Assistant Coach Jerry NicholsJerry Nichols is beginning his second season with the Bulldogs.The Memphis, Tenn. native came to Union after serving as an assistantcoach at Walters State (Tenn.) Community College in 2006-07 under headcoach Bill Carlyle, helping guide the Senators to a 21-11 overall record.Nichols played two seasons at Walters State, twice earning All-Conference,All-American and Player of the Year honors. During his final season as aSenator, he helped the team win the State and Region VII championships aswell as earn a berth to the NJCAA National Championship Tournament.After his stint at Walters State, Nichols moved on to play two season atNCAA Division I Arkansas State University. As a junior, he led the team in 3-point baskets with 61 and averaged 9.6 points per game. A native of St.Cloud, Fla., Butler has many ties to Kentucky.He was named as the head athletic trainer in 2006 after serving as an assistantsince 2003.He came to Union the spring semester of 2002. Since that time, he hashelped as a student assistant, providing coverage for all the athletic teams andworked in the training room on campus, while maintaining a 3.5 grade-pointaverage. Butler graduated in May of 2003 with a Bachelor of Science degreein Health Education, becoming his family’s third generation to do so.Prior to coming to Union, he attended the University of Kentucky. He wasa student-athletic trainer for football and baseball the 1999-2000 seasons andmen’s basketball the 2000-2001 season.In addition to working with collegiate athletics Butler has also worked in theNational Football League. He worked as a student intern for two seasons withthe Cincinnati Bengals. The summer of 2002 he was a student intern trainer for the Arizona Cardinals.In 2005, Butler received his certification, having obtain his Master’s from Union.Butler resides in Barbourville and is married to the former Andra Jones.16 • Union College
