The Appalachian Athletic ConferenceThe Appalachian Athletic Conference(AAC) is an ten-member conferencesanctioned by the National Associationof Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).The league has members in Georgia,Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee andVirginia.The AAC participates in DivisionII in men’s and women’s basketballand sponsors six men’s sports and sixwomen’s sports. For men, the conferenceoffers championships in: baseball,basketball, cross country, golf, soccerand tennis. Bristol, Va.Bluefield Tabbed as Preseason Favorite in 2008-09The Union College men’s basketball team was picked to finishfifth this season according to the 2008-09 Appalachian AthleticConference preseason coaches’ poll, released by the conferenceon Oct. 13, 2008.Union garnered 58 points to round out the top 5, five pointsbehind fourth-place Montreat (N.C.) College and three betterthan Tennessee Wesleyan College. The Bulldogs finished the2007-08 conference race in a tie for sixth thanks to an 8-10 conferencerecord. Union posted an overall record of 19-13.Bluefield (Va.) College collected nine of the 10 first-placevotes to earn the pre-season favorite honor with 98 points.Bluefield finished last season as regular-season and tournamentrunner-ups.King (Tenn.) College, the defending AAC regular season andtournament champions, is second with 81 points. The other firstplacevote went to Milligan (Tenn.) College in third. Milliganreceived 78 points after a third-place finish last season.Virginia Intermont College ranks seventh with 41 points.UVa-Wise is two points behind Virginia Intermont. Bryan(Tenn.)
