Volume 4, Issue 4 May 2012Josh Riley, PGAExecutive DirectorExecutive Director ReportThe season is certainly off to a fast start. With alot of bad news and negative portrayals aboutthe state of the game, it is refreshing to hearsome positive news from some of our PGAProfessionals, GM’s, and course owners. In the last week,I have talked to two such individuals and discovered thattheir facilities have seen the best first quarter in their history. I have spokenwith several others who came close to their best quarter. I know much successis based on weather; however, it is interesting to hear that these particular facilitiesfeel that they are doing more to engage their current and perspective golfers. To that point, I hope you have had an opportunity to check-in or be part of ourFoundations community growth of the game programs. We had a successfulJunior Play Golf America at Mid-Rivers, we will be hosting a “Welcome toGolf” event on Saturday, May 12 at Crystal Springs Quarry, and we will have a“Women’s Golf Day” at Mid-Rivers on Saturday, June 9th. These programs aregeared to engage, gain, and/or grow the interest in the game of golf. The endgoal is to have golfers looking to you and your facility so that they can take theirnext steps with golf. This Issue100 Holes in One Day P 2‐3Employment P 4Growth of the Game P 5Rules P 6Assistants P 6Fitness P 8Tournaments P 9 ‐ 14Member Updates P 16Golf 2.0 P 17Thank you to all of our PGA Professionals for the great efforts surroundingPGA Golf Marathon. With the advent of a new golf season Ialways took the time to make sure mycareer plan was on track and also if Ineed to make any changes to my goalsand objectives. Career planning is not done just onceduring your career or something that is dreaded andput off, but rather should be an uplifting and rewardingexperience that provides a road map to your future nomatter what your age or current position. Doing thisnow will make you more prepared for making decisionsabout your career now and in the future. Pleaseconsider the following points when planning your careergoals.Make this planning stage an annual event. I recommendthe spring or summer due to the fact thatobviously in our area the movement to new positionsusually occurs in the fall or winter.Take advantage of the content of the Career FitnessManual available on PGALinks in the employmentarea. This document has a wealth of information ifyou are in the job market, transitioning betweenjobs, or evaluating your career.Keep track of your past and present accomplishments. Most people do not do this very well andthen struggle to put them on paper when needed, say in a resume or portfolio for an interview.Set career and job goals. Develop a roadmap foryour job and career success. Can you be successfulin your career without setting goals? Of course. Can you be even more successful through goalsetting? Most research says yes. Set short term andlong term goals and then adjust them as necessaryin your annual review of your plan.Educate yourself! One of the most significantparts of career planning is that information leads topower and success. You can never pass up an opportunityto learn whether it is education from insideor outside of the PGA. Find out what types ofeducation fit with your plan and then seek themout. Do not be a passive learner, but rather go beyondto find new ways and means to educate.Picture yourself in your future. Where do youwant to be in a year or five years from now andEmployment ServicesCareer Planning –What are the necessary steps to consider!what steps do you need totake to get there. Planning tomeet those visions iswhat will make you successful.Keep your career informationup to date andready to go. Look at your resume often and makethe necessary changes to update it. If you needhelp with your resume please contact me and wecan work together to make it a competitive document.Understand your presence on the internet make itwork for you. Are you part of LinkedIn, Facebook,and/or do you have your own professionalweb site? Our industry is still paper resume driven, but having a professional presence on the internetcan also be helpful. Are you planning for your economic future?Whether you are just starting in the business or justa few years from retirement have you worked witha professional to make sure your economic goalsare being formulated and met?Make sure you are building your networking influenceinside and outside of our industry. Networkingcan be an important part of your future so giveit the necessary attention it deserves. Networkingalso includes getting involved with your Associationeither locally or nationally. The more youbecome “known” the better off you may be in thefuture. Working with groups such as the Boys andGirls Clubs, Special Olympics, and other organizationsnot only help you make a name for yourself, but also helps to spread the word about golf andthe PGA Member! These are just a few items to consider when puttingtogether a plan for your present and future career. Ifyou need additional help please do not hesitate to contacteither myself or Craig Liddle (Gateway SectionEmployment Chairperson – at 636-227-9962 or cliddle@meabrk.org).I hope that you have a terrific 2012 season!Tim Marks, PGAEmployment Consultant815-630-5196tmarks@pgahq.comGateway Section | 17269 Wild Horse Creek Rd, Ste 110 | Chesterfield, MO 63005-1360 | gateway@pgahq.com | www.gatewaypga.org4

Jesse Barge, PGAMaster ProfessionalNow that several companiesare offering adjustable headsI receive more questionsabout Rule 4 Clubs.Once the player has startedthe stipulated round hecannot make adjustmentsto a club he has selectedfor that stipulated round. Rule 4-2a reads "During astipulated round, the playing characteristics of aclub must not be purposely changed by adjustmentor by any other means".The penalty clause for Rule 4-2 is morecomplicated, however. First there is a penalty forcarrying but not making a stroke with a club that hasbeen altered. In match play the penalty is toadjust the state of the match by deducting one holefor each hole where a breach occurred at the conclusionof the hole at which the breach is discovered. The maximum deduction per round is two holes.Rules CornerAdjustable HeadsIn stroke play the penalty is two strokes at each holea breach occurred with a maximum of four strokesper round.Any club carried in breach of the rule must bedeclared out of play by the player to his opponent, marker or fellow competitor immediately upondiscovery of the breach. If the player fails to do so heis disqualified. The penalty for making a stroke with a club that hasbeen altered is disqualification.Returning the club to its original setting does notexempt a player from this rule. Once the adjustmentis made the rule has been breached. If the club head were to come loose in the normalcourse of play the player could use the adjusting toolto tighten the head but the same setting must bemaintained. This is permitted by Rule 4-3ii as longas the repair is done without unduly delaying play.Assistants CornerWe had a great showing at the Assistant’s Pro-Am on April 23 rd at WingHaven Country Club.We had a total of 25 teams, which was up drastically from last year. The Assistant’s Committeewould like to thank the staff at WingHaven Country Club for everything they did to make theevent so successful, all the vendors that made the demo day an added bonus to our members andguest and most importantly we would like to thank everyone that played. We were able to raisemore money through the silent auction and through the event that will go towards the purse. Also,if you have not done so already you may pick up your raffle tickets now from Steve Finn at thesection office!Ty ZimmermanAssistants Championship site has been selected!! Brought To You by Optimal Lifestyles, Inc.Golf requires a certain level of energy, but it’sdifficult to maintain energy throughout theday. The problem is compounded when you’replanning an after-work golf game (ever feelthat 3 p.m. energy slump?). With minimaltweaking to your daily routines, however, you’ll be able to both work hard and play hard.Keep your energy flowing by following thesesimple, but effective tips:* Sweet Dreams – Call it a day at a reasonablehour and get a good night’s sleep. Resist thatnext cup of coffee or caffeinated soda duringthe day if it keeps you awake.* Fuel Up at Breakfast – Going withoutbreakfast is like pulling out of the garage withno gas in your car. Oatmeal with fresh fruit is agood choice, or whole-grain bread with peanutbutter and banana.* Stay Hydrated – Although this is difficult toremember when you’re busy at work, drinkingplenty of water during the day is essential. Ifyou feel that afternoon slump coming on, itcould be dehydration setting in, which affectsmental alertness, as well as energy levels. Youalready know drinking liquids during a golfgame is smart – make it a daylong habit.* Avoid Large Meals – Try eating smallermeals and snacks four to six times a day, ratherthan the typical three large meals. Eatingthroughout the day helps maintain more consistentenergy levels. Have energy-rich snackson hand such as bananas, apples, grapes, carrots, celery sticks or whole grain crackers withpeanut butter or cheese.* Keep Moving – Get up from your desk andmove around during the day. Take a walkdown the hall (or better yet, up and down thestairs). A short break can recharge your batteriesand leave you feeling refreshed by the timeyou return to the tasks at hand.* Take a Stretch Break – Whether you canget up and walk around or not, it is helpful totake a stretch break. Stretch both sides of yourbody, do some seated cat/dog movements, move your neck from side to side and do lightside twisting. These movements get bloodflowing, which sends energy throughout yourbody. Be cognizant of your posture, too. Situp tall, starting with your tailbone and movingup your back.* Clear Your Mind – Every now and then, take a couple of minutes or more to clear yourmind: Assume a comfortable position; closeyour eyes; focus on your breathing; breathe inand out of your nose (if possible) slow, longbreaths. If any thoughts come in let them flowthrough and come back to your breathing. Justlike in golf, this mental exercise helps you focusand stay in the present moment.* Avoid the Vending Machine – When youfall into an afternoon slump, indulge in freshfruit, or better yet, peanut butter or cheese on awhole grain cracker or roll. Stay away fromthe vending machine that may be filled withoverly salty or sweet snacks.Following these eight simple tips, you shouldfeel more energized for those late afternoonrounds of golf. TOURNAMENT UPDATESAt the end of each tournament season we send out the annual tournament survey to get your feedback on theGateway PGA Tournament Program. Each year we receive several responses of why people can’t participate andthe top reasons are consistently family obligations and work schedule. Unfortunately, those are out of our controlwhen it comes to creating more participation at our events. We did receive comments last year that if we offeredtournaments on a day other than Monday some individuals would be more likely to get out and participate. This year the Tournament Committee has added a ‘Thursday Game Series’. So far we have two dates scheduledwith a third still in the works. The first event was scheduled on April 26 at The Golf Club of Pevely Farms. Unfortunately,we did not garner enough participation so this event was canceled. We will try again on May 17 atGateway National Golf Links. These 18-hole individual stroke play events will use tee time blocks in the earlymorning and early afternoon for schedule convenience. Individuals who choose to play in the morning will simplyturn their scorecard into the Golf Shop and the scoring and results will be finalized after the afternoon wave hasfinished play. The entry fee for these events will be $40 cash, half of our usual Pro-Open entry fees. If you choose toride you will also be responsible for paying the facility cart fee as well. The events will be administered by amember of the Tournament Committee to eliminate administrative fees and keep the entry fee dollars in the purse.A big thank you to our host professionals for opening up their tee sheets for these events. I hope this will give moresection members and apprentices the opportunity to get out and compete, network and socialize with their peers. Asalways, I am available for questions about our tournament program. I know myself and the rest of the TournamentCommittee is glad competition has begun! Congrats to Bob Gaus for taking the first major of the 2012 season atAnnbriar. I look forward to seeing everyone this season on the links.Brett Moomey, PGAGateway PGA Tournament ChairmanAnnual Gateway Cup Matches RecapThe Gateway PGA and Metropolitan AmateurGolf Association squared off at Old HickoryCC for the Annual Gateway Cup Matches onApril 1-2nd.
