A Warm Welcome to Year 6 at <strong>Hornbill</strong> <strong>School</strong>Dear <strong>Parents</strong>Welcome back. We hope you have had an enjoyable Summerbreak and that the children are ready for yet anotherfun-filled Year! This Year our classes will be led byMrs Brown (Y6 Mantis) and Mr Ratcliffe (Y6 Scorpion). Allchildren in Year 6 will be supported by our highlyexperienced and talented Nepali Specialist Teacher: MrsDewan. We are all looking forward to what we know will be ahighly successful and excited year.Term 1: War and Peace. In this theme the children will belooking at the causes and effects of war. They will bestudying the Second World War in depth and finding outwhat life was like for people both at home and on the frontlines. Children will get the opportunity to think about howthey can contribute to a peaceful future.Term 2: To Infinity and Beyond. Children will be blastingoff into orbit during this theme in order to find out moreabout space travel and its impact on our planet. They will bestudying the history of the space race and writing their ownscience fiction stories.Term 3: Where do we live? The pupils of <strong>Hornbill</strong> <strong>School</strong> arelucky enough to spend a period of their lives enjoying thedelights of South East Asia. During this theme, they willexplore the geography and culture of the region.Our Aim is for every child to achieve success in everythingthey set out to do. Information about Year 6HomeworkIn Year 6, homework should provide activities which require deepthinking and extensive enquiry. These exercises will flow naturally fromlessons conducted in class and be an extension of the thinking whichgoes on in school. <strong>Parents</strong> can expect their child to have regularprojects to complete and questions to investigate. These may haveextended deadlines and may not necessarily involve any writing; they maysimply involve reading, thinking and asking questions.In addition to this, pupils will be expected to read a variety of fictionand non-fiction genres and to complete their reading journal regularly; tolearn how to spell and understand the definitions of a weekly vocabularylist; and to know by heart their multiplication tables and related divisionfacts. These are on going homework tasks.Scientific & Technical UnderstandingIn Term 3 we will focus on More about Dissolving and Reversible andIrreversible Changes. Where possible, these science topics will betailored to suit each individual’s chosen research theme.Understanding the ArtsMusic– to develop the ability to play and sing more complex parts as part of a largermusical group.DT—to design and make a 3D map of Kensuke’s Kingdom.Art— Batik and Japanese artRE– Why do believers often see life as a journey?If you have any concerns about the homework your child is receiving,please feel free to drop in and speak to a member of the Year 6 team.Physical DevelopmentAll children this term will continue to take part in two PE sessions perweek (swimming on Monday up until February half-term and PE onWednesday). Please can you ensure that your child has the correct<strong>Hornbill</strong> P.E. kit and appropriate footwear on these days. Children maywear their PE kit to school as PE is first thing in the morning. Term 1Our Launch Pad will involve anattempt to educate the children onthe plight of the Jews during theSecond World War. Randomlyselected groups will have certainprivileges taken away and will bemade to wear badges and clothesthat identify them as beingdifferent. Don’t worry, it willonly last a couple of hours!Term 2Pupils will be challenged to designtheir own bottle rocket and wewill compete to see whose fliesthe furthest. There will also be an‘alien’ fancy dress theme.Scientific & Technical UnderstandingIn Term 2 we will focus on Forces in Action, Changing Circuits, and HowWe See Things. These science topics will enjoy a sympathetic relationshipwith our theme and enable a more coherent and holistic curriculum.Understanding the ArtsMusic-we will compose an ’Earth Anthem’ using digital music.DT—to design and make a rocket & model electric car.Art—sketch and paint impressions of space.RE-to understand human ideas about our values, origins and future and how thesehave been incorporated into the practice of Hinduism and Christianity.Term 3A geography field trip will beplanned encouraging the childrento think more deeply about theircurrent locality. Geography skillswill be at the heart of this Unitand children will become moreadept at reading maps andatlases.Our values this termwill be:CareConcernCreativityHistorical, Geographical andSocial UnderstandingWe will use the internet to search for &interpret information, and use this tocreate multimedia presentations usingPowerPoint. To Infinity and Beyond!Space…the final frontier! Children’s cross-curricular learning forTerm 2 is focused on the Solar System and the Universe startingwith the ‘Big Bang’ and other creation theories. We will alsoinvestigate the exploration of space and all of its wonders.Understanding English Communication & LanguageTerm 3’s English will consist of writing non-chronological reports about theplanets within our solar system and poetry describing our world. We willalso explore links to sustainability and study science fiction writing andparables. Children will also use their imagination to write accounts ofspace flights.Mathematical UnderstandingWe will be following the National Numeracy Framework. Areas of coverage willinclude: place value; problem solving using written calculation skills & informalmethods; fractions, decimals, percentages & ratios; shape, space & measures;number patterns & sequences; data handling & probability.Theme Outcomes• Improve children’s knowledge ofour solar system and galaxy.• Learn about human ingenuity andendeavour.• Study the history of flight andspace exploration.• Increase children’s awareness ofthe Earth as ‘our home’, itsuniqueness and how we need tocare for it.Modern Foreign LanguageChildren will be introduced toSpanish vocabulary which willhelp them name objects from theclassroom. Rules of Spanishgrammar will start to beintroduced.Term 2The children will be challenged to designand build their own space stations.Imagination and creativity are key for thischallenge!<strong>Parents</strong> will no doubt be keen to help out!Term 1<strong>Parents</strong> will be invited to viewthe children’s PowerPointpresentations on theHolocaust.
