Drinking excessive amounts <strong>of</strong> alcohol over long periods <strong>of</strong> time can lead to alcoholismand cause problems with parts <strong>of</strong> the gut and stomach. It is linked to cancer, especiallywhen combined with smoking and can be a cause <strong>of</strong> malnutrition. It can be verydamaging to major organs such as the heart, brain, and liver. In its most serious formthis type <strong>of</strong> damage can lead to death. While moderate amounts <strong>of</strong> alcohol (two standarddrinks a day for men and one for women) can give some protection from coronaryheart.What is excessive drinking? The amount <strong>of</strong> alcohol in a drink is measured in terms <strong>of</strong>a unit called the “standard drink”. For men it is recommended that theydrink no more than 21 standard drinks per week, with a maximum <strong>of</strong> six in any onesitting. So that means no more than 14 cans <strong>of</strong> beer a week with a maximum <strong>of</strong> fourcans in a sitting. For women the limits are lower with a maximum <strong>of</strong> 14 standarddrinks (14 glasses <strong>of</strong> table wine say) per week and no more than four in one sitting.If you drink more than what is recommended in these guidelines then you drink toomuch. All the men’s problems as listed can occur if you drink more than five standarddrinks per session, two or more times per week. However, given that there isconsiderable variation in the way that alcohol affects individuals, then correspondinglynot everyone will suffer from the same health problems, even if their drinking habitsare the same.Binge and long term excessive drinking can also weaken bones in men. Bone formingcells are prevented from <strong>do</strong>ing their job and calcium, a mineral that helps to hardenbone, is excreted into the urine.As if to add insult to injury, drink more than about 50 handles <strong>of</strong> beer a week for a longtime and men risk becoming more feminine.
