New trainingopportunitiesfor PrintaboutstaffNOVEMBER saw seven ‘Table Hands’ fromPrintabout Strathpine becoming <strong>the</strong> fi rst to starta new training initiative towards receiving aCertifi cate II in Business.Training is being facilitated by Margaret Barnesand Associates, with current courses on <strong>of</strong>ferincluding Certifi cate II in business or retail .As part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> training participants will workthrough modules on customer service, usingcomputers and cash handling.The training is part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> new ‘Training Calendar’ thatis open to Printabout supported employees with <strong>the</strong>goal <strong>of</strong> assisting <strong>the</strong>m with <strong>the</strong>ir career development.“Every ‘Table Hand’ has <strong>the</strong> opportunity to undertakethis Certifi cate training. Participants also have <strong>the</strong>option <strong>of</strong> choosing to do one or two modules”, saidPrintabout Service Manager, Wendy Lavelle.“The goal is that over time individuals can apply <strong>the</strong>skills <strong>the</strong>y have learnt to <strong>the</strong> day-to-day operations <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> business.”THE Parents and GuardiansAssociation (PGA) has met regularlythroughout 2007 with a desire toimprove relationships with countryparents in 2008.We intend to develop a plan for2008 and beyond to facilitaterelationships with younger parentsand establish goals for <strong>the</strong> group,one <strong>of</strong> which will include developinga new brochure.I was delighted to hear from <strong>the</strong>Program Co-ordinator in Townsvilleregarding a parents group <strong>the</strong>rewhich will be meeting in November.I have <strong>of</strong>fered to assist in any waypossible to encourage parents tojoin with <strong>the</strong> PGA.I note in <strong>the</strong> service activity reportthat Chermside, Mt Gravatt,Sunshine Coast and Gold Coastchildren’s regions have encouragedparents to meet on a regular basis.This is indeed a step in <strong>the</strong> rightdirection towards a larger network<strong>of</strong> parents meetings.Any groups seeking a copy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Terms <strong>of</strong> Reference for <strong>the</strong> PGAshould call <strong>League</strong> Head Offi ce atNew Farm.We did manage to hold <strong>the</strong> picnicin <strong>the</strong> park even though <strong>the</strong>wea<strong>the</strong>r was extremely wet andwindy. Trusts and foundations fill <strong>the</strong> gapIT is said cerebral palsy is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most expensivedisabilities to manage. There is no ‘one size fi ts all’solution and equipment is customised to <strong>the</strong> individual.As a child grows, <strong>the</strong>ir equipment must be modifi ed orreplaced.<strong>League</strong> <strong>the</strong>rapists provide families assessment,prescription and assistance to obtain assistiveequipment such as wheelchairs, bath trolleys, computerswitches and communication devices designed toadapt everyday items so people with limited physicalabilities can <strong>fun</strong>ction more independently.Assistive technology makes it possible for childrento interact with peers on and <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> playground,engage in <strong>the</strong> curriculum by reading books, preparingassignments, and contributing to discussions andinitiating conversation. It assists adults to engage in<strong>the</strong> community, seek employment and retain jobs.The gap between state subsidy <strong>fun</strong>ds and <strong>the</strong> actualcost <strong>of</strong> equipment can run into thousands <strong>of</strong> dollarsthat families need to unearth. Pictured: Jenny and Tye Stephenson with AccessServices Job Development Offi cer, Quita Brown.Access builds towards Tye’s dream jobTYE Stephenson dreams <strong>of</strong> oneday owning his own plaster boardbusiness and he’s already movingin <strong>the</strong> right direction thanks to a littlehelp from Access Employment.Access Employment is a division<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cerebral</strong> <strong>Palsy</strong> <strong>League</strong> <strong>of</strong>Queensland that assist peoplewho have a disability to explore<strong>the</strong>ir employment options.Tye, who is 16 years old, registeredwith Access Employment’sCaboolture <strong>of</strong>fi ce six months agoafter deciding to leave school toseek an apprenticeship.Tye has attention-defi cithyperactivity disorder whichboarders on Asperger’s Syndrome,a disability that effects socialinteraction and concentration.“Access was recommended tous by Tye’s school,” Tye’s Mo<strong>the</strong>rJenny Stephenson said. “It’ beengreat dealing with Access as<strong>the</strong>y understood <strong>the</strong> challengesassociated with Tye’s disability”.“It was hard at fi rst...but I wanted to get ajob so I stuck with it”Once Tye was registered with <strong>the</strong>service, he was matched up withJob Development Offi cer, QuitaBrown who guided him throughfi ve weeks <strong>of</strong> assessment andtraining - including job seeking,resume building and interviewtechniques.“It was hard at fi rst and I felt like Iwas back at school, but I wantedto get a job so I stuck with it”, Tyesaid.After a short time Tye was luckyenough to be <strong>of</strong>fered a job as aplaster boarding apprentice withScooter Commercial, which heenthusiastically took up.Adjusting to full time work and anew environment was diffi cult forTye at first.“It was really hectic at <strong>the</strong> start with<strong>the</strong> blokes at work really testingme. As I learnt <strong>the</strong> job and workedout strategies to solve problemsit started to ease up. They’re allreally good guys now,” Tye sayswith a smile on his face.It is expected that Tye will facemany challenges throughout<strong>the</strong> apprenticeship process andAccess Employment will be <strong>the</strong>reevery step <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> way to provideongoing support.“We are in <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> organisingtuition support with his TAFEmodules to help with his numeracyand literature diffi culties” saidJob Development Offi cer, QuitaBrown.Tye continues to grow at his newjob and is enjoying learning newthings everyday. Athletic Shannice represents Queensland atNational ChampionshipsREDLANDS Child and FamilyServices client, Shannice Dodd willproudly be representing her statein <strong>the</strong> National Athletics Carnival inlate November this year.An outstanding achievement forShannice who was only classifi edeligible to compete earlier thisyear by <strong>the</strong> Sporting WheeliesAssociation <strong>of</strong> Queensland.Taking things in her stride, Shannicecompeted in 100m and 200m at<strong>the</strong> Regional Athletics Carnivalheld in September 2007 andqualifi ed in both events at <strong>the</strong> StateChampionships held in Cains.Putting in a stellar performanceshe won two gold medals fi nishingfi rst in both <strong>the</strong> 100m and 200m,and qualifying for <strong>the</strong> NationalChampionships.“Shannice is a real champion. Students Stars in backflip through timeSCREECH Theatre, fl ipped back and performed abackfl ip through time at <strong>the</strong>ir 2007 performance onThursday 20 September.‘Flipback: A Backfl ip Through Time’ follows a class <strong>of</strong>high school students on an excursion that takes anunexpected turn. They run into an alien whose favouritesong is so terrible it makes <strong>the</strong>ir friend forget who <strong>the</strong>yare. It also sends <strong>the</strong>m time traveling through <strong>the</strong>ir ownlives to work out how to restore <strong>the</strong>ir friend’s memory.“It’s a very <strong>fun</strong>ny, fast paced show because everythingabout <strong>the</strong> performance has been decided upon by<strong>the</strong> young people.
