Rayong
Welcome to Rayong!
Eastern Thailand, with it’s 400 km coastline is best known for it’s beaches,
seafood and tropical fruits. When visiting Rayong, it is well worth to make a trip
to see Mae Phim, Ban Phe and Mae Ramphung and enjoy these places. They
are cozy little beachside villages, each with their own unique charm.
Rayong city is located proximately 150 kilometers Southeast from Suvarnabhumi
Airport. If driving by car or taxi, the trip takes approximately 2 hours.
Rayong is a gem for those who want to get away from the tourist traps and
experience genuine Thailand for a relaxing holiday. Here you are exempt from the
beach vendors and loud bars. Rayong town is a fishing village of a larger kind.
Down at the harbor you will be able to see the colorful fishing boats (Kor Lae)
which are situated in endless rows while the catch of the day is sorted.
Even though most of the people in these areas do not speak English, you will
more than likely be met with cheerful pleasant smiles.
From Ban Phe the boats depart to one of Thailand’s most beautiful islands,
Koh Samet. Here you find the most beautiful beaches you can imagine.
That is what Samet is best known for. Roll out your bath towel on the white
sandy beach, swim in crystal clear waters and enjoy the laid-back life.
From Koh Samet you can see across the water to Mae Phim and Mae
Ramphung, both located about 15 minutes in either direction from Ban Phe.
BEACHES
Laem Mae Phim Beach
Beaches in Rayong
Mae Phim Beach Suan Son Beach
The beach of Mae Phim is usually
described as “one of the best
mainland beaches in Thailand”.
4.3 km long, of which 2/3 are natural
beach while the other portion has
restaurants and sun chairs. Under
the umbrellas on the beach is fresh
seafood served at low prices. From
the beach, it takes about 20 minutes
by speedboat to the paradise island
of Koh Samet. The slow boat (100
baht) departs from Ban Phe.
Mae Rumphung Beach
Not far from Rayong we find Mae
Rumphung Beach which is a full
12 kilometers long. Along the beach
relieves hotels, restaurants, shopping
stalls and mini-marts together. Mae
Rumphung is on the way to Ban Phe,
25 minutes by car from Rayong.
Ramphung has become known for
Europeans in recent years but is still
especially popular for Thais to spend
their holiday on.
Approximately one kilometer from the
fishing village of Ban Phe is Suanson
Beach and it extends about one km.
There are restaurants and shopping
stands situated along the beach
roads. In the shade tree areas of
the small beach restaurants, fresh
seafood and Thai food are served.
From the beach you can usually
spot Ban Phe and the colorful fishing
boats skimming the clear blue water.
In the distance you can see the very
tall condominiums and apartments
in Mae Ramphung. Many European
families have also found their second
home here at Suan Son, Ban Phe!
Kens Beach
Just a few kilometers from Mae Phim
on the way to Ban Phe, we find a
pair of beautiful beaches that have
become especially popular among
foreigners who visit Mae Phim.
Visit us at: www.alltomthailand.com www.arrivalthailand.com
We are talking about Coca-Cola
Beach, Kim’s Beach, and Ken Beach.
Nicknames are a part of everyday life
here in Thailand and beaches are no
exception. Often the beach is named
after a resort or restaurant who want
to claim the beach as their own.
Coca-Cola beach lies about 3-4 km
to the West of Mae Phim. You find it
after turning by the big Coke & Pepsi
sign, hence the name of the beach.
2 km more away is Ken and Kim’s
Beach.
Laem Charoen Beach is the beach
closest to Rayong. It is located about
5 kilometers from the city. This beach
is mainly visited by Thai people, but
everyone is welcome. The seafood
here is especially good and fresh.
Saeng Chan Beach is joined to
Laem Charoen Beach and is located
approximately 7 kilometers from
Rayong. If you are hungry or ned a
drink, you can drop in to the small
restaurants here and grab a bite of
some good food and drink.
Phayun Beach lies about 32 kilometers
west from Rayong. Enjoy the
beautiful sandy beaches and cool off
with a swim before the sun sets for
the day.
Phla Beach If you continue 3 kilometers
from Phayun Beach you will
come to Phla Beach. Here you can
enjoy a peaceful day at the beach,
sunbathing and swimming or take it
easy in the shade of the trees.

RAYONG ISLANDS
Koh Mun Nork
Some of Thailand’s most beautiful islands
Koh Samet
Koh Samet is one of the most beautiful
islands in Thailand. Here you find
gorgeous beaches, beautiful coral
reefs and wounderful cozy restaurants.
The island is a marine national
park and popular destination for Thai
people, but mostly during weekends.
One reason is that Samet is easily
accessible from Bangkok (about 2.5
hours). Also a lot of Europeans have
fallen in love with the island. It is the
perfect refuge for those who want
to take it easy for a few days, weeks
or years. If you compare Koh Samet
with other more tourist-intensive
places there is not the same range
of activities. Here reigns serenity,
beaches and a laid-back existence.
Koh Kudi
East of Koh Samet and about six
kilometers from the mainland you find
Koh Kudi, also known as Koh Kudee
or Koh Kut. Here the water is very
clear and you can sink into the fine
sand and just enjoy doing absolutely
nothing. The island has only one
beach which excludes decision anxiety.
Swim, sunbathe, snorkel or take
a walk to discover the island on your
own. Koh Kudi suits excellent for a
day trip and gives a little variety to the
mainland beach during your vacation.
Koh Chan
If you find yourself on Koh Samet, it
is not far to go to Koh Chan. It is a bit
south of Koh Samet. It is important
not to confuse Koh Chan with Koh
Chang. You get there to experience
the fantastic snorkeling at the island’s
southern coast. If you want to head
out to deeper water for diving, you
should go to Koh Chan southeast
coast. Here you can find depths
around 12 meters but may in some
places go down to as deep as 25
meters. The marine life at Koh Chan
is awesome and you can encounter
lion fishes, sharks and stingrays and
other colorful smaller species.
Koh Mun islands
Koh Mun islands are located just east
of Rayong, approximately 5 km from
Laem Mae Phim beach. The islands
are incredibly peaceful and beautiful.
Here it is easy to find harmony. The
archipelago consists of three islands:
Koh Mun Nai, Koh Mun Klang and
Koh Mun Nork. Koh Mun Nai is the
turtle sanctuary that was founded by
Thailand’s Queen Sirikit. Here, the
beautiful sea turtles are bred and well
taken care of before being released
into their natural habitat.
Koh Talu
Visit us at: www.alltomthailand.com www.arrivalthailand.com
Koh Talu is a paradise beyond mainland
with beautiful beaches and great
snorkeling. On Koh Talu you can expect
to be almost to yourself as there
is no one living on this island. There
are also few tourists and no beach
vendors. On the east side there are
nice beaches while the western side
has the most mountains and cliffs.
The rest of the island consists of
forest. Snorkeling is especially good
on the back side of the island.
One of the cliff walls on the West side
of the island has a hole in it, and that
is where the island gets it’s name.
Talu means “hole” in Thai.

GOLF AROUND
It is over 100 years since golf was
introduced to Thailand and today
there are over 220 courses across
the country. Most of them are located
in the regions around Bangkok and
Pattaya. There are courses around
Pattaya which you can access from
Rayong. In this region of Thailand it
is very affordable to play golf. If you
have a membership in the Pattaya
Golf Club, you can play at greatly
reduced prices on more than 20 golf
courses. Membership of PSC costs
around 2,900 Thb for 6 years. The
green fees are about 500 Thb.
Wang Juntr
There is a very unique golf course
located about 30 minutes drive from
Rayong which has two 18-hole
courses to choose from, Highland
Course, Valley Course and an additional
18-hole course to open
in 2011, The Jungle Course. The
Highland is Thailand’s longest golf
course. From Back Tee it measures
6,840 meters with a par 5 (probably
the best hole) that is an entire 690
Yards (about 621 meters), one of the
longest par 5 holes in Thailand. You
can find an additional 10 tracks in a
one hour drive from Rayong.
www.wangjuntrgolf.com
Laem Chabang Golf Course
Laem Chabang Golf is a Jack
Nicklaus creation and ranks as one
of Thailand’s best courses. Three
nine-hole loops, with mountains and
lakes and the third is characterized
by terrain with creeks. An outstanding
variety of themes. The natural
environment creates the perfect
backdrop to the beautifully manicured
fairways. Always in top condition so
you can enjoy yourself, even on the
days when your golf swing takes time
to get into action. There are 9 illuminated
holes for evening golf.
www.laemchabanggolf.com
Khao Keow Country Club
Khao Khew Golf is a 27-hole course
along Route 36 on the way from
Pattaya. It takes just over an hour to
reach the track from Rayong and is
about 40 minutes from Pattaya. Like
so many of the courses along the
eastern coast, there is often strong
winds along the path so you have to
plan every shot carefully. Even beauty
obstacles like large ponds, bunkers
and hills that surround the greens
and fairways will make you have to
think before you strike. A course you
certainly will want to return to.
www.khaokheowgolf.com
Wangjuntr golf Club - Rayong
Siam Country Club
Siam Country Club is one of the more
famous courses. Over the years, the
course has hosted several international
competitions, in 2008 and
2010 Honda LPGA Classic for example.
The course is in impeccable condition
and maintained meticulously.
-The Old Course at Siam Country
Club is around the low hills just a few
kilometers from Pattaya. There are
many golf holes that cross lakes and
weave through strategically landscaped
streams. Long, straight
drives are needed to land on the
narrow fairways.
St Andrews
Visit us at: www.alltomthailand.com www.arrivalthailand.com
St. Andrews 2000 is located in a picturesque,
hilly landscape in province
of Rayong. Designed by Desmond
Muirhead, St. Andrews opened for
play in 2000, hence the name, and
that they wanted to honor his namesake
in Scotland. There are two monsters
of holes (par 6) no 4 and hole
13, which weighs in at 855 and 857
Yards. A visually stunning, sweeping
layout that must rank among the best
new courses in the country.
SHOPPING
Laem Thong shoppinggmall, Rayong
Laem Mae Phim
In Laem Mae Phim you will not find
any big shopping. This haven is more
for relaxation and enjoying a peaceful
time while on your vacation. There are
small shops that sell curtains made of
seashells and other local souvenirs.
Even swimsuits and pool toys are
available in both the small shops
and in the large truck that traffics the
main road. There is also a mini-mart
on the beach where you find beverages,
ice cream and other necessary
things. (yes…we consider ice cream
a necessity). Take the opportunity to
buy a souvenir T-shirt with Mae Phim
printed on it and your fortune will be
made : )
Ban Phe
In Ban Phe there is not a lot of shopping,
except from curtains made of
seashells and some clothing. Maybe
a new hat or a new sarong! Petras is
a grocery store that many foreigners
like. They have most of the things
that other stores do not have, like
imports, wine, cheese, Olives, sausages,
hamburger and even Kraft
Macaroni and Cheese. Do not miss
the local market on the outskirts of
Ban Phe. Small shops that mostly sell
T-shirts, trinkets and some food. Outside
you will find the market selling
dried shrimp, squid and other dried
products. You may also see some of
the clothing vendors.
Rayong Town
The best shopping you will find in
Rayong is at Laem Tong Shopping
Center with shops and restaurants.
Here you will also find bowling and
cinemas. Big C, Tesco Lotus, Computer
City, Index, Home Pro, Home
Mart, SB Furniture and many other
stores. Clothing, watches, shoes and
jewelry can also be found in Laem
Tong. You can recognize the building
from all blue arches on the facade
and walking bridge that goes over
the road connecting to Laem Tong.
In Rayong there are local markets
to stroll around in order to see what
is available. Going to the market is
an experience in itself, regardless of
whether you buy something or not.
You will find everything in the markets,
from fruit and fish to souvenirs
and used scooter parts to maybe that
cool little MP3 player you’ve been
looking for.
Shopping in Ban Phe Klaeng, Tesco/Lotus
Ban Phe
Klaeng
Klaeng, Tesco
Visit us at: www.alltomthailand.com www.arrivalthailand.com
Klaeng is a genuine small Thai city.
You can find both food stores, markets
and other small shops for easier
shopping. On Tuesdays there is a BIG
market, a few 100 meters up the road
344 to BKK. Thursdays they have the
market in Klaeng city which is a little
bit smaller.
-Tesco Lotus has a cinema (speaking
and subtitled in Thai) and some other
smaller shops. In Klaeng the shopping
are focused to the local population,
locally made merchandise and
other goodies.
Pattaya
If you looking for shopping on a larger
scale the nearest town is Pattaya.
From Rayong, it takes just over an
hour to Pattaya by car and it costs
around 2,000 baht by taxi (booked
car with driver, 2-ways). You find
Mike’s Shopping Plaza, Royal Garden
Plaza and Central Festival. Mike´s
is the oldest shopping house while
Central opened its doors in 2011.
There are a lot of vendors along Pattaya
Beach Road. There you can find
clothes, bags, shoes, jewelry and
decor.

Swim-toys-truck
Already after a day in Mae Phim,
you will surely have seen the truck
that goes back and forth on the
main road. Over-screened with
bath toys, it is a field day for the
young ones. The fact that they
charge more for their goods than
the stores around does not matter
when the 5-year-old stand and
shout, I waaaaant that .... We peek
behind the scenes and see who
runs the daily business.
Behind the wheel, we find Tat who
drives the truck a couple of miles
and then make a u-turn and back
again. Hi and his wife Uang has ben
working 20 years together in the
truck. It’s not only swim-toys, they
also sell drinks and a lot of other
stuff. The business has changed over
the years and some of the products
has been increased and sometimes
replaced. What is the most popular
selling product we wonder?
Undoubtedly the air mattresses are
great sellers respond Uang, from 390
baht to 1,500 baht for the largest
boat, with oars included!
Mae Phim Island
You’ve been in Mae Phim for a while
and you’re beginning to wonder about
the small island outside the coast.
Yes, actually it is more than a great
pile of big stones. But, on the other
hand there is a few meters of beach
on the opposite side which is really
nice. A couple of days every year
when it’s low tide, it is said that you
can wade out to the island. If you are
a good swimmer you can reach it
during high tide also. Climb up to the
top and wave to your friends on the
beach of Mae Phim!

Restaurants
Phish Café, Mae Phim’s best cocktail destination
Nightlife in Mae Phim
If you booked your ticket to Thailand
with thoughts about partying all night
long until the morning hours, you may
want to consider booking transportation
to another location like Bangkok
or Pattaya. But this is one of the main
reasons that people come to Mae
Phim Beach and return every year. It
is a serene and beautiful beach where
it is easy to relax and enjoy yourself.
However, now that we have started
talking about it, let’s look at what Mae
Phim has to offer in the evening time!
Buffalo Bill Restaurant
Although most of the restaurants in
Mae Phim are child friendly, Buffalo
Bill’s Steakhouse takes first place!
Here you can find a children’s area for
the little ones to entertain themselves
while mom and dad stuff themselves
on mouth watering steaks from
Australia. If you prefer other dishes
there is a large selection on the menu
to choose from. On Saturdays they
have Mae Phims largest buffet table,
which starts at 18.00. The restaurant
is popular and during the high season
you will need to book well in advance!
Have you been out late on Saturday?
Perhaps you should watch out
for this place on Sundays. Every
Sunday “The Buffalo” has arranged
Karaoke Night. This is a blast. Kurt
& Trixie have a huge library of songs
to choose from. Just about any song
ever sung. (from Johnny Cash to
Radiohead to Gotye) “Don’t be shy,
give it a try.” On the restaurants 3rd
floor, you can also challenge the
family on a pool table. Live music
every night with Kurt & Trixie.
Open 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.
Tequila Sunrise
A couple of kilometers down the
“village”, Tequila Sunrise appears.
The menu features Western and Thai
dishes. If you want sausage, schnitzel
with fries, or meatballs with mashed
potatoes, this is the place. For 125
Baht, even the restaurant’s Thai food
is well appreciated. Tequila is the
natural place to visit for those who
comes to Mae Phim. The place is
partially owned by Swedish Calle Mellerot,
32 years of age, but sometimes
you would swear he is 19. Each week
Calle and his aides arranges boat
trips to Koh Man Nai and the nearby
island of Koh Talu. The price is just
below 1,000 B/person for a full day.
Included in price is four beers, two
glasses of wine, water, meatballs,
chicken skewers and potato salad.
Children under two years of age may
ride for free. Snorkel equipment and
life vests on board. -This part of
Thailand is absolutely the best, says
Calle. Mass tourism is absent and
there is a comfortable distance from
both the airport and Bangkok. The
real Thailand reigns and prices are still
lower than in other parts of the country
that being visited more frequently
by tourists. Open 7:30 to 2:00 a.m.
Phish Café Open 16:00 to 02:00
Just a couple hundred meters from
Tequila, we find Mae Phim’s best
cocktail destination, Phish Cafe. If we
look at the wood fascade and modern
interior, it might as well be a place
in Bangkok. The back patio is an
awesome location for a party or just
to sit with a loved one and watch the
beach and listen to the surf. The food
is very tasty. The fish has become
one of my favorites with lemon / lime
sauce, ultra scrumptious. The nice
owner Luck likes mingling among the
guests while drinks are served. Live
music some nights of the week.

Other places to eat & drink
La Capanna
The best Italian restaurant in the
area, yes it is also the only one! But
after you tried the authentic Italian
pasta, you will not go anywhere else.
Pizza and lasagne belongs also to
my favorites. La Capanna has always
served great wines and new for this
season is that they sell wine to bring
home. The nice Italian owner mingling
among the guests, and if youre lucky
he teaches you a few new phrases
that can be useful when you come to
Rome ore Venice next time, for you
have been there? La Capanna had a
nice visit in January 2012 when the
Swedish king and queen peeked in
for dinner. Thats somthing to write
home about :)
Shabu-Shi
This is the restaurant where you grip
plates from the belt that goes around
and around. Anyone who is not alert
enough miss their favorite dish!
Make sure to get a spot close to
the chef and where the band starts,
then you have first dibs on what’s
to choose from. My favorite is still
sushi available at the entrance. Eat as
much as you can for about 290 Baht.
The price also includes Coke, 7-Up
and other cold drinks. Shabu-Shi
is located in the shopping complex
Laem Thong in Rayong.
Mouy Pad Thai Seafood
Not many short-term visitors will find
this restaurant, but those who do are
pleasantly surprised by the good food
and the very low prices. Lot of people
during lunchtime. The Phad Thai is
well-known but try also Pad Krapow
Gai, thats is my favorite! The restaurant
is located just before the big
department store “Pattana”, about
five kilometers from Mae Phim Beach
on the way to Klaeng.
Beach restaurants
You might not have time to try them
all during your stay, but they all serve
really good food and also at affordable
prices. Most often you will find
food to suit all the family. If you not
find Khao Pad on the menu for the
kids they arrange it from a neighbor,
without you need to get out and
look for it so that you can continue
to focus on your somersaults on the
beach :) Service at its best!

Excursions
Riding horse
If you like horses and want to try
to ride, you should head of to the
Slo Bunny stables, located a short
distance west of Ban Phe. For 400
baht, you have a whole hour to gallop
aroundor maybe try out your new
dressage steps. Address: Mae Rumphung
Khao Wong Nationalpark
About 80 kilometers from Rayong,
you can find Khao Wong National
Park. Khao Wong has been a national
park since 1975 and with all their
various trees and plants in the park
this is a Botanist’s dream. Look at
the beautiful waterfalls found in the
park or visit any of the 20 of the 60
caves located in the park. Chamao
Waterfall is one of the four waterfalls
in the park. With eight levels, it is
also the largest waterfall in the park.
Besides waterfalls and caves, you
can also check out the cool limestone
cliffs. A fun trip for sure. -Visit the
National Park between 08:30 and
16:30. Admission cost is 400 Baht. If
you want to stay overnight, there is a
camp nearby where you can stay on
for 50 Baht / night.
Klong Pla Kang Waterfall
In Khao Wong National Park there is
also Klong Pla Kang Waterfall which
is the second largest waterfall in the
park with total of seven levels. It is a
fun challenge to climb up to the top
of the waterfall. Comfortable shoes
are recommended because the trip
requires quite a bit of walking and
there is also a little rock climbing
and forest hiking involved. The walk
is worth the effort once you reach
the top with amazing views of the
waterfall. Make sure you pay attention
to all the lovely plants and flowers on
the trip up.
Canopy Adventures
If you feeling adventurous and you
can disconnect your fear of heights
for a while, you should book an
adventure with Canopy Adventures
Thailand. Swing through the treetops
from platform to platform on a total of
three kilometers of cables. In one day,
you will discover what Da Kao Yai
National Rain Forest has to offer.
It will be an experience you will never
forget! The day also includes a bit of
adventure training for safety and a
question and answer session.
Visit us at: www.alltomthailand.com www.arrivalthailand.com
There are nearly 60 caves in the
National Park. However, only 20
of them can be visited by tourists.
Buddhist monks have taken over
some of the caves and moved in to
make homes there. A copy of what
is thought to be a footprint of the
Buddha can be seen in one of the
caves. This specific cave has become
a small temple.
Classic Forrest / Tamnanpar
Just outside of Ban Phe you can find
the Classic Forest restaurant. This is
a very unique and fun restaurant
with a Forest theme, a dining experience
beyond the ordinary. The setting
is embedded in a natural Forest and
Jungle area that really makes you
feel that you are in the wilderness.
On the trail to the restaurant, you can
stop by to feed the black swans that
glide along the ponds here. During
dinner, you are surrounded by tropical
greenery and waterfalls. The menu
contains both Thai and Western
cuisine to suit everyone. In this area
there is also a spa and a resort on the
site. To get here, it is best to order a
car with driver to take you there and
back again. For larger groups, you
may want to book in advance.
the famous Thai poet Sunthorn Phu
and below, we also find statues of his
most famous works Phra Aphai Mani.
They are a tribute to the work he had
created. Sunthorn Phu is sitting on a
hill, while Phra Aphai Mani beneath is
playing on his flute. In the pool below
the hill you see Naval Virgin sitting
while a giant monster lady comes out
of the water. It is totally free to check
out Sunthorn Phu and the other statues.
There is a small bit of shopping
here. You can find incense, candles,
sea shell curtains, and local Durian
Crisps and other tasty snacks.
Old Town
If you are heading to Rayong, you
should pay a visit to Old Town. On
the way into old-town, you will pass
local food markets where Thais will
surely find it funny that you have
found to their neighborhood. Of
course you will be greeted by friendly
smiles.
Once in Old Town you walk around
among old teakhus. In one of them
there are cafes, while others are
engaged in framing. Visit one of the
Chinese temples in the area. In the
decorative tiled oven outside the
temple they hang firecrackers which
is thanks to the spirits when prayers
become true.
Rayong when the Burmese attacked
Ayutthaya. Since King Taksin was
half Chinese, the temple is built in
Chinese style. There is no cost to
attend the temple. Remember to take
off your shoes before going into some
of the buildings. In the temple, there
is also a box of glass with King Taksin
Monkey Mountain
Monkey Mountain, 4-5 km west of Mae Phim
3-4 km from Mae Phim on the way to
careful! The monkeys get very excited
if they see that you have brought
them food! Up on the hill there is a
temple to visit. There are many steps
up to the temple and I lost count how
many stairs there are halfway up!
Monkeys, temples and a magnificent
established a statue to honor him.
Residents in Rayong also gave him
the new name of Phra Chao Taksin.
Today, the temple and the statue of
Wat Pa Pradu
Visit the Great reclining Buddha figure
which is resting there. The Buddha
figure is almost 36 feet in length and
almost four feet in height. This Buddha
figure, the Reclining Buddha, is
different from all the other lying Buddha
figures in Thailand in that it
rests with his left foot at the bottom,
instead of the right which is the usual.
The Buddha figure is highly respected
among Thais, mostly because of this
unique characteristic. Wat Pa Pradu
is located on Sukhumvit Road in the
center of Rayong and can be reached
by taxi or song-thaew.
It is said that Mae Phim wrecked her
boat where Mae Phim beach begins
on the east side. This is how Mae
Phim got it’s name. They built a temple
at the cape that goes out behind
temple is a representation of Mae
Phim. Many Buddhists come here to
change her outfit and make offerings.
Different colored outfits for different
days. By paying respects and making
offerings, it is said that all wishes
Dive & snorkel
Slow boat to Koh Samet, 100 B
Koh Samet
Six kilometers from the mainland,
from the fishing village of Ban Phe,
lies the paradise island of Koh Samet.
Here you can go on snorkeling excursions
around the island or to the
nearby islands. There are numerous
tour operators offering boat trips
around the island for 400-500 Baht
per person. They make a few stops
for snorkeling at the island’s southern
tip, do some fishing and visit the fish
farm on the north side.
You can also dive around Koh Samet,
in water that is between 10-12 meters
deep. Diving trips can be booked
on the island, such as the Udi’s Dive
Shop at Phai Beach.
Book your tour and experience to see
what Koh Samet has hidden under
water surface. East of Koh Samet
you find the beautiful island of Koh
Kudi or Ko Kudee as it is sometimes
spelled. Here the water is crystal clear
and makes the diving extra special.
Koh Kudee
Many people come to Koh Samet
to get their dive-certificate, however,
it is not the cheapest pleasure. You
can expect to pay around 12,000
Baht and more. When you have had
enough exitement from the ocean,
you can sink into the fine sand and
just enjoy doing absolutely nothing.
Around Koh Kudi the snorkeling
is very good because of the nice
coral reef at the island’s north coast.
Already two meters below the surface
you can find the gigantic coral reefs
that extend 200 meters out.
Koh Chan
Koh Chan is located just south of Koh
Samet. Here you come to experience
great snorkeling at the island’s
southern coast. If you are looking for
deeper water for diving, you should
get to Koh Chans southeast coast.
Here the depths are mostly around
12 meters, but can be up to 25
meters. The marine life at Koh Chan
is awesome and you can encounter
species of fish in all colors, lion fish,
sharks and stingrays. Between snorkeling
sessions, you can relax on the
beautiful beach on the island.
Koh Mun
islands
Koh Mun
Islands lie east
of Koh Samet,
about five km
from Laem Mae Phim beach. It is
a peaceful and tranquil group of
islands. Koh Mun Islands consists of
three islands, Koh Mun Nai, Koh Mun
Nork and Koh Mun Klang. If you are
eager to do more on Koh Mun islands
than just lie and laze on the beach,
the water is perfect for snorkeling.
Discover cool fish and colorful coral
reefs in the clear water. If you want
to explore more of the island, there
is a canoe to rent at Koh Mun Nork.
At Koh Mun Nai, there is also a turtle
sanctuary where they breed giant
turtles. This sanctuary was founded
by Thailand’s Queen Sirikit.
The Toy Tour has trips to Samet and
other islands off Mae Phim Beach for
exploring. >>
Ekkamai Busstation
By bus you can easily reach Rayong from Bangkok
There are a number of ways to get to
Rayong and nearby towns. Do not be
afraid to try the Thai public transportation.
It’s easy to get around by bus
and it is also cheap! On the buses,
you often get a bottle of water and
something sweet to chew on, included
in the price of the ticket. Traveling
long distances also includes a meal.
It is always a good idea to accept the
drink and snack, as I remember once
that I was not hungry at the beginning
of the trip, but starving by the end of
it. Better to have a drink and snack
handy….just in case.
By Car
Along the highway No 3, Sukhumvit
Rd. or the highway No 34 Bang Na
- Trad, to Rayong. For tourists who
want to go to Koh Samet (Samet
Island), drive for about 19 kms from
Rayong City, turn right at km 238.
Driving for 3 kms, you will find Baan
Phe Market and the Piers.
By Taxi
If you want to travel easily, take a
taxi. From the airport a taxi will cost
you around 2,200 Baht. If you are
traveling from Bangkok, the trip can
be even cheaper, even though it is a
longer distance. There is more competition
and therefore it is possible to
bargain more. A trip from Bangkok to
Rayong should end up at 1800 Baht,
but it depends on how good of a
negotiator you are.
Bangkok: Tel. (066) (02) 3912237
Klaeng: Tel. (066) (038) 674144
To Koh Chang
You can travel both from Klaeng and
Ban Phe. Buses run a couple of times
per hour, 06:00 to 20:00. From Mae
Phim you first have to go to either
Klaeng or Ban Phe.
Mini Van There is also mini-van
transportation. Popular by locals and
very affordable. Often you need to
book in advance to have them to pick
you up. Most hotels and restaurants
know where you can catch a minivan.
Be prepared! The drivers have a
reputation of having “concrete shoes”
or at least on the foot for the gas
pedal! They drive like maniacs simply!
Rent Motorbikes
Mopeds and motorcycles are available
for rent for those who simply want
to get around the area. They cost
is around 300 Baht/day, petrol will
be added. Be sure to use a helmet
because it is required by law. Even
the different traffic flow prevailing in
Thailand is a reason not to skimp on
the helmet, to protect the poor little
cells you use when you think.

Luck usualy works at Lucky’s Saloon in Mae Phim. He chose to go to the temple for 3.5 months for the honor of the family
Monk Ceremony
Most men in Thailand go to monasteries at some point
in their lives. Most go after reaching the age of 20. It
also requires some preparation before going into the
temple. Intense study of the Buddhas teachings happen
daily and there is a ceremony before entering the
Temple. Family and friends are invited to attend the
ceremony. Their hair is shaved and even their
eyebrows are removed. Then the monk then gets his
traditional orange clothes that he wears throughout his
time as a monk.
Why men choose to become monks?
There are many reasons. Becoming a monk is comparable
to our confirmation, to learn more about their
religion. Another strong reason to become a monk is to
do it in honor of his family. Some become monks days
or weeks while others do it for a month or more. The
really serious go “all in” and become a monk for the rest
of their lives.
