Jesse Barge, PGAMaster ProfessionalNow that several companiesare offering adjustable headsI receive more questionsabout Rule 4 Clubs.Once the player has startedthe stipulated round hecannot make adjustmentsto a club he has selectedfor that stipulated round. Rule 4-2a reads "During astipulated round, the playing characteristics of aclub must not be purposely changed by adjustmentor by any other means".The penalty clause for Rule 4-2 is morecomplicated, however. First there is a penalty forcarrying but not making a stroke with a club that hasbeen altered. In match play the penalty is toadjust the state of the match by deducting one holefor each hole where a breach occurred at the conclusionof the hole at which the breach is discovered. The maximum deduction per round is two holes.Rules CornerAdjustable HeadsIn stroke play the penalty is two strokes at each holea breach occurred with a maximum of four strokesper round.Any club carried in breach of the rule must bedeclared out of play by the player to his opponent, marker or fellow competitor immediately upondiscovery of the breach. If the player fails to do so heis disqualified. The penalty for making a stroke with a club that hasbeen altered is disqualification.Returning the club to its original setting does notexempt a player from this rule. Once the adjustmentis made the rule has been breached. If the club head were to come loose in the normalcourse of play the player could use the adjusting toolto tighten the head but the same setting must bemaintained. This is permitted by Rule 4-3ii as longas the repair is done without unduly delaying play.Assistants CornerWe had a great showing at the Assistant’s Pro-Am on April 23 rd at WingHaven Country Club.We had a total of 25 teams, which was up drastically from last year.
