Section 3<strong>Emergency</strong><strong>Response</strong><strong>Codes</strong>Responding to <strong>Emergency</strong> orDisaster Situations


Methodist Le Bonheur hasseveral codes you may hear atthe time of an emergency ordisaster situation.These codes will be pagedoverhead within the hospital.Your role, and knowing how torespond, is vital to saving lives.


Dr. RedDr. Red will be announced inthe event of an actual orpotential fire.Dr. Red is discussed more inthe fire safety module.


Dr. ChildDr. Child will be paged when itis suspected that an infant, childor teen has been kidnapped orabducted. The missing personcould be a patient or a visitor.


Upon discovery of a missingchild, you should notify Security.• Adult hospitals - 516-7767• Le Bonheur - 287-6111• Fayette - 911Give the description of the infant,child, or teen and the location ofthe abduction.If known, give a description ofthe suspected abductor.


When a Dr. Child is pagedoverhead you should• Ask anyone in your area with a child toremain on site and in your area until Dr.Child is all clear• Proceed to exterior exits, halls, elevators,and stairs• Look for the child or abductor• Be observant of persons with large bags orboxes• If you see the suspected abductor, delayexit, without force, i.e., ask to look in theirbags• Report any suspicious persons or activity toSecurity


If you are unable to stop thesuspected individual, use theacronym C.O.L.D.Call SecurityObserve activityLocation of the person toSecurityDescribe the activity or person


Dr. RoamA Dr. Roam is a missingperson - child or adult. Thisperson can be either a patientor a visitor.


Upon discovery of a missingperson, notify Security.Adult hospitals - 516-7767Le Bonheur - 287-6111Fayette - 911Give a description of themissing person and the lastknown location


When a Dr. Roam is pagedoverhead you should• Proceed to exterior exits, elevators,and stairs. Remain until Dr. Roam ispaged as all clear• Assign personnel to do a thoroughsearch of the area for the missingperson• Be observant of anyone fitting thedescription• Notify Security if you find the person


A Dr. Strong can beDr. Strong• A situation (hostage situation) in whicha person is unlawfully held in custodyby another• A situation involving physical force orthe threat of violence which requiresintervention by SecurityIf a Dr. Strong occurs call Security• Adult hospitals - 516-7767• Le Bonheur - 287-6111• Fayette - 911


When Notifying Security• Give the location of the incident• Identify all persons involved• Identify any special situation orcircumstances that wouldincrease the danger to patients,visitors, or Associates• Ensure the safety of others inyour area


If Dr. Strong is paged overhead Associatesshould• Be observant for the suspect• Notify Security if you see the suspect• Ensure all Associates are safe in yourarea• NOTE: Dr. Strong is a Securityresponse ONLY and will be pagedoverhead if Security deems itnecessary• Dr. Strong IS NOT utilized for liftinghelp or for assistance to restrain anon-violent person


Dr. Emory House/ Harvey TeamDr. Emory House is the code used in the adulthospitals when a patient/visitor is in cardiacarrestHarvey Team is the code used at Le Bonheurwhen a patient/visitor is in cardiac arrestIf you find a patient/visitor in cardiac arrest,notify the PBX operator and give him/her thelocation of the person


Code Lockdown• Facilities may be locked down inresponse to risk to individualsinside the facility; for example, achemical exposure• All on duty Associates shouldremain on site


Dr. PowerA Dr. Power will be paged if thereis loss of utilities. This includeslighting, communications, water,and heating and air


Associate <strong>Response</strong>to Dr. PowerIf a Dr. Power happens in your area,Associates should• Assist anyone in immediate danger• Notify Facilities Services of theincident


<strong>Response</strong> to Dr. Power(Electrical Failure)• Ensure all critical patient equipmentis plugged into red outlets• Secure emergency kits for flashlights• Move high risk patients close tonursing station• Hand out extra blankets for warmth• Keep patient doors open if feasible


Dr. SpillDr. Spill is a chemical or otherhazardous material spill.General Spills• Follow department specific proceduresand Material Safety Data Sheet(MSDS) guidelines. If small, and spillkit is available, proceed with clean up


For Larger Spills1. Evacuate area2. Pull the fire alarm to close off ventilation3. Notify Facilities Services and Security thatyou have a hazardous spill4. Isolate and protect patients and Associatesby closing doors• Report the spill to CorporateEnvironmental Health and Safety at901-516-0800 or 901-568-9410• It will be determined if a third party vendorwill be required to clean up the spill


Dr. StormDr. Storm will be paged when there is thethreat of severe weather such as atornado.A tornado watch means that weatherconditions are favorable for the formationof a tornado.A tornado warning means that weatherspotters have sighted a tornado orweather radar has indicated a tornado inthe vicinity.


Dr. StormWhen a Dr. Storm is paged overhead, youshould• Close all drapes, blinds on outside windows• Stay away from large areas with outside glass• Move ambulatory patients to interior hallways• Move non-ambulatory patients, if possible, away fromwindows and cover with blankets for protectionagainst flying glass and debris• Be alert for potential power outages• Obtain items from emergency kit as appropriate


Dr. ShakerDr. Shaker will be paged when anearthquake has occurred. Anearthquake is any earth movement orshaking that has enough seismicmagnitude to cause bodily injury ordamage.In the event of an earthquake, therewill be many simultaneous internaldisasters such as structural damage,power loss, water loss, and loss ofcommunication.


Dr. ShakerAssociate response during the shaking• Remain inside• Do not try to exit down stairways• Move away from the windows• Move away from tall shelves and otherobjects that might topple on you• DO NOT STAND IN A DOORWAY


Dr. ShakerAfter the shaking, Associates should• Watch for broken and or spilledchemicals• DO NOT USE ELEVATORS• Check for trapped persons• Check for injuries• Observe basic safety – do not touchelectrical wires, check for fires and tryto extinguish


Dr. ArmsDr. Arms will be paged if there is any actor threat of terrorism. Acts of terrorisminclude involvement of weapons of massdestruction – chemical, biological,radiation, nuclear or explosive (CBRNE).Dr. Arms may require implementation ofour lockdown procedures.


Dr. AbleDr. Able will be announced overhead uponactivation of our Incident Commandsystem due to an internal or externalevent. These events overwhelm oursystem and we have to call on Associateswithin the hospital to assist with the event.There are three stages of Dr. Able


Dr. Able Stage IThis code is not paged outside of the<strong>Emergency</strong> RoomDr. Able Stage I is when the <strong>Emergency</strong>Department can handle the victimscoming in from the disaster


Dr. Able Stage IIDr. Able Stage II will be paged overheadwhen the assistance of all Associateswithin the hospital are required to addressthe event. This would occur when wehave a large influx of patients the<strong>Emergency</strong> Room cannot handleAll <strong>Emergency</strong> Room, Radiology,Surgery, Lab, PBX, Labor and Delivery,Nursery, and Facilities ServicesAssociates’ responsibilities should be toremain in their department


Dr. Able Stage IIThe following departments should send1-2 Associates to the <strong>Emergency</strong>Department•ICU• Respiratory• Pharmacy• Pedi Flight (Le Bonheur)• Environmental Services• Telemetry


Dr. Able Stage IIAll other departments should sendavailable Associates to the LaborPool for assignment.DO NOT GO TO THE EMERGENCYROOM


Dr. Able Stage IIIDr. Able Stage III will be paged when we needall Associates in the hospital to respond, PLUSall Associates to come in from home to helprespond to the event. This would occur if wewere to have a catastrophic disaster in the cityor region.Follow Dr. Able Stage II for reporting.IF YOU COME FROM HOME, REPORT TOTHE LABOR POOL. BRING YOUR ID BADGE


National CodeOrange or Red AlertMLH will implement various security measures ifour nation and/or region is at an increased riskfor terrorist attacks and or activity.Security measures may include• Limited access points into and out of the facility• Checking baggage, purses, etc. upon entry• Limiting or ceasing visitation• Frequent security checks

Handling a TelephoneBomb ThreatWhat to do if you receivethe call


Step 1Remain calm andrelaxed.Do not excite thecaller.


Step 2Use the “Bomb Threat Report” tokeep the caller on the line as longas possible.


Step 3Listen carefully.Focus on what thecaller is saying.Write down asmuch informationas you can.


Step 4Alert Securityas soon aspossible.


Step 5backgroundsounds?caller’svoice?accent?time ofcall?Continue to reflecton the call and writedown any additionalinformation you canrecall.

Never open a package if• You are not familiar with the name andaddress of the sender• The package has no return address• The package contains restrictive markingssuch as confidential, personal, etc• The package has excessive or unusualstamps instead of metered postage• The name, title, or address are incorrect ormisspelled• Its contents appear lumpy or powdery


If you receive a suspiciouspackage or letter, callSecurity immediately.
