Packaging containers with UN approvalWhat is a container with UN approval?The person who fills a package with hazardousmaterials is responsible for its safety ondispatch. In a UN approved container youcan transport hazardous goods safely withouthaving to repack them and thus savecosts.What is “UN-approved”?The UN has drawn up a list of more than6000 hazardous substances classifiedaccording to the risk that they represent;this determines their packaging group.Packaging group I (X) corresponds to a highdegree of risk represented by the contents,e.g. very corrosive substances; packaginggroup II (Y) a medium degree of risk andpackaging group III (Z) less hazardous substances.The UN approval describes the type ofpackaging to be used for the transport ofhazardous substances. The certificate isissued by recognized material testing institutes.In mass production the manufacturermust guarantee that the product meets thespecifications for the type of packaging andthat the packaging is manufactured andtested according to a quality assurance programrecognized and monitored by theregistration office.Test criteria (limits must not be infringed) chemical compatibility temperature flash point < 61 °C drop height pressure (i.e. vapor pressure of the contentsplus partial pressure of any gasesthat may be present) packaging groups I, II, III (density kg/l) shelf life from filling date (if applicable)Approval numbers The identification contains the symbolfor UN-tested packaging, the code for thecontainer material, packaging group,test pressure in kPa, year of manufacture,country of approval, registrationoffice, approval number and manufacturer. If the approval number contains a letter(e.g. F or S) in the position that wouldotherwise be occupied by the test pressurein kPa then the packaging is onlyapproved for use with solids, not withliquids.
