Digital Coding <strong>of</strong> Speech Signals<br />

Transmission bit rates in speech coding; waveform coding techniques: PCM, DPCM,<br />

ADPCM, DM, ADM; analysis-synthesis coding techniques: speech production mechanism,<br />

short-time spectral analysis, channel vocoder, format vocoder, LPC vocoder; other coding<br />

techniques: voice-excited vocoder, sub-band coding, adaptive transform coding, adaptive<br />

predictive coding, time-encoded speech.<br />

ELE5431<br />

Advanced Techniques for Video Coding<br />

Introduction: television standards, digital image representation, statistical models, basic lossless<br />

and lossy coding techniques; advanced coding techniques: wavelet coding, synthetic-natural<br />

hybrid coding, postprocessing techniques; image coding standards: JPEG, JPEG2000; video<br />

coding standards: H.261, H.263, MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4; HDTV standard.<br />

Study Scheme<br />

1. Major Programme<br />

A. Applicable to students admitted in 2007-08 and thereafter<br />

Students are required to complete a minimum <strong>of</strong> 76 units <strong>of</strong> Major courses as follows:<br />

(i) Required Courses:<br />

In addition, students are required to take four weeks <strong>of</strong> industrial training in the summer after<br />

their first year <strong>of</strong> attendance.<br />

+ Student can take either SEG2440 or DSE1030 but not both.<br />

Streams <strong>of</strong> Specialization (Notes 3 and 4)<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are five optional streams <strong>of</strong> specialization: Biomedical <strong>Engineering</strong>, DSP and<br />

Multimedia Technology, Integrated Circuit Technology, Microelectronics and Photonics,<br />

and Microwave and Wireless <strong>Engineering</strong>. Students may choose to specialize in one <strong>of</strong> the<br />

five streams and select the courses as prescribed. A student may choose not to specialize in<br />

any <strong>of</strong> the five streams and simply follow the study scheme for S7 entrants, S6 entrants or<br />

Sub-Degree entrants as appropriate.
