LaRue is talking here about two separate but related textural desiderata: 1) the<br />

irregular occurrence of cadential articulations, thus avoiding symmetrical phrase-<br />

lengths; and 2) a tendency for these articulations not to appear simultaneously in all the<br />

different voices simultaneously. The former had been a part of Haydn’s style from the<br />

very beginning; not so the latter. When he turns to fugue, therefore, we shouldn’t be<br />

surprised to see the musical style that still dominated ninety-five percent of his<br />

working life exercising a covert influence.<br />
