Gradus no.18, Clementi seems to have been unnecessarily scrupulous. The subject is<br />

relatively short, and of a kind that will obviously lend itself to inversion—but there is<br />

little to prepare us for the immense amount of work this little motive will do during the<br />

course of the movement. The first three notes in particular are turned on their head,<br />

shortened, lengthened, and made to accompany themselves in a motivically saturated<br />

texture that is almost pointillist in its fragmentation (Ex.5.20):<br />
