Awards
Program. I’ll receive my awards and
gifts automatically.
C.R. England is your business
partner. You are the head of your
own business. There’s no way your
business partner can decide which
awards or gifts will best push your
business towards your goals. Your
effort and attention are needed.
3. I have to be a computer whiz to
use the Awards Program.
You do access the Awards Program
using the Internet. You don’t have
to be a “whiz.” Sign on at www.
crengland.com/etools, then select
“Awards Program” from the menu
on the left. The screen shows your
basic awards information. Instructions
are at the back of the England
Business Guide (the gold binder).
You can always ask anyone at Horizon
Truck Sales and Leasing or the
Independent Contractor Division.
4. I’m too busy to worry about the

HazMat endorsement?” It’s easier
than you think. You must complete
the HazMat written test at the State
Highway Patrol examination station
and receive your Hazardous Materials
Endorsement Application from
the Transportation Security Administration
(TSA). C.R. England provides
free training for this test at our
terminal in Salt Lake City and on our
web page at http://www.crengland.
com/drvsrv/index.jsp. The next step
is to have a TSA background check,
which determines if you are eligible
for a HazMat endorsement. Whether

They say death and taxes are the
only two sure things in life. So how
would your dependents get by if you
suddenly died?
Life insurance has long been a part
of sound financial planning. It’s essential
for parents of young children
to carry some life insurance. Insurance
proceeds can pay off your
debts, funeral expenses, and provide
future income for dependents.
After six months of employment,
England employees are eligible to
enroll in a $15,000 life insurance
benefit paid by the company, which
more than takes care of funeral expenses.
But how much more life insurance
no effect on your CDL endorsement
or license privileges and it only
revokes or denies the HazMat endorsement.
Both the test and background
check must be completed in
the state that you hold your CDL in.
As the largest refrigerated carrier in
North America, England is always
looking for opportunities to expand
growth and provide more freight
prospects for our drivers. Booking
more HazMat freight in our system
is a great way to do this. If you have
any questions about the process of
getting your HazMat endorsement,
please contact your DM.

savings/retirement accounts and
$10,000 of non-mortgage debts,

Life insurance costs are primarily
based on age and health. The best
time to purchase life insurance is
when you are healthy and young to
lock in the same low premium for
the next 20 years, 30 years, or for
life.

a pushy salesperson, you can select

open discussion of how to best use
this training to grow our company
and better serve our customers. Our

Increase Focus as
the Days Get Longer

It’s that time of year again…the
days are getting longer…the sun
is getting brighter. As summer approaches
we all get excited about
the warmth and the activities we
can participate in. Unfortunately,
it also means that there are a lot
more motorists on the roads and
our attention can be drawn away
more frequently.
Taking your eyes off the prize, if
only for a moment, can have drastic
consequences. We have had several
serious accidents the last few weeks
involving individuals who had just
these types of focus issues. So, in
light of our current situation, please
remember to increase your focus
and keep your eyes on the prize by
practicing these guidelines.
Following distances are 9 seconds
on dry roads, 13 seconds on wet
roads and 24 seconds for slick
roads. Congested traffic makes it
difficult to keep proper spacing
– so slow down and keep your attention
on the road ahead. Distractions
such as cell phones, texting,
map reading and even sandwich
making should be completed when
you are parked. If you feel drowsy...
stop driving. Fatigue is one of the
biggest killers on the road. If you
can’t stop yawning or are struggling
to focus, stop driving and get
some sleep. Don’t force yourself to
drive through your fatigue indicators.
Rollovers can be avoided by
following some very simple guidelines.
Speed on ramps should be a
maximum of 1/2 the posted speed
limit and curves should be taken
10 mph under the posted speed
limit. Wind can push a truck over,
so know the conditions and adjust
your speed accordingly. Avoid drifting
and coasting at all costs – maintain
your lane.

the opportunity to be interviewed
by Eric Harley with the Midnight
Trucking Radio Network.

Just in case it has escaped your
attention, this past January C.R.
England purchased the Wabash
Dealership from Warner Truck Center.
The dealership, Wabash of
Utah, services, provides parts for,
and sells trailers manufactured
by Wabash National. As an independent
dealership, they also sell
other makes and models of used
and new trailers including flat bed
and step deck trailers manufac-
tured by East and are seeking new
lines that will add to their ability to
serve the needs of their customers.

Michael Lind
has a medical director whose focus
is on helping drivers overcome
and prevent medical obstacles. As
a result, Erik was asked to be on
the show to talk about the medical
issues that affect drivers and how
they can overcome those issues.
The first item that came up was disc
disease and back problems. Some
of the suggestions offered were for
drivers to take every opportunity
they can to get out of the truck after
they get done driving, walk around
and exercise, as
well as watch eating
habits that
tend to compound
problems in the
back.
Next they talked
about common
muscle aches and
pains. Because a
driver has less op-

Michael Lind was born in Kansas, lived in Oklahoma
most of his life, and now resides and works
in Texas. He has been with C.R. England for 8
years now. He has four wonderful children that he
adores: Caleb, Dakota, Levi, and his one girl, Maggie.
In his free time, Michael loves to spend time
with his kids. He loves sports, fishing and being
outdoors. Michael says the key to his driving success
is being over-cautious. He says that he had
a wonderful trainer while going through our school
that got him in the right mindset. The one safety
tip that Michael would like to give other drivers is,
“Don’t get into a situation that could turn bad. If
you have any doubts, don’t do it.”

Erik also suggested that drivers
be aware of their medical history,
and to work closely with their
medical provider when preparing for
their next DOT physical.

A Heart of Gold

Craig Hewitt is the “Adopted Driver”
with a heart of gold! On Wednesday,
May 10th, he hosted two classes
(a 5th and a 6th grade class) from
Westbrook Elementary. He arrived
early at the school and escorted
them to the C.R. England yard.
Their tour began at the Fuel Island,
then moved to the Stratford Theatre
where the students had the awesome
opportunity to listen to Bill and
Gene England. They helped teach
the kids the importance of going to
and staying in school! They also
learned about pride in our country
and the opportunity to serve it.
ROUND TABLE
While in the theatre, they were able
to learn more about various aspects
of business and how school does apply!
They learned about Fuel, Logs,
Planning and Safety.
As is Craig’s tradition, he treated all
43 students and parents to pizza
and cake!
The day at England concluded with
a quick tour of the building and a
chance to sit in a truck and blow the

C.R. England’s Independent Contractor Department and Horizon Truck Sales and
Leasing have begun holding ceremonies for IC’s who are advancing significantly in
the Awards Program or purchasing their own trucks. Pictured here is Josef De Godoi
(right) who just completed a 6 month lease, his first, and through managing his home

horn! Craig made sure that each student received
a stuffed animal (he has been collecting them all
year!).
Thanks to all who helped make this a fun and memorable

and of course...Craig Hewitt!
One student from each of the classes was presented an
England jacket for being the most improved student
through the school year.
