Blaukorn® Quick Release FertiliserFOR USE ON ALL COARSE TURF AREAS INCLUDING RACECOURSES, SPORTS PITCHES, GOLF COURSE FAIRWAYS AND ROUGHMultiverdo MiniprillMULTIVERDO 13-0-46 MINI-PRILLED POTASSIUM NITRATE, IDEALLY SUITED FOR PROMOTING GROWTH AT LOW SOIL TEMPERATURES,RECOVERY AFTER AERATION AND FOR USE IN ANAEROBIC SOIL SITUATIONSBlaukorn Key Points• Quick release outfield fertiliser• Homogeneous fertiliser for even response• Low rates mean cost effective application• Rapidly available nitrogen works at low soil temperaturesBlaukorn 24-5-5+2MgO+5S+Micronutrients Key Points• High nitrogen analysis• Immediately available ammonium and nitrate nitrogen• Low application rate• Cost-effective formulationPNMg K SMicronutrientsBlaukorn GranuleHow Blaukorn worksEach homogeneous Blaukorn granule contains allof the nutrients declared in the analysis ensuringeven distribution after application. With no carrierand a highly-water soluble phosphorus content,Blaukorn breaks down quickly once it comes intocontact with moisture.Blaukorn contains ammonium and nitrate, the twomost available nitrogen forms for fast response atlow soil temperatures. The potassium utilised inBlaukorn is potassium sulphate, which has a muchlower salt index and therefore scorch risk than otherforms of potassium, such as potassium chloride.Blaukorn 15-3-20+2MgO+10S+Micronutrients Key Points• High potassium analysis for spring or autumn usage• Immediately available ammonium and nitrate nitrogen• Potassium sulphate for enhanced turf safety• Cost effective formulationHigh analysis – low application rate flexibilityBlaukorn 24-5-5 can be applied as low as 20g/m 2 and this still offers 48kg ofnitrogen per hectare, - the equivalent to applying a traditional 9-7-7 analysisat over 50g/m 2 . A lower application rate means fewer bags applied perhectare, involving less storage, transportation and manpower.Optimum granule characteristicsThe granulation of Blaukorn has been refined, compared to the originalNitrophoska product and now 90% of the granules are between 2.0 – 4.0mm,with the average granule size range between 2.8 and 3.4mm. This providesoptimum spreading characteristics whether applied through a pedestrian ortractor-mounted spreader. Granule breakdown is also exceptionally fast due tothe use of more highly soluble raw materials. As an added benefit, the granulesare dyed blue to increase visibility during application.Optimum nutrient packageBoth Blaukorn analyses feature immediately available ammonium and nitratenitrogen, derived from ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulphate, to ensurea fast turf response even during cool spring and autumn temperatures. Thephosphorus content is derived from phosphoric acid for quicker availability tothe grass plant and the potassium from sulphate of potash for maximum turfsafety. Blaukorn products also feature the important secondary plant nutrients- sulphur and magnesium as well as micronutrients, boron, iron and zinc.Low salt indexMany outfield fertilisers utilise potassium chloride as their potassium source, but although cheaper, this has a higher scorch risk to the grass plant. Scorchrisk is measured by the salt index of the fertiliser, - the higher the salt index, thehigher the scorch risk. Potassium chloride has a salt index of 116, whereaspotassium sulphate (the form used in Blaukorn) has a salt index of only 46 Inpractice this can be up to 60% safer to the grass plant.Blaukorn quick release fertiliser for use on golf tees, approaches, fairways, sports pitches, racecourses and general amenity turfEasy application with minimal disruptionThe easy to see, white micro-prills make application extremely straightforwardand once applied, they quickly dissolve, eliminating pick up problems. Why Multiverdo Miniprill is beneficial forBlack LayerThe high oxygen and low sulphur content ofMultiverdo Miniprill make it ideally suited foruse in anaerobic conditions where soiloxygen levels are deficient. These conditionsusually occur when a rootzone becomeswaterlogged due to poor drainage, incompatiblesoil physical characteristics and/oraccumulations of organic matter. When thisoccurs, oxygen is unable to move freelythrough the soil profile (Note–oxygenmoves through water at only 1/10,000th of the rate it moves through air) andeventually the grass plant experiences a lack of oxygen known as hypoxia.Hypoxic stress is a growing feature of golf turf as our changing climate featuresheavy rainfall over short periods of time, severely testing the physical propertiesof rootzones. At the same time, the microbial balance in the soil shifts awayfrom organisms that respire oxygen to those that use nitrate and/or sulphur(so called sulphur-respiring bacteria) leading to soil denitrification and theproduction of toxic hydrogen sulphide gas. To correct anaerobic conditionsand hypoxic stress, a number of measures can be undertaken including;• The addition of nitrate nitrogen to counteract the process ofdenitrification• The addition of oxygen to raise the redox status of the soil andcounteract Hypoxia• A reduction in sulphur input to deter sulphur-respiring soil bacteriaThe use of Multiverdo Miniprill as part of an overall strategy can help to meetthe above requirements by providing chemical oxygen without additionalsulphur as part of the fertiliser program.Multiverdo Miniprill 13-0-46 Key Points• 100% potassium nitrate – no carrier• Easy to see during application• Nitrate nitrogen for immediate plant availability with no sulphur• Ideally suited for use in black-layer situations• Micro-prilled formulation for ease of application and quickdispersal into the sward• Low application rates for cost-effective useMultiverdo PrillHow Multiverdo worksEach homogeneous Multiverdo prill containsstraight potassium nitrate with no carrier andsolubilises quickly on contact with moisture. Thewhite prill is easy to see when applying and theMiniprill formulation ensures adequate coverage, even at low application rates. Once solubilised,Multiverdo breaks down into nitrate nitrogen andpotassium ions, without requirement for bacterialconversion in the soil and is therefore immediatelyavailable to the grass plant.Multiverdo quick release fertiliser for use on golf & bowling greens, golf tees, approaches, fairways, sports pitches, racecoursesand general amenity turfProduct NameLighyBlaukorn 24-5-5+2MgOBlaukorn 15-3-20+2MgOField Longevity6-8 weeks6-8 weeksGranulationSGN310SGN310Cutting Height>=10mm>=10mmApplication Pack SizeRate20 – 35g/m 225kg20 – 35g/m 2 25kgBag Coverage(Per Hectare)8 – 14 bags8 – 14 bagsProduct NameLighyMultiverdo 13-0-46Field Longevity6-8 weekGranulationSGN120Cutting HeightFine TurfApplicationPack SizeRate10 – 35g/m 225kgBag Coverage(Per Hectare)4 – 14 bagsUsage PeriodJan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov DecUsage PeriodJan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov DecLighyBlaukorn 24-5-5+2MgOBlaukorn 15-3-20+2MgOLighyMultiverdo 13-0-4610 | Headland Amenity Headland Amenity |11

C-Complex - Organic Mineral FertilisersC-Complex - Formulated for AerationFOR USE ON FINE TURF, GOLF AND BOWLING GREENS, TEES, APPROACHES AND SURROUNDSFOR USE ON FINE TURF, GOLF AND BOWLING GREENS, TEES, APPROACHES AND SURROUNDSNMgHumic AcidOrganic BasePCaKMicronutrientsC-Complex GranuleSHow C-Complex worksC-Complex is an organic mineral fertiliser formulated on an aerobically composted, cow manure base enriched with humic acids. This helps to stimulate soilmicrobial activity whilst enhancing root development and stress suppression.A cold processed seaweed extract is also used within the formulation. Amicronutrient package is added to C-Complex to ensure a complete range ofprimary, secondary and micronutrients are available to the plant. Granulationis optimised for quick granule breakdown on the turf surface, without the normaltackiness associated with based on poultry manure. Odour levels are minimal.C-Complex not only contains humic acid and aerobically composted cow manure, but to provide a complete package, it also contains cold-temperature processedseaweed extract as well as balanced primary, secondary and micronutrients.Unique granule characteristics – Fast breakdown for fast responseC-Complex utilises ‘soft granule’ technology which allows faster breakdownwhen in contact with moisture, without the tacky inter-phase typical of poultrymanure based fertilisers. The result is minimal mower pick up and faster plantavailability of nutrients, assuring a rapid response.High humic acid contentMost poultry based organic fertilisers only contain trace levels of humic acid, typically in the region of 0.25–0.50%. C-Complex 4-3-4 contains 9.0% humicacid for encouragement of root and shoot development.Fully composted organic base = no nitrogen drawdownNon or only partly composted organic fertilisers rely on microbial activity tocomplete the process, utilising nitrogen from the rootzone to achieve this. In sodoing, they deprive the plant of this important nutrient. C-Complex has a fullycomposted organic base that does not adversely affect nitrogen availability tothe plant.C-Complex 7-0-7 +3CaO+2MgO Key Points• Balanced NK analysis• Ammonium nitrogen for lowtemperature release• Urea and organic nitrogen forenhanced safety• Composted cow manure base• Cold processed seaweed content• High humic acid content – 6.7%C-Complex 7-0-7+3CaO+2MgOExcellent low temperature nitrogen response – ideal as a spring starterC-Complex 7-0-7 contains both nitrate and ammoniacal nitrogen for excellentavailability in cool temperatures. This is combined with urea and organic nitrogenproviding gentle, extended release. Dealing with nematode stressINFORMATIONSeamac Ultra Plus - Bioactive Seaweed + Amino AcidsINTENSIVELY MANAGED TURF IS HIGHLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO STRESS, ESPECIALLY IN OUR EVER CHANGING AND OFTEN EXTREME NORTHERN CLIMATEFOR USE IN ALL FINE AND COARSE TURF SITUATIONS INCLUDING GOLF AND BOWLING GREENS, TEES, FAIRWAYS, SPORTS PITCHES AND RACECOURSESPathogenic nematodes have become a real issue in the European turf industrysince the first symptoms of turf damage by plant parasitic nematodes (PPN’s)Seamac Ultra Plus Key Pointswere noted in 1997 by Mark Hunt, Technical Director of Headland Amenity. The cause was subsequently identified by Kate Entwistle (The Turf DiseaseCentre) and confirmed by research undertaken by Colin Fleming (Queen’sUniversity, Belfast). The culprit was Meloidogyne minor, a new species of rootknotnematode that primarily infected creeping bentgrass greens and perennialryegrass sports pitches. Over the last 5-10 years, numerous other types of PPN’shave been discovered in the UK and Europe, affecting both established andnew rootzone turf. Among them, Root Gall (Subanguina radicicola), Cyst(Heterodera spp.), Spiral (Helicotylenchus spp.) and Stunt (Tylenchorhynchusspp.) nematodes have proved the most destructive. The activity of the nematodeis mainly focussed on the root system. Whether the organism is an endoparasiticspecies (living within the root), like the Root-Knot nematode (Fig.1) or anectoparasitic species (living outside of the root), like the Spiral nematode (Fig.2), thenet effect is that the normal function of the root is compromised.Stress managementPlant parasitic nematodes reduce the efficacy of the root system in terms ofnutrient and water uptake, but there are often no visible symptoms. Typically, symptoms of nematode damage are absent until the grass plant suffers someform of stress. For example;1. Environmental Stress - Drought, high evapotranspiration (E.T), low light levels, poor growing conditions.2. Cultural - Reduced cutting height, heavy verticutting / Graden usage, incorrect roller usage3. Nutrient - Insufficient or excessive nitrogen fertility regime4. Pathogen complex – The grass plant is already weakened by the action of apathogenic fungus.Pre-stress conditioning – maximising plant health prior to stressFor many years, seaweed biostimulants have been utilised on turf, but it wasn’tuntil recently that research identified the exact, beneficial mechanism of thesematerials on the grass plant. It is now known that an application of the correcttype and quantity of biostimulant, stimulates production of antioxidants whichFig 1 - Endoparasitic Root-Knot nematodesinside a Creeping Bentgrass root.Fig 2 - Ectoparasitic Spiral nematodesattacking a Perennial Ryegrass root.in turn decrease free radical activity, minimising damage to the plant cells. Useof biostimulants can be beneficial in managing plant stress symptoms and inparticular nematode stress. Research has highlighted a synergism between theuse of cold temperature extract seaweeds and the correct input level of humicacid. Headland Amenity have used these research findings as the basis for theirbiostimulant - Turfcomplex (featured on page 24) and suggest applying thisproduct in combination with TriCure AD soil surfactant on a monthly basis, beginning in March.Post nematode damage –Managing a grass sward showing nematode damageIf a plant is already damaged by stress, there is a need to try to stimulate recoveryof new root and shoot tissue. As with pre-stress conditioning, there are a numberof materials that help achieve this, either by providing the building blocks ofplant growth, ( the case with amino acids), or by stimulating the plant’s naturaldefence mechanism (SAR) using plant elicitors such as Harpin or Phosphite. Toachieve recovery from stress it is important that along with applications of suchmaterials, the correct cultural processes are adopted to increase the plant’srecuperative ability. Both these areas are dealt with in depth in the technicalarticle available from Headland Amenity – ‘Dealing with Nematode Stress’.Typical turf damage by pathogenic nematodesThe bioactive seaweed extract is processed soon after harvesting to maintainthe natural goodness present and independent tests have shown it is especiallyhigh in gibberellic acid – a known plant growth hormone.Amino acid contentThe benefits of using seaweed extracts as foliar and root drench applications arewell established on sports turf, but with Seamac Ultra Plus, the formulationis greatly enhanced by the presence of plant available amino acids.Amino acids are involved in numerous functions that facilitate healthy plantgrowth including shoot and root development, nitrogen transfer within the plant, chlorophyll production and protection against pathogens to name but a few.Enhanced growth in stress situationsWhen a plant is growing normally, it uses energy produced during the photosyntheticprocess to produce amino acids. However, when it is under stress, theefficiency of this process can be severely reduced leading to a decrease in theamount of amino acids produced.Application of amino acids from an external source, (e.g. Seamac Ultra Plus) whena plant is under stress, stimulates growth and recovery. Fundamental buildingblocks necessary to facilitate growth are provided, with no need for the plant toexpend energy that is already in short supply.Foliar application of amino acidsPlants are able to absorb amino acids through the leaves. However if themolecular weight of the amino acid is too great (>400 Daltons), this process isinefficient. The average molecular weight of the amino acids present inSeamac Ultra Plus is 130 Daltons and this allows them to be absorbed in a fewhours, penetrating the cell membrane and rapidly becoming incorporated inthe metabolic routes of protein synthesis. Foliar application is especially effectivein stimulating chlorophyll production when the plant is under stress as the plantcan struggle to manufacture amino acids of its own.Root application of amino acidsThe low molecular weight of the amino acids in Seamac Ultra Plus, are alsocapable of absorption by plant roots.• Liquid seaweed with plant essential amino acids• Cold extracted seaweed provides high levels ofbioactive plant growth hormones• Improves stress resistance in turf and aids recovery• Increases photosynthesis and growth response• Enhances root development in stressed areas• Tank-mixable with other Headland productsSuggested Pre-stress treatment (also see pages 24, 42 and 43)Product NameLighyTurfcomplexTricure ADApplication TypeBiostimulantSoil PenetrantApplication Rate20 – 40L/ha7 – 14L/haSuggested Post-stress treatment (also see pages 23,and 27)Product NameApplication Type Application RateLighySeamac Ultra PlusBiostimulant10L/haTurfitePlant Elicitor30L/haTeMag HPEPlant Elicitor6Kg/haWater Volume300 - 600L/ha300 - 600L/haWater Volume300 - 450L/ha300 - 450L/ha300 - 450L/haSupplementaryIrrigationIrrigate tankmix offleaf into rootzoneSupplementaryIrrigationLeave tankmixon leafPackSize10L & 100L10L & 100LPackSize10L & 100L10L & 100L6KgFilterRecommendation30# Mesh30# MeshFilterRecommendation30# Mesh30# Mesh30# MeshApplied as a soil drench they stimulate the activity of micro organisms andincrease the efficiency of nitrogen transfer through the plant.Root development is specifically stimulated by the presence of Arginine - akey amino acid involved in root formation.Product NameLighySeamac Ultra PlusSeamac Ultra PlusUsage PeriodLighySeamac Ultra PlusApplication TypeFoliarRoot DrenchApplication Rate10L/ha10L/haWater Volume200 - 400L/ha450 - 600L/haSupplementaryIrrigationPackSizeNot Required 10L & 100LIrrigate to moveproduct into rootzone10L & 100LFilterRecommendation30# Mesh30# MeshJan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec22 | Headland Amenity Headland Amenity |23

When a plant is under stress, toxic molecules known as free radicalscan be produced, which if left to accumulate, damage plant pigment productioncausing bleaching and cell membrane damage. Research has shown thatapplication of a bioactive seaweed in combination with humic acid can stimulatethe plant to produce antioxidants that prevent the accumulation of freeradicals by reacting with them to produce non-harmful compounds.High humic acid contentTurfcomplex contains high levels of humic and fulvic acids in order to promoteroot growth and reduce plant stress. At 40 litres per hectare, Turfcomplexapplies the research identifed optimum rate of 1.75kg / Ha of Humic Acid.Elevated manganese content for enhanced root strength anddisease suppressionManganese availability has been linked with anumber of turfgrass diseases, notably Take-AllPatch and latterly Grey Leaf Spot. These diseasesare thought to convert manganese to a form thatis unavailable to the plant and in so doing, increase the plant’s susceptibility to disease.Manganese is linked to lignin biosynthesis andtherefore low levels in the root may limit rootlignin content and thereby increase the plantssusceptibility to root diseases, like Take-All. Turfcomplex is formulated to apply0.47kg / Mn / Ha @ 20L / Ha.Fully chelated micronutrient packageTurfcomplex contains a full spectrum of micronutrients in EDTA chelatedform to maximise availability in alkaline rootzones. This change brings both positives and negatives toturf management with a longer playing season, but more aggressive autumndisease activity, Fusarium in particular. The image on the right shows warmair distribution over Europe in late October 2009, caused by a weatherphenomenon known as a ‘Blocking Event’, that affects the shape of the jet stream. This weather pattern was also repeated in the 1st week of November 2010.Weather conditions like these have made it harder to manage Fusariumbecause of the increased speed and intensity of disease attack.Maximising Plant HealthIn order to counter this increase in Fusarium activity, without relying solely onrepeated fungicide applications, Headland Amenity have pioneered anagronomic approach to disease management. This approach is based onincreased plant health and utilises preventative applications of the aboveplant elicitors and plant hardeners, applied prior to the main disease period. In addition to positive field feedback from end-users, the efficacy of this strategyis backed up by data from independent trials, conducted at the Sports TurfResearch Institute.S.T.R.I Trial DataTrials conducted over 2009/2010 showed significant disease reduction byutilising a tankmix combination of;20kg Solufeed NK 15-0-25 + 20L Turfite + 20L Liquid Turf Hardener + 30LSeamac Proturf in 400L water per hectare. Disease managementINFORMATIONThrottleCOMBATING FUSARIUM OVER THE AUTUMN AND WINTERTHROTTLE HAS BEEN SPECIFICALLY DEVELOPED TO PROVIDE ULTIMATE CONTROL OF FUSARIUM PATCH IN ALL MANAGED TURF AREASFusariumA strategy to manage Fusarium should not bebased on fungicide alone as the severity andimpact of this disease is also affected by thehealth of the grass plant, its level of nutrition, cultural practices and the presence of plantleaf moisture (dew and guttation fluid).Headland Amenity has pioneered a multi-layered,straight-forward and above all, cost-effectiveapproach to Fusarium management usingtargeted applications of preventative fungicidein combination with plant elicitors. Thisapproach is based on end-user feedback, backed up by independent data from trialsconducted at the Sports Turf Research Institute.Disease development pattern &fungicide timingTo prevent Fusarium establishing in theautumn and being a recurring issue thereafter,it is critical to control the initial establishmentphase of the disease. This typically takesplace in the U.K during early October andextends to mid November as shown in thegraph (top right). In Ireland, this process starts3-4 weeks earlier.Temperature in o c% Microdochium Nivale infection in plotIt is during this period that the disease has the potential to establish a highpopulation and if allowed to do so, achieving control through fungicide use isboth difficult and expensive.Disease activity can commence at any point in the autumn calendar. In 2008for example, after the extremely wet August, disease kicked off during thatmonth and remained throughout the autumn. Ordinarily Headland Amenityhas noted aggressive, potentially scarring activity to take place from thebeginning of October onwards as the graph shows in autumn 2009. This usuallycoincides with high night temperatures and / or heavy dews and so it isimportant to apply prior to this period.20100%Fusarium RiskSoil Temperature15Air Temperature 75%10525%0Sept 09 Oct 09 Nov 09 Dec 09-5-10Target preventative fungicide applications here35302520151050Sept 2008 Oct 2008 Nov 2008 Dec 2008 Jan 2009Treatment and Application Rate (per hectare) Application Dates - 8th Sept & 13th OctUntreated Control Throttle @ 1.7 litres Throttle @ 1.7 litres + TeMag HPE @ 6KgHeadland Amenity would suggest the following timing for the Throttle +TeMag HPE combination;Mid- Late September1st applicationMid – Late October2nd applicationIf soil temperatures are below 12ºC at the time of the 2nd application,Headland Amenity suggest adding half rate iprodione with the Throttle andTemag HPE tankmix.S.T.R.I trial data (see graph above)Fusarium trials conducted over the autumn / winter 2008/9 showed a significantbenefit in disease suppression by utilising the tankmix combination ofThrottle and TeMag HPE..50%Winter use of ThrottleThrottle combines two highly active fungicides, each with a different mode ofaction – Prochloraz, a translaminar, and Tebuconazole, a systemic. Togetherthey provide a high level of disease control in all types of established turf.Stand-alone treatments of Throttle have proven to be successful even underthe cool conditions of late autumn and early spring. Where growth is limitedby temperature, a systemic/contact mix featuring iprodione with Throttle canbe used on a 3-4 week interval.Where to useThrottle is approved for use on managed amenity turf including sports-turfsuch as golf greens and tees, bowling greens and sports pitches, as well aslawns (in commercial and residential situations). Apply Throttle to establishedturf only. When to useApply Throttle as soon as disease symptoms appear, or in the early stages ofdisease development. Alternatively, preventative application may be madebefore the onset of disease. Repeat once if necessary with an interval of atleast 14 days.Do not apply when the turf is under stress such as drought, waterlogging orextremes of hot or cold temperatures. How to useThrottle can be applied using standard powered spray equipment or pedestrianwalkover type equipment. Half fill the spray tank with clean water add therequired quantity of Throttle and begin agitation. Add the remainder of thewater. Maintain agitation during spraying. Always apply after cutting and donot mow for at least 24 hours.Systemic fungicide choiceWhere turf is rapidly growing and being mowed, duration of protection maybe affected where leaf penetrant only fungicides are used.Throttle is an ideal choice of product under these conditions as part of theformulation can be taken into the plant via its roots and moves upwardly torapidly protect from within. This provides longevity of effect even whenclippings are removed by mowing. It is important to rotate different active ingredients to minimise the risk ofresistance building up within the target organism. It is not advisable to reducethe rate of systemic fungicides as part of a systemic / contact tankmix, as thismay increase the risk of resistance to that active ingredient and will also shortenthe longevity of protection.Throttle Key Points• Liquid formulation for efficient curative orpreventative control of Fusarium Patch• Provides outstanding results if applied before,or at the early stages of disease establishment• Tankmixable with contact fungicides forefficient, long term control• User experience has shown good control ofRed Thread disease• Throttle contains 267 g/l Prochloraz and133 g/lTebuconazole• User-friendly 0.85L, half ha packTHROTTLE APPLICATION RATEProductLighyThrottleTypeLighyArea ofActivityTiming oftreatmentMAPP No. 13900.Application Rate (litres/ha)Use1.7Stops sporegerminationpreventing infectionApply beforesymptoms andperiods of highdisease riskCurativeStops diseasedevelopmentin plantApply whensymptoms areevidentAlways read the label. It controlsboth grasses and broad-leaved weeds. The product produces discolourationand browning of the foliage within a few hours of treatment and during warmsunny weather most plants die within 1-2 days. The product can be used yearround. Perennial weeds generally require more than one application to controlbut annual weeds are usually controlled with one treatment.Areas of useNatural Weed Spray can be used to control weed growth in amenity situationssuch as footpaths and pavements, parks, around trees, shrubs and hedges andin industrial areas such as railways, industrial sites and fence lines etc. It isapproved for moss control on hard surfaces such as footpaths and tenniscourts. Unlike other moss killers for hard surfaces, Natural Weed Spray No1 will alsocontrol weeds and grass as well, eliminating the need for a separate application.ApplicationApply the spray so that leaves and stems are fully wetted before run-off. As theproduct works by contact action it is important that the weed is fully coveredotherwise there will be partial control. The product is not translocated withinthe plant and therefore is safer to use around trees, shrubs and other valuableplants. Repeat treatment as required.MixingMix 1 part Natural Weed Spray to 3 parts of clean water. For example in a 16litre knapsack sprayer mix 4 litres of Natural Weed Spray to 12 litres of water inthe following manner:• Half fill spray tank with clean water• Add the required amount of Natural Weed Spray• Fill the tank with more clean water to the required level• Agitate before useWeatherThe product can be used year round. Applications made in cooler months willtake longer to work. In warm sunny weather most weeds will die within 1-2days. Apply the product on a dry day. Rain, soon after spraying, may washspray off the foliage leading to poor results.Subsequent plantingAs there are no residual effects with the product in the soil, sowing and plantingmay be undertaken as soon as the weeds have died.CyrenSOIL INSECTICIDE CONTAINING CHLORPYRIFOS FOR THE CONTROL OF LEATHERJACKETS AND FRIT FLY2.5 - 5.0kg/ha250g - 500gGlyfos Dakar Pro contains 680 g/kg of Glyphosate. Their presence inamenity situations is often detrimental in a number of ways.Selective herbicides can eliminate broad leaved weeds in turfgrass withoutdamaging the grass itself. They need to be controlled as;• They can ruin the aesthetic appearance of carefully manicured turf areas.• Weeds affect wear tolerance and often result in sparse, muddy surfaces.• Weed presence can greatly impact on the playing surface by affecting ballroll characteristics• Broad leaved weeds compete with desirable grasses for nutrients, waterand light and can affect the health and vigour of the sward.• They produce huge quantities of seed that can spread weed into previouslyclean areas.Total herbicides are non-selective and used where all vegetation is to beremoved. Often used on hard surfaces, amenity areas, highways and industrialsites, total herbicides will control grasses, broad-leaved weeds and some willcontrol moss as well, e.g. Natural Weed Spray.Getting the best out of Headland herbicides1. Read the product label carefully taking into account any statutory requirements.Take note of timing issues. Most weeds are best controlled when they areyoung and actively growing.2. Conversely most weeds are poorly controlled in periods cold or droughtwhere lack of growth will result in poor weed control.3. Take note of water spray volumes. There are often regulatory reasons not to spraybelow the minimum water volume per area. Poor weed control may occur atlow water volumes because of inadequate spray coverage of the target weeds.4. Spraying at higher water volumes will help where weeds are large. However, ensure that run - off does not occur as this may result in poor control5. Dealing with a dry springINFORMATIONINFORMATIONTriCure ADACHIEVING CONSISTENT GRASS GROWTH IN SPRINGRESULTS THROUGH RESEARCHSpring can be a problematic time for achievingconsistent grass growth, with both a lack of soiltemperature and moisture being potentiallygrowth limiting factors. Climate analysis over thelast 45 years has shown a trend for the spring tobecome warmer and drier with a quicker transitioninto summer temperatures, particularly during thedaytime. April can be one of the hardest months toachieve consistent grass growth on fine turf andsince this often coincides with planned or recentlycarried out aeration, achieving recovery can bean issue. In degrees C / mm rainfallGraph showing Spring 2010 rainfall, temperature and growth patternsApril Dry PeriodOptimised nutritionAchieving a good surface early in the spring is allabout coming out of the winter well. Maintaininglight rate liquid and granular tonics prior to andKey Rainfall Soil Temperature Growth Initiation Strong Growthjust after Christmas is key, taking advantage of appropriate weather windows.Additional benefits can be gained by the application of a controlled releaseproduct like Multigreen Mini 12-0-44 the previous autumn, which will providespring carryover and reduce the requirement to push grass growth.Begin TriCure ADapplications earlyTo ensure that the rootzone isreceptive to light irrigationand / or rainfall, it is vitallyTo irrigate or not to irrigate ?During dry springs, it is the surface layer of the rootzone, typically the top 2”(5cm) that dries out and therefore only light syringing irrigation patterns orlocalised hand-watering is necessary to rectify the problem. There is often aconcern over potential reduction of soil temperature and therefore growth,by early irrigation. However, field trials conducted by Headland Amenityhave shown this affect to be short-lived, lasting only 1-2 hours at most.Indeed, failure to rectify surface dessication can lead to growth suppressionin its own right due to a lack of water needed for nutrient uptake. A stressedPoa annua plant can hasten the commencement of seedhead formationunder such conditions.important to apply TriCure ADearly in the year before therootzone begins to dry out, asprevention is always betterthan cure when dealing withhydrophobicity. The unique multi-surfactant properties of TriCure AD ensurethat any water applied by irrigation or falling as rain, will penetrate the dryupper region of the rootzone and be distributed evenly through the profile.Headland Amenity suggests commencing applications in early to Mid-March at7 – 10 litres per hectare and repeat on a monthly basis, ideally combined witha bioactive biostimulant, such as Turfcomplex to reduce plant stress levels.Product NameLighyTurfcomplexTriCure ADApplication TypeBiostimulantSoil PenetrantApplication Rate20 – 40L/ha7 – 14L/haWater Volume300 - 600L/ha300 - 600L/haSupplementaryIrrigationIrrigate tankmix offleaf into rootzonePackSize10L & 100L10L & 100LFilterRecommendation30# Mesh30# MeshTriCure AD soil surfactant has been trialled extensively in the field and atindependent universities, to demonstrate the benefits of its multi-surfactantchemistry. The results shown below prove how TriCure AD optimises rootzonemoisture content, without creating excess in the surface and at the sametime requires less water to be applied in order to reach field capacity.Increased irrigation efficiencyThe multi-surfactant chemistries of TriCure AD ensure that water appliedthrough irrigation systems or falling as rain, penetrates the naturallyhydrophobic surface fibre layer and is distributed uniformly through theprofile. This means that less water is lost through run-off and therefore theamount of water required to reach volumetric capacity is lower. The trialresults shown on the right indicate that 6mm of irrigation is required to reachrootzone field capacity when treated with TriCure AD compared to 12mmwhen untreated. That’s 50% less water required. See graph below.2520TriCure AD Control1510502008 Karnok et. al.- University of GAImproved dry-down characteristicsGetting water to drain quickly can positively affect growing and playingconditions. Use of TriCure AD can increase the speed of drainage resulting infaster soil surface dry-down characteristics and a more rapid return to play afterrain or irrigation. TriCure AD works by attaching to soil particles, reducing thesurface tension of water, and attracting a thin film of water close to the particlesurface. This allows optimum moisture retention for plant uptake, whilstfacilitating effective drainage and release of excessive water. See graph right.Fairy Ring TypeRate of Heritage® Rate of TriCure ADWhy TriCure AD is the best surfactant tankmix partner for fairy ring controlTriCure AD contains three separate soil surfactant technologies within oneformulation to counteract hydrophobicity on sand, soil and organic matter. This is important because superficial fairy ring tends to be active in the surfacethatch layer and so having a surfactant technology that counteractshydrophobicity in organic matter is essential. Type I and II fairy rings tend to beactive deeper down the soil profile and this may be sand, soil dominated, or infact like most golf greens, a mixture of sand, soil and organic matter. TriCure AD shows less reductionin efficacy compared to two well knowncompetitors. End user feedback has shownTriCure AD to be effective down to 7 litresper hectare, used early in the spring withapplication rates increased as temperaturesrise in the summer up to a maximum rate of20 litres per hectare. TriCure AD will notscorch the grass plant because it does notcontain any of the commonly used additionalingredients that are associated with burningThe ‘Tri’ in TriCureTriCure contains three different surfactant chemistries that treat all types ofrootzone particles, such as soil and sand, as well as organic matter, includingpeat and thatch. This multi-molecular approach provides 3 distinct characteristics, andadvantages over single molecule wetters.1 Adhesion to various surfaces including plant lignin and cellulose, attractingwater molecules and facilitating water penetration into thatch and soilorganic matter.2 Better hydration of soil particles along with a reduction in water surface tension.3 Rapid spreading and downward penetration using non-phytotoxic chemistry.or phytotoxicity. TriCure AD can be applied in the morning and safely watered-inin the evening without risk of burning.TriCure AD applicationCommence applications in March to ensure that soil moisture conditions areoptimised before any likelihood of spring drought stress (See Page 40). Applyto a dry rootzone and wash product off the leaf to maximise efficiency, though there is no risk of scorch. Apply monthly according to temperatureand stress levels on the plant with the final, lower rate application inSeptember. TriCure AD is broken down naturally in the soil by microbialactivity and therefore no residual activity will persist into the winter.T I M E I N S E C O N D SProduct NameTriCure ADApplicationUsageEarly SeasonTemperatures < 20 °CTemperatures >20 °CTemperatures >25 °CCurative SevereDry PatchM I N U T E SApplicationRate7 L / Ha10 L / Ha14 L / Ha20 L / Ha20 L / HaWater Volume600 – 800L / Ha600 – 800L / Ha600 – 800L / Ha600 – 800L / Ha600 – 800L / HaSupplementaryIrrigationWash product off leafbefore next cutWash product off leafbefore next cutWash product off leafbefore next cutWash product off leafbefore next cutWash product off leafbefore next cutPack Size10L & 100L10L & 100L10L & 100L10L & 100L10L & 100LFilterRecommendation30# Mesh30# Mesh30# Mesh30# Mesh30# MeshTriCure AD Pellets are a fast, safe and convenient method of applying TriCurewetter through hose-end applicators (available from Headland). Transport UltraTRANSPORT ULTRA IS NEW CLASS OF WATER CONDITIONER FEATURING A NON-IONIC SURFACTANT,WATER- CONDITIONING AGENTSAND AMMONIUM IONS IN A CONVENIENT PREMIX FORMULATIONTraditional spray tank acidifiers merely reduce spraytank pH by adding hydrogen ions to the spraysolution, however this has no effect on the hardnessof the water. Transport Ultra reduces both spraytank water pH and hardness, providing significantbenefits over traditional acidifiers. To understandthese, it is first necessary to understand what ismeant by ‘water hardness’.About Water HardnessWater Hardness is a method of classifying water in terms of its calcium andmagnesium content and is expressed as an equivalent of calcium carbonate.Soft water contains low levels of calcium and magnesium, whereas hard watercontains higher levels, as well as typically - bicarbonate.Calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate ions are known to react in the spraytank solution with many pesticide active ingredients, making them less available,by a process known as alkaline hydrolysis. Transport Ultra sequesters (locks up)calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate ions, preventing them from reactingwith the pesticide added to the spray tank. In addition, Transport Ultra‘protonates’ (imparts a positive charge) to the materials added to the tank, making them more available to the grass plant, resulting in faster uptake andtranslocation. The difference between the mode of action of Transport Ultraand a traditional spray tank acidifier (based on Propionic acid) is shown belowin actual analysis results of a hard water sample.Usage NotesIn order to increase the efficacy of a spray application, Transport Ultra shouldalways be added to the spray tank first before the active ingredient(s). If awater sample has not been taken prior to the application to determine theeffective dosage rate of Transport Ultra, Headland Amenity suggest using a0.25% dilution in relation to the spray volume.Classification SoftHardVery HardLighy300ppmSECTION SIX Soil and Lake treatmentsAxisJet BlackGreens Grade GypsumHeadland SulphurSampleLighyUntreatedHard waterWith Propionic acid@ 0.1%With Transport Ultra@ 0.25%%ImprovementBicarbonate (ppm)2882864584%Magnesium (ppm)76271%Calcium (ppm)1031014160%Hardness (ppm)28527611061%pH8.162.848 | Headland Amenity

Axis®Greens-Grade GypsumAXIS IS A GRANULAR SOIL AMENDMENT PRODUCT THAT INTRODUCES NON-COMPACTING PORE SPACE INTO PROBLEM ROOTZONESMINI-GRANULAR CALCIUM SULPHATE FOR APPLICATION TO GREENS, TEES AND FAIRWAYSAxis Key Points• Lightweight, porous granule to help improve problem soils• Increases the oxygen holding capacity of soils• Helps improve drainage and permeability• Helps reduce compaction• Balances air and water in the rootzone, encouraging rooting• Can increase water and nutrient availability in sandy soilsPack Size: 11.34kg bagsThe product is calcined (heated to around 1800°C) to create a stable anddurable particle that is resistant to breakdown. Its internal pore structure helpsovercome problems such as compaction and black layer by introducing airfilled porosity (oxygen) into the rootzone. In poorly draining soils, Axis helps toincrease percolation rates, moving water through the soil profile. On freedraining soils with low CEC, Axis acts to retain water and nutrients to promotecontinued growth in adverse conditions.Once applied, Axis becomes a permanent part of the rootzone. Use AXIS:• On compacted soils with poor oxygen content• Badly draining soils• Soils that have black layer or anaerobic conditions• Sandy soils that dry out too rapidly.• Areas of high traffic and wear.• Turf areas with poor root structure and development.• As a surface dressing to discourage moss and algae colonizationJet Black EZ SolupackNATURAL EFFECT LAKE DYEJet Black Key Points• Black, reflective colour.• Helps combat algae and submerged weeds• Unique packaging that eliminates the risk of staining during handling• Non-toxicJet BlackLighy1 Sachet6 SachetsLitres ofwater treated1,233,0007,400,00050 | Headland AmenityGallons ofwater treated272,0001,633,000cubic metres ofwater treated1,2337,400High volume - low weightThe beneficial effects of soil amendments depend on the actual amount (orvolume) of product applied, rather than on the weight. Axis is extremely light,so a bag of Axis contains significantly more product than the sameweight of other types of amendment.ApplicationApply after aeration, combined with the topdressing material or in a‘Drill and Fill’operation. For best results, use 14-20 bags (eg: after coring)or up to 40 bags (e.g after verti-draining) per 500m 2 .Apply Axis after aeration, in isolation or mixed 50/50 with a suitable topdressing. Drag mat or brush into holes and water-in.Axis can also be used(1) In renovation where it can be rotovated into the top 150 mm of rootzone before re-turfing or seeding.(2) Premixed into rootzone used in construction. Please contact Headland Amenity for detailed rate and application.Comparison ofthe volume of a11.34kg bag ofAxis - with thesame weightof otheramendmentsAxis granules contain a naturally occurring mineral containing thousands of microscopicdiatoms; hard, sponge-like structures which add porosity and impart other benefits to the soil.Jet Black EZ Solupak is a blend of environmentally friendly, non-toxic, watersolubleblack dyes formulated to reduce sunlight penetration.
