Position Title<strong>Custodian</strong> III.Position DescriptionUnder supervision, to maintain assigned rooms, building or group of buildings, offices andservice facilities in a clean, orderly and secure manner; to assist in the maintenance ofgrounds surrounding assigned facilities; and to do related work as may be required.Positions in this class may be assigned to one or more schools or other <strong>District</strong> facilities toperform duties during a day or evening shift. Incumbents will formally report to a headcustodian for directions, assignment and coordination of duties.III.Example of Duties/ResponsibilitiesA. Following an assigned schedule, cleans classrooms, showers and locker rooms,restrooms, shops, cafeterias, gymnasiums, offices, hall and walk ways, and relatedfacilities-EB. Sweeps, scrubs, mops, strips, seals, waxes and polishes and washes classroom,office and other furniture and woodwork-EC. Washes windows, doors, walls and woodwork-ED. Cleans chalkboards, easels, trays and other classroom instructional equipment-EE. Polishes and cleans metal work, light fixtures and hardware-EF. Cleans restrooms, including doors, mirrors, sinks, walls, floors, toilets, hardware andfills dispensers and receptacles as needed-EG. Moves, arranges and sets up furniture and equipment in preparing classrooms,auditoriums or other activity areas for special events, activities or meetings-EH. Cleans and makes repairs to custodial and maintenance equipment assigned to theschool or facility-EI. Makes emergency repairs of a non-technical or limited skill nature to keep assignedarea operative, safe and clean-EJ. Adjusts shades, blinds, desks, chairs and other furniture-EK. Empties and cleans trash and garbage cans and replaces liners-EL. Sweeps walk ways, concrete and blacktop surfaces immediately adjacent to theschool buildings-EM. May order custodial suppliesN. Opens up or locks and secures doors, windows and buildings and sets or turns offalarms-EO. Participates in thorough cleaning of school plant and facilities during vacationperiods-EP. Checks and reports unsafe conditions of playground equipment and grounds-EQ. In emergency, cleans sink and toilet drains-ER. Polices for debris and trash on walkways, grass and plant bed areas, parking areas,etc.-ES. Maintains security of assigned school and other <strong>District</strong> properties-E(E) - Essential


IV.Minimum QualificationsKnowledge of:•Basic cleaning methods•Uses and application of cleaning materials•Chemicals and equipment•Basic work practices related to custodial workAbility to:•Learn and follow established cleaning methods, schedules and procedures•Use custodial equipment and supplies efficiently, properly and safely•Perform minor non-technical and limited skill repair work independently•Understand and carry out simple oral and written directions•Work cooperatively with those contacted in the course of work•Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance•Make simple arithmetic calculationEducation and Experience•High school diploma or equivalent required•Experience in performing general custodial dutiesLicense•Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver’s License may be required forsome positions in this class.Working ConditionsEnvironment•Inside/outside work environment•Subject to adverse weather conditions and noise from equipment operation•Traveling from site to site to conduct work•Exposure to fumes, dust and dirt•Subject to school campus student noisePhysical Abilities•Strength: Heavy work - lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling up to 100 pounds with frequentlifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds•Ability to see to read labels and operate equipment•Gripping/grasping tools, supplies and equipment•Climbing, twisting, bending at the waist•Stooping, kneeling•Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of specialized equipment and tools•Reaching overhead and horizontally•Standing and walking for extended periods of time•Walking over rough or uneven surfaces•Ability to use foot controlsHazards•Working with machinery having moving parts•Exposure to fumes, chemicals and dust•May be required to work alone at night•Ability to respond to emergency calls at night or on weekendsRevised: 10/01/pjhNegotiations: 11/14/01
