<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Azad</strong> <strong>Moopen</strong> is a physician-turned entrepreneur who has combined professional and management<br />
excellence, passionately pursuing healthcare delivery and philanthropic activities, both at home and<br />
abroad. Profit has been, for him, a reasonable means of self-sustenance besides being an instrument for<br />
the care of the less privileged.<br />
He belongs to the illustrious <strong>Moopen</strong> family of Kalpakanchery, Malappuram district of Kerala. His<br />
father, Ahmed Unni <strong>Moopen</strong>, had been a social activist and philanthropist, actively involved in the<br />
freedom struggle during the 1940s. He had instilled in the young <strong>Moopen</strong> a keen sense of social<br />
commitment.<br />
Indelible Impressions<br />
<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Moopen</strong> is the Chairman of <strong>DM</strong> <strong>Healthcare</strong>, which owns and operates the largest healthcare network<br />
in GCC countries with more than 100 units. The Group has around 2000 committed staff in the GCC. <strong>DM</strong><br />
<strong>Healthcare</strong>, which has currently a turnover of more than US$ 150 million, plans for a leap by setting up 12<br />
hospitals, 75 clinics and 175 pharmacies in the GCC countries by 2015.<br />
<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Moopen</strong> has been at the forefront of philanthropic and social initiatives in India and abroad, both<br />
in his personal capacity and as part of his Group’s Corporate Social Responsibility. <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Moopen</strong> has been<br />
firmly committed to his motherland and actively involved in the development of entrepreneurial and<br />
humanitarian initiatives in India. He set up the 600-bed, high tertiary care Malabar Institute of<br />
Medical Sciences (MIMS) hospital (www.mimsindia.com) at Kozhikode in 2001 at a cost of Rs.60 crores.<br />
MIMS brought quality healthcare at affordable cost to the doorsteps of people in North Kerala. MIMS has<br />
opened a satellite unit at Kottakkal in Malappuram. MIMS Hospitals employ about 3,000 people directly.<br />

<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Moopen</strong> has built an organisation with high ethical and moral standards, employing more than 5000<br />
people in India and the Middle East. He has been instrumental in effecting reverse brain drain of healthcare<br />
professionals to India from abroad by providing them with a platform for professional participation by<br />
setting up state-of-the-art hospitals.
He is in the process of setting up the iconic <strong>DM</strong> Medcity at Kochi, the commercial capital of Kerala, with an<br />
investment of Rs.15 billion. The 2500-bed Medcity project spread over 40 acres will function as a hub for<br />
medical tourism, bringing medical tourists from the Middle East, the US and Europe. <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Moopen</strong> intends<br />
to bring internationally renowned healthcare providers to Medcity as strategic partners. The Group has<br />
plans to acquire hospitals in major cities in India as part of its expansion projects in the country.<br />

A true educationalist<br />
<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Moopen</strong> is the Vice Chairman of three International Schools with India’s CBSE syllabus in Riyadh,<br />
Jeddah and Damam in Saudi Arabia with a combined strength of 6000 students, providing quality<br />
education at affordable cost.<br />
As Chairman of MIMS Academy Trust, he set up a 32-acre campus near Kozhikode, which has more<br />
than 1,100 students in various disciplines from certificate to PG courses in various medical subjects.<br />
The Academy proposes to set up a Dental and Medical College soon.<br />
He is also the Executive Trustee of the Global Educational Trust, which is building the Horizon International<br />
School near Kozhikode with an investment of Rs.15 crores for providing international quality education.<br />
<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Moopen</strong> is the Vice Chairman of the Social Advancement Foundation of India (SAFI). This non-profit<br />
organisation is in the process of establishing a Deemed University in 450 acres of land in Malabar to<br />
provide access to students from the backward communities to frontier areas of Technology, Science and<br />
Management.<br />
Naseera and <strong>Moopen</strong> Foundation, his family trust, will be setting up a Human Resource Management<br />
Centre at Kalpakanchery to address the educational backwardness of the area. <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Moopen</strong> is running a<br />
School for the Children for Special Needs at Kalpakancheri for the last five years.<br />
<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Moopen</strong>’s Group and MIMS have<br />

The journey<br />
1982 - Started his career as a lecturer in the General Medicine Department of the Government Medical<br />
College, Kozhikode. He was recognised as one of the brilliant teachers of the period and considered as a<br />
physician with dedication and commitment.<br />
1987 - Started single-doctor practice at Al Rafa Poly Clinic in Bur Dubai, which has now become the most trusted<br />
multi-speciality neighbourhood family clinic in Dubai.<br />
1988 - Established a network of medical centres and pharmacies in the Gulf countries bringing quality health-<br />
care to the doorsteps of millions of expatriates.<br />
2001 - Set up Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) at Kozhikode in association with NRI professionals<br />
and businessmen. MIMS, the leading tertiary care referral hospital in north Kerala, is adding satellite units to it.<br />
One of the satellite hospitals has been functional at Kottakkal in Malappuram.<br />
2002 - Formed <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Moopen</strong>’s <strong>Healthcare</strong> Management Services LLC in Dubai to evolve corporate structure.<br />
2003 - <strong>DM</strong> <strong>Healthcare</strong> extended its operations to other GCC countries and introduced the concept of branded<br />
pharmacies and medical centres, known as MEDSHOP AND MEDCENTRE.<br />
2005 - Started Al Rafa Hospital, a Maternity and Surgical Speciality Hospital, at Mankool, Bur Dubai, UAE.<br />
2006 - Established Euro Health Systems at Dubai <strong>Healthcare</strong> City to provide turnkey consultancy and<br />
management solutions to <strong>Healthcare</strong> Projects.<br />
2007 - Started the reputed MEDCARE Hospital at Jumeirah. It has become a premium healthcare facility<br />
in Dubai.<br />
2008 - <strong>DM</strong> Group expanded its Indian operations by setting up hospitals in Kholapur.<br />

2010 - In consonance with its tremendous growth and ambitious expansion plans, <strong>DM</strong> <strong>Healthcare</strong> has<br />
recently introduced a corporate brand - ‘ASTER’, to bring the large number of establishments under a<br />
common umbrella.<br />
Charity, Generosity<br />
MIMS Charitable Trust under his leadership has been providing free and subsidised medical treatment to<br />
the tune of Rs. 5 million a year to the poor people. The trust established a Rural Health Centre at Vazhayur,<br />
a backward village in Malappuram district in 2008 and adopted 7000 persons below poverty line for<br />
comprehensive free OP and IP care.<br />
Taking into account the increasing incidence of renal disorders and failures, <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Moopen</strong> has decided to set up<br />
community dialysis centres in all the districts in Kerala to provide free and subsidised dialysis for poor patients.<br />
The first centre has been functional at Vadakara in Kozhikode an d many more are coming up in other districts<br />
in Kerala.<br />

<strong>DM</strong> <strong>Healthcare</strong> conducts regular free medical camps in different GCC countries to support the expatriate<br />
community.<br />
<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Moopen</strong> is the founder of MA <strong>Moopen</strong> Memorial School for the Deaf at Kalpakancheri and has been<br />
providing financial support to the institution personally. He and his family donated land and funds to set up<br />
MA <strong>Moopen</strong> Memorial High Tech School and ITI at Kalpakancheri to provide training for boys and girls with an<br />
aim to eradicate unemployment in the area.<br />
He organised the ‘Save the Little Heart’ programme in Dubai in March 2009 to spread awareness and raise<br />
about Rs 65 lakhs for performing cardiac surgery for 60 children from the economically weaker section.<br />
<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Moopen</strong> intends to support rehabilitation of the gulf returnees in the area. An amount of Rs. 1 crore has<br />
been allocated for the project.<br />

His Family<br />
<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Azad</strong> <strong>Moopen</strong> is supported in his efforts by Naseera (wife) and three daughters - Alisha, Ziham and<br />
Zeba and two sons-in-law - Navin Mather and Anoop <strong>Moopen</strong>. He has three grandchildren, Noah, Layah<br />
and Iman. Naseera has been a source of strength for <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Moopen</strong> in all his endeavours, business as well as<br />
charity. His eldest daughter Alisha is a Chartered Accountant, who is working in New Castle (UK) with Ernst &<br />
Young, where her husband Navin Mather is a cardiologist. The second daughter Ziham, who has done Business<br />
Administration degree from the American University, is married to Anoop <strong>Moopen</strong>, a civil engineer, who<br />
also supports the business. His youngest daughter Zeba <strong>Moopen</strong> is doing her MBBS in KMC, Manipal. All the<br />
children have done exceptionally well at studies and believe in the empowerment of women through education.
