Que OndaA new gallery has opened in the old Fort Bragg Rec Center on Laurel Street. The Art Space is an outgrowth of Big Brothers/Big Sisters’ Que Onda/What’sHappening ? Enrichment Program for middle and high school students. Onsale are mosaics, jewelry, paintings and mixed media pieces created by localstudents who are in this program. Sales are structured just like any art gallery— 50% of the sale goes to the artist, and 50% goes back to the gallery foruse in the program. Staffed by volunteers, the gallery is open on First Fridaysand on Saturdays. Beautiful banners designed and created by the studentswith local artist Janet Self make a distinctive and welcoming entrance to thegallery.Que Onda beganwith a Title II federalgrant to Big Brothers/Big Sisters in 2007. Thegrant was to providelocal youth with afterschool programs as analternative to gang activityor simply to providesomething constructiveto do. The program hasexpanded to include bothin-school and after schoolcreativity programs inart, cooking, and writing.Several hundred studentshave participatedsince its inception, andClaire Fortier in the beautiful Que Onda gallery. Above right:One of the young artists in the enrichment program.Photos by Larry R. Wagner.the group has already held three well-received art exhibits, including two at Saint Michael and All Angel’s Church (whichhas provided free-of-charge studio space for the program sinceits inception) and one at Edgewater Gallery. The opening of a youth art gallery in the old Rec Centeris the realization of a long-held dream. The City of Fort Braggenthusiastically endorsed this move, and the rent is generouslyset at only $100 per month, for the most part covered by“rent angels” (more always needed…). Que Onda also hopesto expand into additional space in the old Rec Center, so thatstudio and gallery space are in one place.Que Onda initially began with a freeform program of arts, crafts, cooking, fun and games and “great snacks,” according toformer program coordinator and Volunteer Gallery CoordinatorKaren McDonell. The idea was to entice kids to come in andhang out on a voluntary basis. Art quickly became a primaryactivity, a great confidence builder for young artists strugglingto identify themselves. Art gave them something self-createdto take pride in and gave them a sense of accomplishment.A number of local artists have assisted with the program, which provides art materials andartistic guidance free of chargeto the students. One of their firstprojects was “Catch A Wave,” apermanent mosaic installation.Among participating local artistsare James Maxwell, Karen Bowers,Dana Ecelberger, Karen Lewis andJanet Self. The involvement of graffitiartist Ben Abel aka “Bones” has given the program an edginessthat greatly appeals to the students, and the influence of the graffitiinstruction can be seen in the artwork at The Art Space. The Mendocino Coast Writers’ Conference is also veryinvolved with Que Onda. Their goal is to encourage students tounderstand the power of words, through writing classes, poetryslams, and introduction to writers such as Luis Rodriguez,a former prisoner and gang member and now a successfulwriter, who addressed the group. With the help of the Writers’Conference, Que Onda hopes to produce a cookbook thatcombines stories with recipes from their Monday afternooncooking class.Que Onda has had a proven positive impact on the lives ofmany of its participants. Stop by their new gallery on FranklinStreet and see what these young artists have created, and contactKaren McDonell, kslatermcd@comcast.net, or Ginny Rorby ofthe Writers’ Conference, grorby@mcn.org, to see how you canhelp. Times are tough and donations are urgently needed.Spring/Summer 2011 33
