Glossary and DefinitionsAccident Fund:Acts:Adjudication:Appeals Tribunal:Appellant:Assessments:Commutation:Compensation:Corporate WCB:Means the fund established under the Workers’ Compensation Actsinto which employer assessments are paid and out of whichcompensation for injured workers and dependants and theadministrative costs of the workers’ compensation system are paid.In Section 3, the Acts mean the Workers’ Compensation Acts of theNorthwest Territories and Nunavut. In Section 4, the Acts meanthe Safety Acts of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.Means the process for making a decision about a stakeholderclaim; in other words, make a judgement.The Appeals Tribunal is the body established under the Acts tomake decisions about appeals by workers, their dependants, oremployers about a decision by a Review Committee (the first levelin the appeals process). There is 1 Appeals Tribunal serving boththe Northwest Territories and Nunavut.An appellant is a worker, a worker’s dependant, or an employerwho disagrees with a decision by the WCB administration andrequests a review of that decision by a Review Committee or theAppeals Tribunal.Assessments are the monies paid by employers to fund theworkers’ compensation system. They are based on the amount ofassessable payroll, the industrial classification of the employer, andthe rate of assessment for that industrial classification.Means paying the dollar value of a permanent pension in one lumpsum instead of paying the pension over time.Compensation means the financial payments, medical treatment,and vocational rehabilitation to which an injured worker or theirdependants are entitled under the Workers’ Compensation Acts ofthe Northwest Territories and Nunavut.The corporate WCB means the corporation called the Workers’Compensation Board, its management and staff, that wasestablished by the Acts.Appendix APage A1 of A4WCB Legislative Review Panel Report December, 2001
