Sheree challenges Gold Coast Kids to get“on <strong>the</strong>ir bikes” for charityNORTHCLIFFE Surf Lifesaver and ironwoman competitor, Sheree Merryfull, len<strong>the</strong>r support to students at The SouthportSchool in a bike riding challenge to helpraise <strong>fun</strong>ds for <strong>League</strong>.Barely taking time to recover from <strong>the</strong>epic “Coolangatta Gold”, in which sheplaced in <strong>the</strong> top ten, Sheree helped outby lap counting <strong>the</strong> 30 minute bike-athonat The Southport School on Friday19 October.Sheree cheered on some 60 prepstudents - some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m with trainingwheels – as <strong>the</strong>y attempted to beat lastyear’s bike-a-thon record <strong>of</strong> 27 laps.The bike-a-thon helped raise over$3,500, which The Southport Schoolpledged to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cerebral</strong> <strong>Palsy</strong> <strong>League</strong><strong>of</strong> Queensland.Sheree, whose sister has cerebralpalsy, was earlier this year named anAmbassador for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cerebral</strong> <strong>Palsy</strong><strong>League</strong>.Dugong Backpack wins Memento AwardAN innovative idea, team work and a local obsession with dugongs has won Redcliffe’s Cascade Services <strong>the</strong>prestigious ‘Retail Memento <strong>of</strong> Queensland Award’ for its ‘Dugong Backpack Kit’.The ‘Dugong Backpack Kit’ includes a drawstring backpack with a dugong design, comes in a pencil case witha selection <strong>of</strong> coloured fabric pastels, which are used to colour in <strong>the</strong> backpack.“It has <strong>the</strong> vibe <strong>of</strong> a colouring-book on a backpack - so it’s an activity as well as a useful item”, driving force andBee Spokes Project Coordinator, Samantha Jockel said.“We are big fans <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dugong that is a native <strong>of</strong> Moreton Bay. It is hoped that through sales we can not onlyraise <strong>fun</strong>ds for <strong>the</strong> <strong>League</strong> but also create awareness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> plight<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dugong”, Samantha says.The ‘Dugong Backpack Kit’ was a collaborative effort; designed,screen printed and compiled by staff and clients <strong>of</strong> CascadeServices, who worked on <strong>the</strong> Bee Spokes project.“Winning is affi rmation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> talents <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> clients/workers(at Cascade Services) and an indication that <strong>the</strong>y have asignifi cant and valuable contribution to make.
