Glossary and DefinitionsAccident Fund:<strong>Act</strong>s:Adjudication:Appeals Tribunal:Appellant:Assessments:Commutation:Compensation:Corporate <strong>WCB</strong>:Means <strong>the</strong> fund established under <strong>the</strong> Workers’ Compensation <strong>Act</strong>sin<strong>to</strong> which employer assessments are paid and out <strong>of</strong> whichcompensation for injured workers and dependants and <strong>the</strong>administrative costs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> workers’ compensation system are paid.In Section 3, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Act</strong>s mean <strong>the</strong> Workers’ Compensation <strong>Act</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Northwest Terri<strong>to</strong>ries and Nunavut. In Section 4, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Act</strong>s mean<strong>the</strong> Safety <strong>Act</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Northwest Terri<strong>to</strong>ries and Nunavut.Means <strong>the</strong> process for making a decision about a stakeholderclaim; in o<strong>the</strong>r words, make a judgement.<strong>The</strong> Appeals Tribunal is <strong>the</strong> body established under <strong>the</strong> <strong>Act</strong>s <strong>to</strong>make decisions about appeals by workers, <strong>the</strong>ir dependants, oremployers about a decision by a <strong>Review</strong> Committee (<strong>the</strong> first levelin <strong>the</strong> appeals process). <strong>The</strong>re is 1 Appeals Tribunal serving both<strong>the</strong> Northwest Terri<strong>to</strong>ries and Nunavut.An appellant is a worker, a worker’s dependant, or an employerwho disagrees with a decision by <strong>the</strong> <strong>WCB</strong> administration andrequests a review <strong>of</strong> that decision by a <strong>Review</strong> Committee or <strong>the</strong>Appeals Tribunal.Assessments are <strong>the</strong> monies paid by employers <strong>to</strong> fund <strong>the</strong>workers’ compensation system. <strong>The</strong>y are based on <strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong>assessable payroll, <strong>the</strong> industrial classification <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> employer, and<strong>the</strong> rate <strong>of</strong> assessment for that industrial classification.Means paying <strong>the</strong> dollar value <strong>of</strong> a permanent pension in one lumpsum instead <strong>of</strong> paying <strong>the</strong> pension over time.Compensation means <strong>the</strong> financial payments, medical treatment,and vocational rehabilitation <strong>to</strong> which an injured worker or <strong>the</strong>irdependants are entitled under <strong>the</strong> Workers’ Compensation <strong>Act</strong>s <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Northwest Terri<strong>to</strong>ries and Nunavut.<strong>The</strong> corporate <strong>WCB</strong> means <strong>the</strong> corporation called <strong>the</strong> Workers’Compensation Board, its management and staff, that wasestablished by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Act</strong>s.Appendix APage A1 <strong>of</strong> A4<strong>WCB</strong> <strong>Legislative</strong> <strong>Review</strong> <strong>Panel</strong> <strong>Report</strong> December, 2001
