As far as I am concerned there are certain bulls with stud potential and others are already stud bulls. HART 10-116 is astud bull and ought to go to a stud breeder. He is an impressive bull and a favourite of one of the Hartebeestloop personnel. We are seldom wrong in matters of the bull business!LOT 5 : HART 09 - 234He is bred from AG 98-338 and GJN 06-006 from Gert and Gerhard Nel (GermarBonsmaras). She initially struggled – like all other cattle brought in from South Africa –to adapt to the Kalahari and her ICP between the 1st and 2nd calf was 439 days. Afterthat, her quality and top genetics kicked in big time and her ICP improved to 391, 327and 368 respectively. The key concept is “patience” when bringing in cattle from diverseenvironments into your herd. Her AFC is 27 months, ICP 381 days over 5 and herReproduction Index 114. She weans at 46,4% of her weight and had 100% studapproval for calves presented for selection. A strong bull calf of hers was sold to Rodger Coomber.HART 09-234 is one of those bulls that are in a league of its own. He is a medium frame “All-Rounder All-Purpose” bullthat can be used on cows as well as full-grown heifers. He is well adapted and presents some of the best adaptability traitsthat you can find. Right through – from hide to strong hooves – he is well adapted to work and perform anywhere and in anyenvironment. Take special note of his good hump development. He is robust, well-muscled and pure bull! He has a strong head with good eyebrow ridge development, nice darkening anda good scrotum that measured 36,9 cm at the end of the growth test and measured 38 cm before the auction. The scrotumis well formed and hangs symmetrically. He is constantly busy kicking up the red Kalahari sand as he scores and puffs.HART 09-234 is exactly what we want to breed for the meat industry. There is sufficient muscle development with hiseye muscle surface area measuring far above the breed average. You can clearly see the muscle definition of the tortoisemuscle and strong forearms. Good muscling equals good red meat yield. His breeding value for early fat deposition isoutstanding and although his is well-muscled, his condition on the veld is always good. Very often we find that goodmuscling and good condition on the veld works against each other. He shows a good height/length ratio of 1:20, strong topline, good depth through the forequarter and good capacity. The hind quarter is satisfactory with nice thighs, good rumpslope and length but his tail attachment could have been better. He weans at 270 kg, his ADG index is 115, Kleiber index is 110, Veld bull index is 119 and Pelvis index is 104 – you willnot easily find better results than these! He performs well no matter where or for what reasons he is being tested. His breeding values are excellent; he comes from a brilliant mother, performs outstandingly during performance testingand has some of the best adaptability traits. He is robust and masculine – he is a true stud bull!Stud Breeders should take a good look at HART 09-234 and take his tail attachment into consideration. He is definitely one of the best bulls on auction!LOT 6 : HART 09 - 92He is bred from AG 98-338 and NGO 99-104 Woestyn Bonsmaras). Over the years wehave had much success in mating certain South African bulls with the more respiratoryNamibian Bonsmara cows. The effect has almost been equal to the hybrid vigour that wefind with cross breeding. The lines from which the animals were bred differed much. Thecalves were exceptional and we re-bred that effect back into the herd. NGO 99-104’sAFC is 30 months, ICP is 410 days for 7 calves, Reproduction Index of 106, averagewean index of 102 and 100% stud approval of the calves on offer.HART 09-92 is an exceptional bull which we used much in the stud. His coat, condition, length and balance of the youngbull first caught my eye. Although his birth weight of 36 kg is not too high, I never used him on heifers. His growth potential, musculature and width are too strong for use on heifers. He is a model of adaptability with his outstanding hide and coat, long tail, good hump and strong legs and good claws. We moved him between the dune farm and the stone farm and hisclaws managed extremely well.He is a robust and masculine bull with his head held high and an alert attitude. The eyebrow-ridges are strong, darkeningis present and the scrotum is very well formed. Measuring 36,4 cm at growth test closure, it is now 40 cm prior to auction. The scrotum hangs perfectly. He worked hard at Hartebeestloop and his cover figures of the cows were outstanding. He hasmore than enough libido.HART 09-92 is a medium frame bull with very good build and meat traits. Despite his length the topline is strong with ameasured eye-muscle surface that is better than breed average. His overall musculature, capacity, depth through the forequarterand width are very striking. Don’t let the length of the bull deceive you and make you underestimate his middle5

section. Here you have to evaluate dimensions. We trust that his progeny will also have the perfect slope of rump and lengthwith the hindquarter full of meat. Long bulls tend to be lean over the loin areas – note that HART 09-92 ’s loins are full ofmeat. His breeding values are as good as they get. His performance test data are very good with a wean index of 103, ADG indexof 116, Kleiber index of 109 and Veld Bull index of 113. Good bulls are winners over the whole spectrum of testing!HART 09-92 is a stud bull and that’s a fact! Serious stud breeders should take a special interest in him.He is one of my choices for the auction!LOT 7 : HART 09 - 235He is bred from AG 98-338 and HART 06-0087. She is a BHE 02-74 daughter with AFC23 months, ICP of 392 days for 2 and Reproduction Index of 122. BHE 02-74 is the bullwith the highest heifer retention in the Hartebeestloop herd.HART 09-235 impressed me as young calf and continues to do so. He was amongthe top bulls during every evaluation process – from wean, pre-Phase-D selection,PHASE D closure, stud selection and evaluation of possible auction bulls. We all knowthat bulls change as they develop – HART 09-235 has remained consistently good!He is the very picture of adaptability to difficult, extensive conditions. Hide as smooth as butter, shiny coat, thick, looseand movable hide, good hump development, strikingly strong legs with very good claws. His secondary masculinity traitsare excellent. He is a robust bull with nice darkening, strong head with thick eyebrow-ridges and excellent scrotum in size, form and position. His pre-auction scrotal circumference is 48 cm. He is a brisk bull that will soon leave his mark on thecows.HART 09-235 has very good musculature, strong topline, good depth through the forequarter and very good capacity. He has width throughout with very good meat traits – his thighs are attached low down the hock area, thighs are full andthe hindquarter presents excellent. It is also worth looking at the long slope of rump. His breeding values are well balanced. He is low on birth direct (birth weight is only 32 kg), shows sufficient growthwith good average daily weight gain, excellent feed efficiency and outstanding reproduction breeding values with scrotumbreeding value at 31.3.HART 09-235 is a medium frame “All Rounder All Purpose” bull that can be used on cows and well-grown-out heifers. He is a bull with stud-potential in all respects. Stud breeders must put him under a magnifying glass – even among the338-son ranks he stands out! It is this type of animal that is in demand and sold at auctions.LOT 8 : HART 09 - 332He is bred from HJS 03-16 and VZF 04-037. She was bought at the National Auction and thisis proof of the advantage of unrelated genetics that ought to be introduced regularly. She is a2013 Stamboek Elite Silver cow with AFC 33 months, ICP of 371 days for 7 calves, ReproductionIndex of 110 and average wean index of 109 for 6 calves. You don’t buy or breed themany better.HART 09-332 has shown stud potential from an early age on. As young bull he was usedwith great success in the herd. He is extremely well adapted to the extensive conditions withgood hide and coat, thick (15 mm) and movable hide, splendid pigmentation, good hump and strong legs and claws. It is worth yourwhile to watch how easily this bull moves. He is a robust and masculine bull with strong eyebrow-ridges and excellent scrotum. Ithangs perfectly, is symmetrical, measuring 41 cm prior to auction. We gave him top marks for meat traits. He has length (height/length ratio 1:23), presents very good depth through the forequarter, excellent capacity with good width throughout. His strong topline is underlined by an eye-muscle surface that is better than breedaverage. He also presents good breeding value for early fat deposition and the rangers always point out that his condition is amongthe best. To reach good condition soon and to retain it is one of the most important breeding aims at Hartebeestloop. The hindquarteris excellent, as well as the inside and outside thighs and also the slope of hump that is full of meat.HART 09-332 presents some of the best breeding values you could wish for. Low at birth direct (his birth weight is 30 kg), his growthability, feed efficiency, body measurements and reproduction breeding values are top of the range. Look at his indices – wean (108),ADG (115), Kleiber (104), pelvis (112) and Veld Bull (108)! Full-fledged stud bulls perform on all levels – build, direct performancetest measurements, breeding values, economically important indicators such as pelvis measurement, veld bull test performance andthe mother’s performances. You are welcome to test HART 09-332 with a view to the above.HART 09-332 is a medium frame “All-Rounder-All-Purpose” bull which can be used on cows and heifers. He is a stud bull of statureand stud breeders ignore him at their peril. I strongly recommend him to any serious stud breeder.6

of 111. Wherever and in whatever way we have tested him, he has always performed in an outstanding manner. Full-fledgedstud bulls excel on every level of performance testing!HART 09-73 is a stud bull and serious breeders must have a good look at him. He ought to be a great asset irrespective ofwhere he is going. Put your money on the bull. You won’t regret it!LOT 11 : HART 10 - 45He is bred from AG 04-427 and HMB 06-041. She was purchased from HochfeldstreekBonsmaras and has adapted very well at Hartebeestloop. Her AFC is 30 months, ICPof 339 days for 5 calves and Reproduction Index of 116. AG 04-427 is being offered onauction as proven stud sire. We are using sons of his in the herd and he has done verywell for us. His bull calves and heifers are found all over Namibia.HART 10-45 is a medium frame “All-Rounder All-Purpose” bull which can be used onheifers and cows. He has excellent adaptability traits with very good hide and coat appearance, nice hump, long tail andstrong legs and hooves. He is well balanced with easy walking ability. This bull has good masculinity – nice darkening and very good scrotum. The scrotal circumference was 38,7 cm at the endof the growth test and measures now 40,5 cm prior to auction. It hangs symmetrically and the form is good.HART 10-45 is a good bull for weaner calf and ox production systems. The frame is large enough to be loaded with meat. There is good length, sufficient capacity, nice depth in the forequarter and a strong topline. The muscle development is goodand the eye-muscle surface area is larger than the breeding average value. The forearm muscles and tortoise muscle arewell developed. The slope and length of rump and meat in the rump area are very good. The hindquarter is well developedand the inner and outer thighs are filled with meat. He is consistently one of the heaviest bulls in the group due to his goodmeat traits. His breeding values are well balanced and he has particularly strong milk traits. His heifers ought to have very good milkand will wean heavy calves.Commercial farmers who market oxen and weaner calves should seriously consider this bull. He ought to bring goodweight to the weaner calves and especially the oxen. HART 10-45 will also excel in a well-planned crossbreeding program.LOT 12 : HART 09 - 296He is bred from AG 04-427 which is also on offer at the auction as a proven bull. Themother is HART 07-134 with AFC 26 months, ICP 406 days for 3 calves andReproduction Index of 114. We have done very well with AG 04-427 and are alreadyusing a son in the herd. His half-brother AG 04-175 was sold to Hendrik de Klerk ofGocharus Bonsmaras in 2012. Both are from the AG 99-104 bloodline of proven heiferbulls, which have performed very well at Hartebeestloop.HART 09-296 is certainly the most outstanding heifer bull that has been bred at Hartebeestloop for a long time!He is a dark red bull with a shiny hide and coat, excellent hump development, very strong legs that taper slightly towardsthe hocks and very good claws. His hide is thick (15 mm), loose and very movable - these are very important traits in theKalahari with its scorching heat, tampans and gadflies. HART 09-296’s masculinity is striking – look at the strong head, thickeyebrow-ridges, darkening and head/neck connection as well as the good scrotal circumference measuring 40.5 cm priorto auction.HART 09-296 is functionally and structurally very correct – from the strong topline to the slope of rump and tail setting, tothe neat underline. His meat traits are very good with a good hindquarter, very nicely developed thighs, sufficient capacityand ample depth in the forequarter – all this for a heifer bull. He has more than enough musculature with measuredeye-muscle surface area much better than breed average. His breeding values are well balanced for a heifer bull with both growth and height breeding values on the lower side. Heis a heifer’s first calf and although weaned at low weight, he subsequently grew very well and also did exceptionally well inthe Hartebeestloop Veld Bull test.HART 09-296 has stud potential written all over him. If you want to breed something special out of your heifers, givehim a chance! I expect much from the bull and will take a special interest in his progress and his progeny. Stud breederswould do well to write down his number.8

LOT 13 : HART 09 - 343He is bred from MMJ 03-164 and DNT 03-093. Her AFC is 39 months, ICP of 361 daysfor 7 calves, Reproduction Index of 107 and 100% stud approval of 5 calves presentedso far. She arrived at Hartebeestloop from the Danolt Bonsmara stud in Delmas andhas done well from the beginning. Some animals simply have a good ability to adapt toa new farm and environment. He is a slightly larger frame bull which should preferably only be used on cows. Hisadaptability traits are good – splendid hide and coat, loose and thick skin – observe the skin folds in the neck area, goodhump, long tail and strong legs with good hooves. Although the frame type is larger, the bull is very well balanced withoutstanding walking ability. Just watch him at the auction as he walks. He is robust, presents a strong head, is verymasculine, has wide and thick eyebrow-ridges and good darkening in the neck area. With those eyebrow-ridges he willfind it easy to graze under the black thorn scrub. His scrotum is very good – it hangs symmetrically with a goodcircumference of 36,6 cm at the end of the growth test. Now at pre-auction it measures 41 cm.HART 09-343’s meat traits are great and they are his strong point. There is good depth through the forequarter, finecapacity with good width throughout. He presents good length, a strong topline, very good rump and hindquarter and fullthighs. The muscle development is sufficient and the hocks are just broad enough for his type of frame. He is loaded withmeat, and if meat is your business – as it is ours – do not overlook this bull! He is going to be extremely suitable forweaner calf and ox production. Farmers who are well versed in crossbreeding will immediately realize his advantages ina crossbreeding program. His breeding values are also good except for the milk figures which I would have preferred to be better. He makes upfor that with relatively low birth direct, excellent growth ability, very good feed efficiency figures and good reproductionability. His pelvis index is 103 and his Veld Bull index is 106. Despite his larger frame his performance in the Veld Bull testis above average.HART 09-343 will do exceptionally well in any commercial herd where frame size, growth and weight are important. Heis loaded with meat and his calves will have exactly the same trait.LOT 14 : HART 10 - 136He is bred from MMJ 03-164 and BHE 04-129. She comes from the Fortress herd withAFC 31 months, ICP of 355 days for 6 calves, and Reproduction Index of 115. Hermother, BHE 00-0012, is still in the herd with ICP of 363 days for 11 calves, averagewean index of 102 for 10 calves and has already been certified as being in calf again. The Bonsmara breed is based on these fertile motherlines. The more successfulmotherlines you have, the more successful your breeding will be.HART 10-136 is a medium frame “All-Rounder All-Purpose” bull which can be used on cows and well-grown-out heifers. He presents excellent adaptability traits with splendid hide and coat, thick (16 mm) and movable skin (note the“abundance” of skin at the dewlap) for good heat regulation. You can chase him in the sun across the dunes – he won’tbe out of breath and dead tired by the time he gets to the kraal. The hump development is good, the tail almost touchesthe ground and the legs are broad across the hocks, they are strong and the hooves are good. He is a typically robust andmasculine Kalahari bull with good eyebrow-ridges, wide between the eyes, good darkening in the neck area and a goodscrotum. It measured 31,9 cm at the end of the growth test and is now 43 cm prior to auction.HART 10-136’s meat traits are good. He has a sturdy framework with sufficient length (height/length ratio of 1:22), whichis packed with meat. The topline is strong, the slope and length of rump are good and the tail setting is fine. He presentsa very good hindquarter, full thighs, sufficient muscle development, good width with enough depth and capacity. There isacceptable ruminant capacity without any wastage on the underline. He shows very good balance and his walking abilityacross rocky terrain is exceptional. He is a “rock bull” from Dassiesfontein (rock farm) and is a hardy bull that will adapteverywhere and retain constitution. His breeding values are good. He is light at birth (26 kg), his growth ability, feed efficiency, body measurements andreproduction ability breeding values are very good.HART 10-136 will definitely adapt anywhere without any problems. He will do very well in a weaner calf or ox productionsystem where growth and a sturdy framework are important for meat purposes. If you lack any of these traits in your stud, you can consider him with confidence. All of us do have smallish cows in the herd which are low on breedingvalues – consider him for corrective pairing with them.9

LOT 15 : HART 10 - 133He is bred from HART 06-58 and HART 07-88. Her AFC is 24 months, ICP of 380days for 2 calves, average wean index of 109 and Reproduction Index of 122.HART 06-58 is now at Charlottenberg Bonsmaras of Henning and Barbara du Toit.He did exceptionally well with us and there is a son we use in the herd. Heconstantly breeds well-meated animals with enough musculature and which retaincondition on the veld. He typifies what the farmers call the “nat bulle” - they presentearly fat deposition and are soon in the right condition on the veld. HART 06-58 breeds progeny that is early sexuallymature and early ready for slaughter. That is exactly the combination we want to breed at Hartebeestloop.HART 10-133 is a medium frame bull that presents early sexual maturity and early readiness for slaughter. He isan “All-Rounder All-Purpose” bull which can be used on cows and heifers. There is good adaptability with excellenthide and coat, thick (16 mm) and loose skin with many folds in the neck area, good hump development, a long tailand very good legs and hooves. His walking ability in rocky terrain is outstanding. This bull possesses a great deal ofmasculinity – his head is always up and his eyes alert. His scrotum hangs very well, is symmetrical and smooth. Hisscrotal circumference was 32,7 cm at the end of the growth test and is now 40 cm prior to auction. There is a lot of meat on the bull! The topline is strong, shows a very good rump (slope and length), broad hocksand full inner and outer thighs. There is good muscle development, very good capacity, good depth and width andnice length (height/length ratio is 1:22). His underline is clean with good sheath and navel flap combination. He isa Top Performer with wean index (107), ADG index (121), Kleiber index (137) and Veld Bull index (111). Wheneverhe was measured he came out tops. His breeding values are well balanced. He is one of the few bulls that combinegood growth with good muscle form (large eye-muscle surface) and above average fat deposition. These are the idealcombinations for an outstanding veld bovine.HART 10-133 is one of my favourites for the auction! As breeder I know how difficult it is to bring pedigrees, breeding values, own performances, meat traits and economically important traits into harmony with build, adaptability, masculinity, robustness and attitude as presented by HART 10-133. You cannot go wrong with this bulland you will advance in giant leaps in stud breeding if he transfers his traits to his progeny.Pay special attention to HART 10-133!LOT 16 : HART 09 - 209HART 09-209 is a bull you don’t just give a quick glance – you take a good look athim. He meets the breeding requirements perfectly where adaptability is important. His hide (15 mm thick) and coat are so smooth that he actually shines. He hasexcellent hump development, a long tail that almost touches the ground, stronglegs, broad and neat hocks and good claws. He has everything you look for in a bull– strong head, good eyebrow-ridges, broad jaw and good scrotum form, positionand size. Scrotal circumference prior to auction is 44,5 cm.There are few bulls with the meat traits he exhibits! That is how he was summed up by Namibian Meatco. HART09-209 presents a strong topline with an eye-muscle surface that is better than breed average. He is wide throughout, with good depth through the forequarter, very good capacity without any meat wastage, good hindquarter and full ofmeat in the loin and rump areas. His breeding values are excellent and he presents a very good height/length ratio of 1:22. His pelvis index is 100and Hartebeestloop Veld Bull index is 104. His performance test values are top of the range! He is a medium frame bull that I would only use on cows. His width and musculature across the shoulder pointscaution me against using him on heifers.HART 09-209 is a bull brimming with stud potential. If we breed them like that the other breeds we will have a hardtime keeping up! He definitely ought to go to a serious stud breeder where his genetics will be spread throughout thewhole herd and everyone will benefit from it.10

LOT 19 : HART 10 - 100He is bred from AG 04-175 and HART 07-059. She comes from a top mother line andher own performances are outstanding. Her AFC is 24 months, ICP of 347 days over4 calves, average wean index of 109 over 3 and Reproduction Index of 123. Her weanweight ratio is 52,1% for 3 calves – that is something to write home about! Time andagain I must stress the importance of top performing cows in every herd – stud orcommercial - and it is rewarding to see that self-bred HART cows are included.HART 10-100 is a slightly larger frame type than the standard we breed at Hartebeestloop but there should also bevariation as the market requests it. Namibian farmers are well represented in the ox production market and for thatpurpose frame and growth are important. Despite his slightly larger frame type HART 10-100 is a well-balanced bull thatis structurally and functionally correct. He presents very good adaptability traits – dark red colour with a shiny hide andcoat, good hump development as well as thick, loose and movable hide (note the thick skin folds at the neck) and stronglegs with good hooves. There are good masculinity traits in the bull with a masculine head, good eyebrow- ridges, sufficient width between theeyes and an excellent scrotum. His scrotal breeding value is 25,2, measuring 34,3 cm at the end of the growth test andnow 43 cm prior to auction. It is perfectly formed, hangs well and is 100% symmetrical.HART 10-100 presents good meat traits. His top line is strong with good eye-muscle development – the forearm andtortoise muscle show the good muscling of the bull. There is depth, capacity and good width with good hindquarters and arump that has plenty of meat. He also presents very good rumen capacity with a wide ribcage viewed from the rear. Thisis important for the amount of roughage intake and its proper digestion – very important traits in the dry areas of SouthernAfrica. His breeding values are excellent. Low on birth direct (birth weight 34 kg) and after that outstanding values all the way.His indices are top of the range – wean (108), ADG (105), Kleiber (102), pelvis (110) and Veld Bull test (102). That isexactly how a bull should develop and perform.HART 10-100 can be used on cows and grown-out heifers. His shoulder height is slightly high but the rest of hismeasurements and confirmation ought not to present any problems. This bull boasts lots of good traits and breeders mustnot overlook him. All of us have good cows that have breeding values and especially growth ability of poor quality –consider this bull to put things right. Any commercial breeder who feels he weans too low or slaughters too light – seekhim out. He is definitely your bull!LOT 20 : HART 09 - 298He is bred from the mainstay AG 98-338. He is now 15 years old and still has his 18cows with him at Hartebeestloop. The dam is AEJ 06-252. Her AFC is 21 months, ICPof 372 days for 5 calves with Reproduction Index of 122. She pairs well with AG 98-338and her last inter calving period with him is 330 days. There is nothing wrong with hislibido and breeding dexterity. We are trying our best to establish this type of longevityin our herd.HART 09-298 is a medium frame “All-Rounder-All-Purpose” bull which can be used on cows and heifers. His adaptabilitytraits are some of the best on the market – what really makes a difference he has in abundance. His hide and coat, humpdevelopment, tail length, clean underline, strong legs, strong claws, balance and good walking ability makes him a bull thatperforms extremely well in extensive conditions. If you talk about constitution you have this bull in mind. His secondary masculinity traits are also very good – strong and masculine head with a fine expression and attitude, good eyebrow-ridges, thick bull’s neck with good darkening and well-formed scrotum. His scrotal circumference measured37 cm at the end of the growth test and is now 41 cm prior to auction. The position, symmetry and form are also very neat.HART 09-298 has a good height/length ratio of 1:21, is well muscled with outstanding topline and large eye-musclesurfaces. As with his father, his tail setting could have been better. This bull has good depth through the forequarter, sufficientcapacity and good width. He is well packed with meat and presents good hindquarters with quality inside and outsidethighs. This is a hardy, no frills bull which can easily be taken to any area. We see them over and over again acrossthe entire Namibia. His Veld Bull index of 104 shows that he does well on the veld with what natural grazing has to offer. His breeding values are excellent – low on birth direct (birth weight is 30 kg), very good pre-wean and post-wean growthability with outstanding feed efficiency, body measurements and reproduction capacity. His pelvis index of 108 shows thathe ought to breed “big-enough” pelvises as well. It is difficult to criticize HART 09-298 on the basis of his performances.HART 09-298 is a strong AG 98-338 son which makes a very favourable impression. If you farm under harsh conditionswith only veld grazing and minimal lick, huge distances across difficult terrain to the water trough without rangersupervision – then this is your bull! Hardiness and adaptability are definitely his strong points.12

LOT 21 : HART 10 - 143He is bred from HJS 03-16 and HART 06-007. Her AFC is 29 months, ICP of 360 daysfor 4 calves, Reproduction Index of 114, average wean index of 102 for 4 and 100%stud approval of all her calves. The Bonsmara Cattle Breeders’ Association of Namibiais so successful in marketing the breed as motherline and even the buyers of bulls onthe farm insist on inspecting the bull mother’s performances. It is mandatory in Namibiato conduct DNA paternity identification of even farm bulls. The buyer knows exactlywhat he is getting – whether at the auction or on the farm.HJS 03-16 consistently breeds medium frame animals with good length, meat, build and breeding values. HART 10-143is a medium frame “All-Rounder All-Purpose” bull which can be used on cows and heifers. He grew up on Dassiesfonteinin a rocky environment and presents very good adaptability. His hide and coat are exemplary, skin is 18 cm thick and veryloose, sufficient dewlap, good hump, long tail and strong legs with good hooves. His face has good pigmentation. His masculinity is a strong point. His head is masculine, has good eyebrow-ridges, good width between the eyes, nicedarkening in the forequarter with a very good scrotum. The scrotal circumference was 32,4 cm at the end of the growthtest but is now 38 cm prior to auction. The form, position and symmetry are great.HART 10-143 presents good meat traits. His breeding value for early fat deposition is high and this is due to his goodcondition on the veld. For years Hartebeestloop has been conducting strict selection for rounding-off on the veld andgood condition on the veld. That trait is now well established in our genetics. He presents good capacity, sufficient depthand muscle composition, good width and an outstanding height/length ratio of 1:28. Good length in animals is a breedingpriority at Hartebeestloop and the good ratios of the bulls in general are well worth mentioning. They are firmly establishedin our herd. The breeding values are very good. His birth weight is 33 kg, he weans with an index of 102 at 273 kg, grows859 g/day during the 270 days’ extensive growth test, with a pelvis index of 108 and a Veld Bull index of 102 – how muchbetter can he get? He is a top performer!HART 10-143 has a small patch of white directly in front of the sheath. This will bother stud breeders but has noeconomic impact for the commercial farmer. He is a strong, hardy and well adapted bull which will do very well in acommercial herd.LOT 22 : HART 10 - 55He is bred from AG 04-175 that was sold to Hendrik de Klerk of Gocharus Bonsmarasin 2012. AG 04-175 progeny at Hartebeestloop was excellent – he was used on youngheifers until he became too heavy. HART 10-055 is bred from a heifer. HART 07-177’sAFC is 26 months, ICP of 345 days for 3 calves with Reproduction Index of 121 andaverage wean index of 99 over 3 calves. Her wean weight ratio is 46,5%. These areoutstanding figures for a young heifer under extensive conditions in a marginal cattlefarmerarea.HART 10-055 is a typical Hartebeestloop medium frame “All-Rounder All-Purpose” bull. He presents excellent adaptabilitytraits – just like his father – with a smooth and shiny coat. His hump development is very good, his tail is long, legs arestrong and hooves are very good. You don’t need more than that to perform well in the Kalahari. Look at his performancetest data – wean index 99, ADG index 109, Kleiber index 108 and Veld Bull test index 107. His pelvis index of 111 is oneof the biggest on the auction and his heifer progeny ought to have large pelvises for easy calving. He has performed wellwhen tested on numerous criteria and areas.I bought his father specifically to improve scrotums further in the Hartebeestloop herd. HART 10-055 has an excellentscrotum with 42 cm circumference prior to auction. It is symmetrical, smooth and hangs perfectly. His build is actually hisstriking feature. He shows good length (length/height ratio 1:23), good muscling, depth as well as right width and capacity. He is packed with meat and is, as the senior farmers say, “well-filled out”. His breeding values are outstanding with goodgrowth capacity, excellent feed efficiency and very good reproduction breeding values. He excels at maintaining hiscondition and ought to do well in any area.HART 10-055 is one of the top bulls at the auction! He is stud quality and will introduce splendid builds, scrotums andadaptability into your herd. Do not overlook this bull. Other bulls may have more flair, but won’t have better economicallyimportant traits! He ought to go to an Elite stud breeder.13

LOT 23 : HART 09 - 319He is bred from AEJ 05-112 and HOT 03-203. I bought her at the 50th anniversaryof Badeveen Bonsmaras. She is a 2013 Stamboek Elite Bronze cow with AFC 32months, ICP of 412 days for 7 valves, Reproduction Index of 104 and average weanindex of 101 for 5. AEJ 05-112 is also on auction as proven bull. I bought him inpartnership with Badeveen Bonsmaras.HART 09-319 is a slightly larger frame bull that must only be used on cows. Heis heavier than breeding average at birth (birth weight is 39 kg), presents strong muscles and tremendous growthability – those are all reasons why he cannot be used on heifers. He shows outstanding adaptability – shiny hide andcoat, good hump, long tail, strong legs and hooves and good underline. Underlines are important in the Kalahari –duinsteekriet (Dune Bushman Grass) on the dunes it true to its name – it pricks and irritates long navel flaps andsheaths. The bull presents good masculinity with a masculine head, good eyebrow-ridges, nice darkening and an outstandingscrotum. It measured 39,9 cm at the end of the growth test and measures now 44 cm prior to auction. It issymmetrical, smooth and hangs perfectly. This bull knows how to handle cows. This bull is packed with meat! He is long (height/length ratio 1:21), has a strong topline, good muscle development, sufficient capacity and good depth through the forequarter. Inner and outer thighs, hindquarter, rump and loinare full of meat. He does extremely well in the growth test and obtains an ADG index of 127 and Kleiber index of 112.His Veld Bull index is an excellent 115 which shows that he is adapted, grows on the veld and retains condition.HART 09-319’s breeding values are excellent. There is outstanding growth ability with first-class feed efficiencyand reproduction ability breeding values.Focus your attention on HART 09-319 if you want to promote growth in the herd. For the farmers whose cow herdsare somewhat on the small side and wean very light or, for the farmers who may have many Sanga types in the cowherd and want to wean heavier – he is a bull that deserves strong consideration. Of course he will bring about a newdimension in any crossbreeding program.LOT 24 : HART 10 - 91Another great son of WAT 04-339. The dam is from the NOSA Bonsmara stud ofJan Pienaar AEJ 04-192. Her AFC is 31 months, ICP of 354 days over 7 calves,Reproduction Index of 115 and 100% approval of calves on offer. I sold a very goodbull of her to Suiderland Stoetery in 2012. She produces a saleable calf every yearand is part of the Elite group of cows on the farm. Actually no stud breeder canmanage without this type of cow.HART 10-091 is very typical of the bulls bred by WAT 04-339 – medium frame, early matured and packed with meat.He presents very good adaptability traits and that is obvious from his performances on the veld – he weans at a 91index at 248 kg and after that his growth is 846 g/day during the extensive growth test (270 days) to end with ADGindex of 101 and Kleiber index of 102. His Hartebeestloop Veld Bull index is 113 and he is one of the bestperformers during the veld test. His condition on the veld is excellent and he is one of the bulls that cost very littlemoney to round off for the auction. What the natural veld offers is sufficient for him.He is a very good example of masculinity, typical head-up bull with good scrotal circumference of 39,5 cm prior toauction. HART 10-091 is functionally and structurally very correct and he is a bull that can be used safely. There isreally nothing negative you could introduce into your herd with this bull.I like the capacity and width of the bull together with his outstanding height/length ratio of 1:23. His eye-muscle areais far better than breed average as is his early fat deposition breeding value. Remember – his female progeny oughtto have the same traits to reach condition fast to be bred under normal circumstances. HART 10-091 is well balancedand ought to catch the eye of many potential buyers.HART 10-091’s breeding values are well balanced with good growth ability, favourable feed efficiency and strongreproduction breeding values. He is an “All-Rounder All-Purpose” bull that can safely and successfully be used oncows and heifers. There is an abundance of meat on the bull and he also presents good growth.HART 10-091 would be a great asset to any stud or commercial herd. Stud breeders should give him seriousconsideration to open heifers and to establish confirmation with good breeding values.14

LOT 25 : HART 10 - 10Again a very good bull bred from HJS 03-16. The dam is EFC 03-276 from Ecki andHeiko Freyer’s Hoanob Bonsmara stud. Her AFC is 34 months, ICP of 362 days for 8calves, Reproduction Index of 112 and 100% approval of calves on offer. The Namibianfarmer puts a great premium on adapted cows that perform well under extensiveconditions with only strategic lick supplement. The bull mother’s performances play arole in their decision on purchases.HART 10-010 is a medium frame bull with excellent adaptability traits. The hide and coat quality is very good – thesun brings out the shine. There is good hump development, long tail, strong legs and claws and a clean underline. He presents good eyebrow-ridges and in scrubland he will be good at grazing under scrubs. It is becoming a moreimportant trait as the encroachment of scrub vegetation is increasing in Namibia. He is a typical Hartebeestloop robustand masculine bull with attitude, strong head, splendid darkening and very good scrotum; the scrotal circumferencemeasuring 39 cm prior to auction. His meat traits impressed us and the consultants! Remember that Hartebeestloop always includes a “meat specialist”in the selection. We have to select good meat straight from the veld. He has very good capacity, good depththrough the forequarter, strong musculature, very nice width throughout and good hindquarters. Just look at the slope ofthe rump, length and meat – this is as close as you can get to the ideal. He also presents the “sjambok” lashes on thehindquarter being indicative of good meat traits. He also has a very good height/length ratio of 1:21. This bull is packedwith meat!HART 10-010’s breeding values are superb. He has very good growth, effectively converts grass to meat and hisbreeding values for reproduction are good. His performance test data are top of the range – ADG (115), Kleiber (109),pelvis (103) and Veld Bull test (112). His performance is one of the best throughout.HART 10-010 may only be used on cows. His width, especially across the points of shoulder, underline and outsidethighs, are the reason why he may not be used on heifers. He is a bull with stud potential which will introduce very goodtraits into any stud. Testicles, good growth, build, large pelvises and performance and condition on the veld – these arehis strong points. If you need any of this – keep HART 10-010 in mind!LOT 26 : HART 09 - 251I have already mentioned on many occasions that WAT 04-339 has brought very goodmeat traits into the Hartebeestloop herd. HART 09-251 is bred from WAT 04-339 andBHE 01-101. She is a 2012 Elite Cow with AFC 31 months, ICP of 373 days for 9 calvesand Reproduction Index of 112. Her wean ratio is 45,9% and average wean index is 100for 7 calves. Of the 9 calves, 7 are bulls and only 1 calf did not get stud approval. If youare a bull breeder then these figures are a dream. It is an established fact that goodbulls come from good mothers! But you must have lots of mothers of this caliber to breed enough good bulls. We sold anoutstanding bull of her, HART 06-74, to EMOK Bonsmara of Edward Hansen. He is doing exceptionally well and some ofhis sons are at the Hartebeestloop auction under EMOK Bonsmaras.HART 09-251 is a medium frame “All-Rounder-All-Purpose” bull that can be used on cows and heifers. He is a typical,well-adapted Hartebeestloop bull that thrives under extensive conditions. We would find it hard to improve on hisadaptability traits – he presents good condition throughout the year and is always one of the first to show improved conditionwhen the rains start. Genetics determines early sexual maturity and also early readiness for slaughter – that is HART09-251. In the dunes strong legs are indispensable – have a good look at the neat and broad hocks and legs slightlynarrowing downwards. That is exactly how it should be for our area.He is masculine with good width between the eyebrow-ridges, strong jaw, nice darkening and excellent scrotum – in form, symmetry, position and size. Scrotal circumference before auction is 38 cm.HART 09-251 is certainly one of the best bulls in height/length ratio in the breed – 1:35. Farmers know that extralength is extra meat, extra weight, and extra money. He presents large eye muscles that extend right through to the rump, strong topline despite the tremendous length, outstanding capacity, much depth, good width throughout and hindquartersfull of meat. He has good musculature, but it is not so excessive that he can’t be used on heifers. His birth weight is 36 kg,he weans at 278 kg with wean index of 102 and obtains an ADG index of 104 during the post-wean growth test. His VeldBull index of 104 also shows his good performance on the veld. His breeding values present very good growth traits bothpre- and post-wean, good feed efficiency and very strong reproduction capacity.HART 09-251 is tops in stud potential and stud breeders would do well to take a special interest in him. He is one of thebulls that performed very well in every section of the performance testing he was subjected to. This type of performanceand genetics are exactly what all of us want to establish in our herds! I recommend him as a potential stud bull.15

LOT 27 : HART 10 - 167He is bred from AG 03-29 and BHE 05-66. Her AFC is 26 months, ICP of 399 days for 6calves with Reproduction Index of 111 and average wean index of 103 for 5 calves. Herwean weight ratio is 49,1% and she has 75% stud approval of her calves. Here againyou have a cow that has adapted extremely well from the cold Eastern Free State tothe blistering hot Kalahari!HART 10-167 is a medium frame bull with very good adaptability. Note everythingthat pertains to adaptability and the quality he displays – hide, coat, hump, tail, loose and thick (16 mm) skin, legs, hoovesand general structural correctness. The angle and fleshiness of the sheath are the only points on the bull that deservecriticism. He is going to adapt to any area. Frame type is becoming more and more important in Namibia. After years ofgood rainfall everybody tended towards larger frame types. But the lower rainfall forecast for 2013 creates another picture! The larger frame, later-mature animals struggle to gain condition on the poor veld, which will negatively affect the numberof cows in calf, and this is going to be a considerable problem in Namibia this year.He presents good masculinity with a strong head and good eyebrow-ridges. He is a lively bull and is always busy corneringother bulls into a rough-and-tumble. His scrotum is well formed and measured 33,3 cm at the end of the growth test. His pre-auction scrotal circumference measurement is 38 cm.HART 10-167 presents sufficient capacity, enough depth, is a thick bull with good length (height/length ratio of 1:23) andgood muscle development. Have a good look at the broad eye muscle, well developed tortoise muscle and the forearmmuscles. The rump’s slope, length and meat traits are first-rate, as is the quantity of meat on the outer and inner thighs. These thick, medium frame bulls with sufficient muscle development are very popular with both the weaner calf and oxproducers. This type of bull is often used to breed down larger-frame crossbred cows and load the progeny with meat.HART 10-167’s sheath angle and fleshiness will disqualify him in the eyes of the stud breeder. Commercial farmers, whoonly focus on economically important traits, would do well to take a serious look at him.He brings a lot of other good traits to the table!LOT 28 : HART 09 - 231He is bred from AG 03-29 and BHE 05-101. I think that everyone who has bought atthe Fortress sale agrees that the BHE cows are exceptional. BHE 05-101’s AFC is 30months with ICP of 363 days for 6 calves and Reproduction Index of 114. She has100% stud approval of her calves on offer. A strong bull of hers, HART 07-166, wassold to Bernard and Kathrin Vente of Vente Farming Enterprises and another one toour neighbour Holger Wittsack. She breeds consistently well and her calves fare verywell at auctions. You are welcome to also have a look at the other AG 03-29 sons at the auction. The general standard of his calves isvery high.HART 09-231 is an impressive bull that catches your eye immediately! He presents excellent depth, capacity, width andgood length. He is put together exceptionally well and is brimming with meat. His musculature is good with eye-musclesurface better than breed average. Both the inside and outside thighs are full of meat and are attached low in the twistarea. I like his strong legs which are relatively wide over the hocks. Cattle must have such legs to cope with sand dunesday in and day out.HART 09-231 presents a very strong topline with good hump development. He is very masculine with a strong head, good eyebrow-ridges, wide jaw and nice pigmentation on the muzzle. Although his scrotum breeding value is negative, measuring 35,1 cm at the end of the growth test, now prior to the auction, the scrotal circumference is 40 cm; one of thoseinexplicable things in stud breeding! He is an early-mature medium frame bull that will maintain his constitution everywhere. He remains in top condition yearafter year. He is on exactly the same ration as all the other bulls in the group but his condition was the first to be rightand it stays right. Isn’t this one of the most important traits we want to see in beef cattle?HART 09-231’s looks belie his breeding values. Although his breeding values are low this is not apparent and I see alot more in this bull.HART 09-231’s tail setting as well as navel/sheath combination could have been better. Although his breeding valuesindicate that he could be used on heifers, I would not recommend this. His width in the underline, good musculature, widthacross the shoulder points and width throughout are the reasons why he should not be used on heifers.Everyone has given him high scores despite the rough tail setting and fleshy navel/sheath combination. If meat is your business, this is definitely the bull you have been waiting for!16

LOT 29 : HART 10 - 123He is bred from WAT 04-339 and BHE 04-104. It is a well-known fact that Namibianfarmers attach much importance to good meat traits. Many farmers are in ox productionsystems and know exactly what to select for the best carcass production. WAT04-339 constantly breeds good meat bulls and HART 10-123 is no exception. His dam BHE 04-140 is one of the top cows in the herd. Her AFC is 30 months, ICP of355 days for 6, Reproduction Index of 115 and 75% stud approval percentage. She hasan outstanding daughter, HART 07-0057, in the herd with AFC 20 months, ICP of 361 days for 5, Reproduction Index of125 and 100% stud approval of the 3 calves presented.HART 10-123 is a perfect example of adaptability – excellent quality hide and coat, loose skin (14 mm thick) with sufficientdewlap, good hump development, strong legs and good hooves. He is a masculine bull with good darkening, stronghead, adequate eyebrow-ridge development and well-formed scrotum. The pre-auction scrotal circumference is 39 cm.The scrotum hangs well and is without hairs. The functional efficiency traits of HART 10-123 are excellent – from theclean underline to the strong topline. He is meaty – just look at the good muscle development, splendid depth through theforequarter, width and capacity. The loin areas, slope of rump as well as the inner and outer thighs is packed with meat. Hiseye-muscle surface area and early fat deposition breeding values are first class – we emphasize these values becausetheir accuracy is important to Hartebeestloop. We have been doing ultrasonic scanning of all bulls for more than 10 years.HART 10-123 is a typical “All-Rounder All-Purpose” bull which can be used on cows and well-grown-out heifers. Hisbreeding values are excellent with very good growth, sufficient milk and outstanding height/length ratio of 1:25. If you lookthrough the catalogue you will see that the Hartebeestloop bulls have superb length. He performs extremely well underperformance testing – indices of 103 for wean, 114 ADG and 107 Kleiber. Pelvis index of 107 and Hartebeestloop VeldBull index of 118 – how can you improve on this?HART 10-123 is a potential stud bull. He is one of my WAT 04-339 son selections of the auction. Keep an eye on him ifyou are looking for a bull to pair with your slightly heavy-muscled cows.LOT 30 : HART 09 - 304Again a very strong AG 03-29 son with an outstanding Hartebeestloop mother, HART06-080. She is a BHE 02-74 daughter and I have already said on many occasions thatthe female progeny of BHE 02-74 performs extremely well on Hartebeestloop. Theyare very fertile with high reproduction potential. His female progeny retention in theherd is very high. HART 06-080’s AFC is 26 months, ICP of 380 days for 5 calves,Reproduction Index of 116, average wean index of 101 for 4 calves and 100% approvalfor calves on offer. She is part of the “Royal Family” of cows at Hartebeestloop.HART 09-304 is a medium frame bull with outstanding adaptability traits. It is immediately obvious that he is content andsatisfied in his environment. His condition is good throughout and he maintains his constitution right through the seasons. The hide and coat are as good as they can become, hide is loose and movable and legs and claws are very good.Bonsmara bulls must have good humps and it can be seen here.He is a robust, masculine bull with an alert attitude, strong head with good eyebrow-ridges. His scrotal circumferencewas 32.7 cm at the end of the growth test and now measures 36 cm prior to auction. His scrotum breeding value isnegative. Our primary objective is the meat industry - we breed bulls whose progeny deliver sufficient meat for the meat producerto farm successfully. HART 09-304 is a very good example of the above-mentioned premise. He has good length(height/length 1:22), with good depth through the forequarter, strong musculature and very good capacity. His eye-musclesurface is much better than breed average and so is his early fat deposition. This is reflected in his good condition, whichhe retains. There is very good meat deposition in the loins, slope of rump, hindquarter, inside and outside thighs and nomeat wastage under the knee/elbow line. His breeding values are excellent. He is light at birth (35 kg) and presents outstanding growth ability with very goodfeed efficiency. He weans 289 kg with wean index of 107, growth with ADG index of 112 and shows Kleiber index of 109– he is an overall top performer.HART 09-304 is a top auction bull and can be used on well-grown-out heifers and cows. Stud breeders who want toimprove scrotal circumferences are not going to consider him. For any other farmer who wants to improve build, growth, meat production and adaptability, he is the ideal bull.17

LOT 36 : HART 10 - 182He is bred from MMJ 03-164 and BHE 00-114. She is an outstanding cow with AFCof 29 months, ICP of 391 days for 10 calves and Reproduction Index of 110. She hasnow been certified as being in calf with her 11th calf. Some of the cows just get betterthe older they get. As long as her dentition holds she will produce.HART 10-182 is a medium frame (type 3,5) bull that once again shows very goodadaptability traits. Hide and coat are glossy and smooth; the skin is movable and hasa good thickness of 16 mm. It is immediately obvious that he has adapted to and is satisfied with his circumstances. Thetail is long with good setting, hump development is good and the legs are strong with good hooves. He is on a farm withrocky terrain and his walking ability between the rocks is excellent. He is masculine with a strong head, good eyebrow-ridges, nice darkening and well-formed scrotum. He immediatelycreates the impression of a robust and masculine bull which is well aware of his surroundings. His scrotal circumferencewas 33,4 cm at the end of the growth test and is now 41 cm prior to auction. His sheath/navel flap combination could havebeen better.HART 10-182’s build, length (height/length ratio of 1:26), topline and musculature are all very good. He presents a verygood slope and length of rump, a strong hindquarter with good thighs, broad hocks and nice width throughout. Capacityand depth are sufficient and the tortoise muscle and forearms show good muscle form. You can see at once that the bull ispacked with meat and that his frame is correct. He has very good balance with the hindquarter, mid-piece and forequarterin good proportion. He is a Top Performer with wean index of 106 (he weighs 301 kg at wean), ADG index of 111, Kleiberindex of 102, pelvis index of 107 and Veld Bull index of 114.His breeding values are very good with only the wean maternal value being below breeding average. His growth ability, feed efficiency and reproduction ability breeding values are of the best. He does justice to his breeding values throughhis performance.HART 10-182 is a very good bull with excellent qualities and traits. Size him up to see whether you can fit himinto your herd. You won’t regret it and he will introduce his strong traits into your herd.Besoek gerus ons webwerfwww.bonsmara.com.navir baie meer inligting oor die veiling!Sien ons belofte oor gratis vervoer in Namibië.Dit is maklik om diere vanaf Namibië naSuid-Afrika te vervoer - ons doen dit vir jou, gratis!18

LOT 37 : HART 10 - 162He is bred from KHB 04-168 and VBB 07-220. She was sold to Chris Visser ofSkatkis Bonsmaras. KHB 04-168 was sold as part of the provision of proven studsires to Tollie van Tonder of Komaweer Bonsmaras. We used HART 10-162 ourselves in the stud. He impressed us as a young bull, especiallywith regard to build, hindquarter, good condition on the veld and masculinity. All 3meat traits measured with ultrasonic scanning impressed us – early fat deposition, sizeof eye-muscle surface area and marbling. He stays in good condition on the veld, evennow as grazing becomes scarce he is still one of the best with regard to condition. He is superbly adapted to the extensive conditions – hide and coat are very good, hump development is good and thelegs are strong with very good hooves. He presents very good masculinity with a strong head, good eyebrow-ridgedevelopment, nice darkening in the neck area and good scrotum. His scrotal circumference was 33,5 cm at the end of thegrowth test and measures now 40 cm prior to auction. It is symmetrical, smooth and hangs well.He is a medium frame bull which should preferably only be used on cows. His strong muscle build, outstanding widththroughout, heavier birth weight (40 kg) and very good growth ability do not make him suitable for use on heifers. There isgood length (height/length ratio 1:23), sufficient capacity and depth and strong topline with good rump. He is a TopPerformer with wean index (101), ADG index (116), Kleiber index (116) and Veld Bull index (118). He does well everywhereand especially on the veld he comes into his own. He is still among the cows – and I will only take him out on 15April. Have a good look at his condition on the photo for a bull still working with cows ready for pairing. His breeding values are very good throughout. He is heavier than the breeding average on birth direct but from then onall the breeding values for growth ability, feed efficiency, body measurements and reproduction ability are among the best.As you read the descriptions of the bulls you form an image of what is important to us at Hartebeestloop. Good growthon the veld, gaining the correct condition fast, good muscle development with excellent build, balanced breeding valuesand outstanding own performances – all this you will find in HART 10-162. Stud breeders must have a good look at him.LOT 38 : HART 10 - 88He is bred from MMJ 03-164 and BHE 03-005. MMJ 03-164 comes from Dr WynandBasson and his nickname was “Dikgat”. Of course this referred to his outstandinghindquarters. Unfortunately the bull is dead. BHE 03-005’s AFC is 29 months, ICPof 447 for 7, Reproduction Index of 101, her wean weight ratio is 47,4% and she has100% stud approval of calves presented. This proves that in general the Fortresscows have done exceptionally well with us.HART 10-088 is a medium frame (frame type 3,5) bull which can only be used oncows. He is heavier than breeding average on birth direct, has excellent growth ability, heavy mature weight, strong legstructure, hardy muscles and high shoulder height measurements. All these characteristics are contra-indications for hisuse on heifers. He has very good adaptability traits – smooth, glossy hide and coat, nice hump, very strong legs with goodhooves and good walking ability. He has good balance and is well “put together”.There is good masculinity – strong, masculine head, good eyebrow-ridges, nice darkening with good scrotum position. The scrotal circumference was 31,6 cm at the end of the growth test and measures now 42 cm prior to auction. It hangssymmetrically and is well-formed. His sheath angle and length leave a little to be desired but they are far within the breedstandard.HART 10-088’s strength lies in his meat traits. There is length (height/length ratio 1:21), good muscle development, depth through the forequarter, capacity and strong topline. The hindquarter, the length and slope of the rump as well asouter thighs are all very well formed and have plenty of meat. He is a long bull and usually long bulls tend to be slightlylean around the loin. His loin has an abundance of meat. The hocks are broad and the muscles are attached low on thehocks. HART 10-088’s profile is that of a perfect beefer bull! His breeding values are typical of what can be expected of such a bull. Heavy at birth, lower than breeding average onmilk, outstanding growth ability, good feed efficiency and large body measurements. His average daily weight gain indexis 101 and his Veld Bull index is 102. Despite his larger frame he is well adapted and performs well during the Veld Bulltest. If you are a producer of weaner calves and/or oxen, this is the bull for you. It does not matter whether you carry out apure Bonsmara or crossbreeding system. He will introduce adaptability and very good growth. He will also be of greatbenefit in any system where you want to increase frame size, weight and growth – of course within the limits of ourextensive conditions.19

LOT 39 : HART 10 - 111He is bred from HJS 03-016 and NGO 00-095. Over the years we have had much successby pairing specific RSA bulls with the more respiratory Namibian female animals.AG 98-338 and HJS 03-016 are both bulls that have done very well in this type of“corrective” pairing. NGO 00-095 comes from Woestyn Bonsmaras – AFC is 25 months,ICP is 436 days for 9 calves, average wean index is 110 for 7, Reproduction Index is105 and she obtains 80% stud approval of calves presented.HART 10-111 is a medium frame, “All-Rounder All-Purpose” bull that can be used on heifers and cows. He is smoothand has a glossy hide and coat, thick and movable skin (note the wide skin folds in the neck and dewlap), a good hump, long tail, clean underline and strong legs and hooves. Some animals are just auction- or market-ready faster than others. He has high milk breeding value and his progeny also ought to have very good milk traits.HART 10-111 is a bull that has done very well in every facet of evaluation. The bullis very well balanced and has good adaptability traits. Take a good look at the bull’s strong legs and the broad hocks formuscle attachment. His condition on the veld proves that there is good adaptability – his condition improves easily andretains constitution throughout the seasons. This bull can go to any area and he will adapt and perform well.He is a robust and masculine bull. The bull has good growth and verygood meat traits. His calves will have good weight and earn lots of money. Commercial farmers would do well to put atick next to his number.LOT 44 : HART 10 - 19He is bred from KHB 04-168 (Johann Myburgh Kings Heath Bonsmaras) and BHE04-187. Her AFC is 27 months, ICP of 364 days for 6 calves, average wean index of100 for 6 and Reproduction Index of 116. All her calves are bulls and she has an 80%stud approval of her bull calves. Very good bulls of hers were sold to Edward Hansen(EMOK Bonsmaras), Andrè du Plessis and Arnold Klein. She is doing extremely wellwith us and is part of the top group Elite cows.HART 10-19 is a medium frame bull with very good adaptability traits. From hide andcoat, hump development, tail, right through to legs and claws he is built for extensive conditions. We are making moreand more use of the condition point during the Veld Bull test to correlate adaptability traits with condition on the veld. It isalmost always the case that there is a strong correlation between a good condition point and adaptability as evaluated byBonsmara. HART 10-19 is again one of the bulls with excellent breeding values for meat traits (early fat deposition andvery good eye-muscle surface). He combines these aforementioned traits with good growth during the growth test – ADGindex of 105 and Kleiber index of 104. He performs exceptionally well during the Veld Bull test with an index of 110. Goodgrowth on the veld and gaining correct condition fast – that is exactly what you get with HART 10-19.His secondary masculinity traits are well developed – the head is masculine and strong, good eyebrow-ridges, wide jaw, good width between the eyes and nice darkening in the neck area. His scrotal circumference was 38 cm at the end ofthe growth test and is now 42 cm prior to auction. Unfortunately the scrotum is rotated as can be seen on the photo. LOT 45 : HART 10 - 188He is bred from WAT 04-339 and WCS 07-54. She was sold to Chris Visser of SkatkisBonsmaras in 2011. WAT 04-339 is our “meat bull stud sire” at Hartebeestloop. He isconstantly breeding very good meat traits and his progeny are generally topperformers where meat traits are measured. They are doing consistently well duringultrasonic scanning and we can see clearly that the trait of early fat deposition andgaining condition on the veld early are highly inherited by his progeny. His heifers arealways among the very first whose condition is right to be bred.HART 10-188 is a medium frame “All-Rounder All-Purpose” bull that can be used on cows and heifers. We have usedthe WAT 04-339 bloodline with great success on young heifers. He presents excellent adaptability traits with splendid hideand coat, thick skin that measures 19 mm, wide skin folds, strong hump, long tail and strong legs with good claws.Adaptability is also measured during the Veld Bull test and his Veld Bull index of 122 shows that he has done exceptionallywell. He is always in good condition on the veld.He is a masculine bull with a strong head, acceptable eyebrow-ridges, good darkening and very good scrotum. Hisscrotal circumference was 37,6 cm at the end of the extensive growth test and is now 44 cm prior to auction. The scrotumhangs perfectly and is smooth. He is a very well balanced bull with outstanding meat traits. His build is very good with good length, width, depth andcapacity. The topline is very strong with good slope and length of rump, the hindquarter is well developed and the thighsare full of meat. His muscle development is also very good. He weans 273 kg with a wean index of 100, ADG index of 115,Kleiber index of 112, pelvis index of 103, Veld Bull index of 122 and his breeding values for eye-muscle surface area, earlyfat deposition and marbling are all above breeding average. Here are outstanding performances! His breeding values are also excellent and exactly how all of us prefer them to be.HART 10-188 is a late arrival to our auction. But we also have to keep good animals for last otherwise there is a chancethat the auction fizzles out towards the end. Have a good look at the appearance of the bull, his pedigree, his ownmeasured performances, his breeding values and all the other economically important traits that have been measured andthen come to an informed decision.LOT 46 : HART 09 - 246He is bred from the mainstay AG 98-338 and AEJ 06-049. The combination betweenArcadia Bonsmaras and NOSA Bonsmaras has worked well for us on several occasions.AEJ 06-049’s AFC is 27 months, ICP of 371 days for 5 calves, ReproductionIndex of 115 and 100% stud approval of calves presented.HART 09-246 is a medium frame “All-Rounder All-Purpose” bull which can be usedon cows and well-grown-out calves. His adaptability traits are some of the beston auction. His hide and coat are outstanding, smooth and glossy, loose and easily movable, and his heat regulationis certainly one of the best. His tail is long, there is nice hump development and the legs and hooves are very strong. His walking ability across the dunes and in the loose sand is exceptional. He is a robust bull with good masculinity, goodeyebrow-ridges, nice darkening in the neck area and a well-formed scrotum. It hangs symmetrically and has a good size. The scrotal circumference was 34,6 cm at the end of the growth test and is now 39 cm prior to auction.HART 09-246’s build, length and muscle development are of top quality. The topline is strong, the rump andhindquarter are very good, as are the inner and outer thighs. There is good width, sufficient capacity and nice depththrough the forequarter and the loins and rump are loaded with meat. The hocks are broad and the muscle attachmentextends down low to the hocks. The tortoise muscle is well developed and the forearms are well muscled and wide. Thetail setting as well as the sheath/navel flap combination could have been better. But this does not detract from the otherexcellent traits the bull presents. His breeding values are acceptable – low on birth direct (birth weight 31 kg) with moderate growth figures.HART 09-246 is a strong bull for the commercial market. Stud breeders may discriminate against the rough tailsetting and sheath/navel flap combination and give the bull a miss. That creates a perfect opportunity for the commercialfarmer to obtain a bull of exceptional genetic potential. He will be superb in any herd – whether pure Bonsmara or in acrossbreeding system.23

LOT 47 : HART 09 - 306He is bred from AG 03-29 and HART 07-57. She comes from the very top performingmotherlines at Hartebeestloop. These motherlines are exceptional, difficultto breed and form the foundation on which our herd was built. The combination withAG 03-29 worked well in this instance.HART 09-306 is a medium frame bull which should preferably only be used on cows. He is wide with very hard musculatureand this may cause calving problems with heifers. He presents very good adaptability traits with splendid hide andcoat, good hump development, strong legs and hooves, with a long tail. He is heavy and carries a lot of meat, but it isremarkable with what ease he moves over the dunes. He sinks into the loose sand almost up to his pasterns but he has nodifficulty covering long distances. Itmeasured 32,2 cm at the end of the growth test and now 38 cm prior to auction. It is smooth and hangs symmetrically. But the scrotal breeding value is negative. The underline is good and the sheath/navel flap combination is also very good.HART 09-306 carries a large amount of meat. There is good length (height/length ratio of 1:22), a strong topline, goodcapacity, very good depth through the forequarter and good muscle development. He shot up during the extensive growth test and finished with ADG and Kleiber indices of 107.Stud breeders will penalize the bull for his negative scrotal circumference breeding value. This opens the door forcommercial farmers to obtain a top bull at a reasonable price. HART 09-306 will make a great contribution to any herdand farmers would do well to keep him in mind. He will be of very great value in an upgrade breeding program orcrossbreeding.LOT 48 : HART 09 - 294He is bred from BHE 04-35 which is an RCO 98-37 son.
