PFERD Tools for the Use on Stainless SteelIndustrial Power BrushesInformation about Processing Stainless Steel (INOX)Due to its particularly good forming and weldingqualities, its resistance against corrosionand its attractive appearance, stainless steel(INOX) is becoming increasingly popular forvarious products. These properties also placespecial requirements and demands on thetools used to machine it.PFERD wire qualitiesIn order to fulfil the particular requirements formachining INOX, PFERD uses a wire quality of1.4310 (V2A) on all its INOX brushes. Practicalexperience gained from industrial use confirmthat this wire quality achieves excellent corrosionresistance with optimum tool life. The wire quality of 1.4310 in INOX brushestends to become ferromagnetic aftercold processing (can be attracted using magnets). The reason for this is a change in themicrostructure caused through deformation(e.g. in wire drawing process). This change inmicrostructure and the resulting ferromagneticqualities have no influence on the quality andcorrosion resistance of the INOX wire. It retainsits corrosion-resistant properties. All PFERD brushes with INOX wire are markedblue and are suitable for use on all stainlesssteels (INOX), such as V4A.PFERD brushes INOX-TOTAL typeWe offer a range of PFERD “INOX-TOTAL”type brushes for the most demanding ofoperating conditions. These brushes have beenspecially developed for stainless steel work andare characterised by the fact that, all brushparts are made from stainless steel, quality1.4310 (V2A), ensuring optimum corrosionprotection. Please refer to pages 36-37 for detailed informationand ordering data.Stainless Steel (INOX) processingcompetencePFERD provides a comprehensive range oftools which meet the demands for work onstainless steel. We are happy to help in findingsolutions to your applicationproblems. The PRAXIS “PFERDTools for the Use on StainlessSteel” contains many valuablerecommendations for use.Our experienced sales advisorsare happy to answer yourquestions. Fordetailed information and ordering data ongrinding and polishing tools please refer tocatalogue 204.Avoiding corrosionwhen brushing INOX componentsCause of corrosionStructure changes through toothing heatbuild-up.Apart from the trim all other brush parts aregenerally made of steel, (exception: INOX-TOTAL brush types), corrosion can occurthrough contact between these parts with theworkpiece.Using the same tool for work on steel andINOX.Wire particle residues in the surface(crack corrosion).Material removal rate is too lowSolutionAvoid the heat build-up through:■■Use of a lower speed.■■Reduction in brushing pressure.■■Oscillating brushing.■■Use INOX-TOTAL type brushes.■■Avoid contact between the side discsand workpiece.■■Use pencil brushes with plastic coatings.■■Do not use brushes which have already beenused on steel, copper or other metals.■■Do not process steel near INOX.■■Avoid a high brushing pressure.■■Select a low speed.Complete removal of structural changes by:■■Extending brushing times.■■Using grinding tools.8 I 208
