Byrd, in his capacity as thesenior member of the Senate AppropriationsCommittee, was responsible for obtaining morethan $22 million in federal funding for theconstruction of the building. The new facility has enabled the medicalschool to increase its class size by 50 percent,as well as expand the Diabetes Center whichhouses the state’s only endocrinology trainingprogram. The gastroenterology section has alsobeen expanded, allowing for the development ofa specialized Digestive Diseases Center. At the dedication, Byrd said, “We all knowtoo well that our fellow West Virginians havetremendous needs when it comes to health care. Our state’s residents consistently rank high inincidences of disease, injury, and poor healthbehaviors. Our mountains are majestic, but theyhave also been a major impediment to thoseneeding health care. Helping West Virginiansto better access and receive quality healthcare services has been central to my effortsthroughout my public service.“Good health is the greatest of all God’sblessings. It is my hope that this new $23million clinical center and the facilities andprograms that I have established at MarshallUniversity over the years will provide thetools needed to make a significant differencein improving the quality of life for all WestVirginians. Perhaps the elusive cure for canceror the common cold, or other medical miraclesnot even conceived at this time, will bediscovered right here at Marshall.”Senator Byrd and Dr. Charles McKownSOM “Practitioner” yearbooks looking for a good homeIf you are interested in a yearbook from 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 or 2002,you can stop by Room 3409 at the MU Medical Center, 1600 Medical Center Drive, and pick one up or email Linda Holmes (holmes@marshall.edu) for detailsand one can be sent for $5.00 to cover postage and handling.

Benefactor Summer/Fall 2010RA top National Institutes of Health officialshared the spotlight on March 31 with morethan 70 medical research projects by students, resident physicians and faculty members duringthe annual Research Day of the Joan C. EdwardsSchool of Medicine. The event was held on the ground floor ofthe Marshall Medical Center, followed by anaward celebration and recognition of members ofthe school’s Academy of Medical Educators. The event’s guest speaker was Dr. GregoryGermino, deputy director of the NIH’s NationalInstitute of Diabetes and Digestive and KidneyDiseases, which funds research into obesityand diabetes, among other disorders. His talkwas titled, “Dia-besity: converging problems, emerging science.”Germino is considered to be a world-renownedexpert in inherited kidney disease, and hisresearch has generated numerous high-qualityantibodies, cell lines and cell culture systems, and a series of genetically altered mouse modelsthat closely mimic human polycystic kidneydisease.Research projects presented by Marshall’sbiomedical sciences graduate students, medicalstudents and medical residents ranged from casereports of unusual problems –“Look to the right,Research Day showcases“dia-besity” insightsand you may pass out” – to multiple studiesinvolving cancer, obesity, heart disease andother health problems. Among the findingswere:• Premature infants who receivedbreathing assistance via continuouspositive airway pressure (the treatmentused for adults who have sleepapnea) instead of conventionalmechanical ventilation showed bettergrowth and neurological screeningscores.• Capsaicin (the spicy ingredient in chilipeppers) strongly inhibited growthof small cell lung cancer in multiplehuman cancer cell lines, possiblyopening the door to its eventual use as anutrition-based treatment tool for thesecancers.• Medical literature about post-traumaticstress disorder strongly suggests thatmultiple factors – including geneticsand problems in fetal development– contribute to the disorder. Furtherstudies might find a genetic componentthat would help explain why somepatients cannot get relief frommedications now used to treat PTSD.Congratulations!Dr. John B. Walden, professor and chairman, Department of Family andCommunity Health, has been selected by the City of Huntington Foundation,Inc. as one of this year’s Wall of Fame inductees. Too good to be true? Seems like it, but truenonetheless. And many of our friends are takingadvantage of this opportunity. Why does theSchool of Medicinepromote charitable giftannuities? To help ourphysicians and friendswho want to makelarger gifts, but can’tafford to reduce theircash flow. Also, it helpsour donors who areplanning to provide abequest make the giftSample of OurOne-Life Annuity Rates*Age Rate65...........................5.5%70...........................5.8%75...........................6.4%80...........................7.2%85...........................8.1%90 & Over..............9.5%Two-life rates available.*Effective July 1, 2010now so they can take advantage of the income taxcharitable deduction. And for older donors, anannuity may actually provide a larger payout fromthe asset than they might otherwise receive.A deferred payment charitable gift annuityworks well for younger donors who want to giveto the School of Medicine and, at the sametime, supplement their retirement programs. Forexample, the donor would designate a gift, forexample $10,000, for a gift annuity which wouldbe “programmed” to begin payments at retirementage–the longer the deferral period, the higher theannual payment. Even though the donor will notreceive payments from the annuity for severalyears, an income tax charitable deduction isavailable for the year in which the gift is made.By careful management, the Foundation isable not only to make the scheduled annuitypayments, but to have enough left over to help uscarry forward our mission. In other words, theseannuities benefit the donors and the School ofMedicine. Our gift annuity program is loaded withmany benefits, and we want you to know aboutthese. For more information, please call Mr.Ed Zimmerman, director of planned giving, at304.696.3739. He will be happy to send you aconfidential report showing you how a gift annuitycan benefit you.

Benefactor Summer/Fall 2010TThe Daniel J. & Teresa R. CowellMemorial ScholarshipDr. Daniel Cowell created a scholarshipin honor of his parents, Daniel J. andTeresa R. Cowell, in 1999 to help afirst year medical student with financial needachieve his or her goal of becoming a doctor.Since then, eight future doctors have benefitedfrom this generous award.“My parents were very hard-working,” hesaid. “My father, who grew up in an orphanage, never went beyond the third grade. Yet, he wasself-educated and was a talented painter. He metmy mother at art school, where she would goon to become a teacher. They put me throughschool without complaint. I thought it wastime to recognize them. And because Marshallgave me so much, I decided to establish thescholarship at Marshall.“One never achieves anything of valuealone,” Cowell continued. “No matter whatyou do in life, you have others to help you. Therefore, it is essential to give back to thehonest, hard-working people who don’t havemuch. These are the people who keep the worldgoing, and they should be recognized. Whatbetter way than a scholarship to those who needa hand?“Whatever my role was, from chair ofthe Department of Psychiatry to a part-timeprofessorship the last several years, I tried tocontribute in every way possible. I miss thepeople there very much.”Cowell retired in 2002 as chair of theDepartment of Psychiatry, having been in thatrole since 1994. He continued in his positionsof professor and associate dean for graduatemedical education. He was promoted to seniorassociate dean for graduate medical educationin 2005. During his tenure as associate dean, hisspecial accomplishments included developinga core curriculum series for residents andoverseeing Marshall’s implementation ofresident duty hour restrictions. He is particularly proud of a program heset up within the psychiatry residency in 1994where students spent eight weeks at a hospicecenter. “I felt they needed to know as much aspossible about the late stages of dying,” Cowellsaid. “The experience became so popular thestudents continued to volunteer and evenformed bonds with the families. It was the firstprogram of its kind in the country. I feel thisexperience is important to the development ofthe medical students as physicians.”Before coming to Marshall, he spent 33years with the U.S. Public Health Service, including serving as director of the Office ofMental Health and chief psychiatrist for theFederal Bureau of Prisons.Daniel’s wife, Diana, is retired as a medicalsocial worker from Hospice of Huntington andAshland. Retiring OB/GYN department chairmanRobert Nerhood honored byconference room namingAfter Robert Nerhood joined the facultyas chairman of the Department ofObstetrics and Gynecology in 1992, hisleadership helped build a successful practice andresidency program at the School of Medicine.“When I joined the faculty there werethree physicians and we were in the Doctors’Memorial Hospital on Sixth Avenue – theold brick edifice,” Nerhood said. “My numberone assignment was to establish an activedepartment and get the necessary doctors andspace to develop a residency program.”Nerhood initially recruited his faculty fromphysicians in the community. The departmenteventually moved to Hal Greer Boulevardacross from Cabell Huntington Hospital withan expanded faculty of seven physicians, including a perinatologist, an oncologist and anurse midwife. The first application was madefor a residency program and, after a provisionalperiod, approval as an accredited four-yearprogram was granted in 2004. Since its onset, more than 30 residents have graduated from theOB/GYN program.“At the end of the 20th century, we movedto the fourth floor of the Marshall MedicalCenter,” Nerhood said. “It was interesting howwe got the penthouse suite. No one else wantedit because it didn’t open to the atrium. Weended up with a good deal because we have aconference room, decreased noise and bettertemperature control.”There is now a faculty of 15, and theexcellence, dedication and support of thatfaculty is unquestionably the reason for thedepartment’s success, according to Nerhood. In July Nerhood retired from the Schoolof Medicine and the practice of medicine. Forthe last year, he served as senior associate deanfor clinical affairs in addition to chair of hisdepartment. In tribute to his leadership, theSchool of Medicine and the Department ofObstetrics and Gynecology are honoring himby naming the department’s conference roomthe Dr. Robert C. Nerhood Conference Room. The gifts received for this honor will be used toestablish an endowed fund for the Departmentof Obstetrics and Gynecology’s education andtraining programs.“This was an unexpected honor,” Nerhoodsaid. “It almost makes me blush. I had noexpectations of anything like this. It is great.“The most important thing I want to sayis... the reason I have been successful is that Ihave had incredible support from the medicalschool at all levels, beginning with the deanand extending to the staff. I could not haveaccomplished what I did without them doingwhat I asked and making me look good.”Nerhood certainly will not be bored as aretiree. “I am going to play golf in August, paintthe interior of my beach house in Seabrook(continued on page 54)
