<strong>The</strong> original databases are remaining where they are <strong>and</strong><br />

are not being copied. On one h<strong>and</strong>, copyright questions<br />

thus pose no problems, <strong>and</strong>, on the other, the data available<br />

through the portal is always up to date. <strong>The</strong> access to<br />

the technically diverse databases is being realized via a SRU<br />

gateway. Common access requires the greatest possible<br />

unification of the various databases in terms of structure<br />

<strong>and</strong> terminology. For example, single motifs carrying different<br />

names – such as “Ox <strong>Head</strong>” <strong>and</strong> “Bull’s <strong>Head</strong>” – have<br />

had to be unified. In addition, the <strong>Bernstein</strong> <strong>Project</strong> has<br />

drawn up a m<strong>and</strong>atory word list (Watermark terms – Vocabulary<br />

for watermark description; see www.bernstein.<br />

oeaw.ac.at/twiki) that is in six languages: German, English,<br />

French, Italian, Russian, <strong>and</strong> Spanish, these being the languages<br />

used in the various lines of watermark research that<br />

have developed over the years.<br />
