Sharma MD, and staff(Summer, Fall, Winter)This seminar is designed to provide essentialknowledge <strong>of</strong> pharmacology while <strong>the</strong> residents arebeginning <strong>the</strong>ir inpatient rotation. General principles<strong>of</strong> psychopharmacology are discussed alongwith <strong>the</strong> major drug categories. The mechanism <strong>of</strong>action, <strong>the</strong> contraindications and indications, <strong>the</strong>side effects, and practical advice on <strong>the</strong> usage <strong>of</strong>each drug are provided. Residents are also introducedto <strong>the</strong> basic neurosciences in relationship topsychopharmacology.NORMAL DEVELOPMENT AND CHILD/ADOLESCENTPSYCHOPATHOLOGYG. Fox, MD (Fall, Winter, Spring)This course begins by reviewing a variety <strong>of</strong> basicdevelopmental <strong>the</strong>mes: physical, cognitive, attachment,attention, language, temperament, psychosexual,psychosocial, object relation <strong>the</strong>ory, andseparation-individuation. Live and videotaped interviews<strong>of</strong> normal children at various ages are usedto supplement <strong>the</strong> readings. Next, assessmenttechniques and various <strong>the</strong>rapeutic modalities withchildren and adolescents are reviewed. The finalsection reviews psychopathology and surveys <strong>the</strong>major mental and behavioral disorders <strong>of</strong> childhoodand adolescence.PSYCHOPATHOLOGYJ. Anzia, MD (Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring)A series <strong>of</strong> discussions covers <strong>the</strong> major psychiatricsyndromes: schizophrenia, manic depressivedisease, borderline and o<strong>the</strong>r forms <strong>of</strong> characterpathology, organic brain syndromes, alcoholismand drug addictions, and sexual dysfunctions.Residents share responsibility with faculty for presentation,reading assignments, bibliography foreach subject, and use <strong>of</strong> current clinical illustration.A strong emphasis is placed on combining descriptiveand psychodynamic (including developmental)approaches so that <strong>the</strong>oretical concepts <strong>of</strong> disorderedpsychological functioning are addressed.RESEARCH METHODOLOGIESJ. Sweeney, Ph.D. and E. Herbener, Ph.D. (Spring)This seminar provides an introduction to clinical research in its broadest sense. Topics focus on andinclude idea/hypo<strong>the</strong>sis generation through data collection, statistics, and writing and publishing papers.On-going research at <strong>UIC</strong> is reviewed.John Sweeney, Ph.D,Nationally renowned specialistin neurocognitive research,adjusts head position and <strong>the</strong>visual stimulation system usedin an fMRI study. Levey, MD (Winter, Spring)This course reviews, compares, and contrasts <strong>the</strong>major foci <strong>of</strong> psycho<strong>the</strong>rapy and examines <strong>the</strong>basic "curative" elements across <strong>the</strong> psycho<strong>the</strong>rapies.NEUROPSYCHOLOGY AND PSYCHOLOGICALTESTINGNeil Pliskin, PhD (Spring)Introduction to Neuropsychology and <strong>the</strong> indicationsfor psychological testing and interpretation <strong>of</strong>psychological tests. In addition, residents aretaught how to syn<strong>the</strong>size <strong>the</strong> information obtainedfrom psychological testing in arriving at a clinicaldiagnosis.COGNITIVE-BEHAVIOR THERAPYC. The seminarleader encourages a discussion <strong>of</strong> what ishappening in <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>rapy (e.g., transference,countertransference) and what <strong>the</strong>different options are at each <strong>the</strong>rapeuticjunction. She was recently appointed <strong>the</strong>Associate Dean <strong>of</strong> UndergraduateCurriculum at <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Medicine. Shecontinues to teach and supervise residentsand medical students. Klamen attributesmuch <strong>of</strong> her sucess to her training and experiencein <strong>Psychiatry</strong>. “Psychodynamics areeverywhere,” she says. “Understandinggroup dyanmics helps a lot in <strong>the</strong> politicalnegotiation <strong>of</strong> curricular change.”NEUROPSYCHIATRY OF PSYCHOTHERAPYV. Theoretical knowledge andclinical practicum are provided for residents to gaincompetency in <strong>the</strong> utilization <strong>of</strong> hypnosis as atreatment modality.Steven Weine, MD, is a clinician, advocate,researcher and author <strong>of</strong> “When History is aNightmare,” a book on ethnic cleansing inBosnia and elswhere and what it has done tolives and culture. He is <strong>the</strong> director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>International Center on Human Responsesto Social Catastrophes.
