As ayoung woman she attended the University of Saigon in southern Vietnam. She wasarrested for her political stand against the Diem regime in 1962 and spent six months ingaol without trial. She married an American diplomat, Klaus Loewald, and left Vietnam forthe United States in 1964. She migrated to Australia in 1970. Her 1987 autobiography,Child of Vietnam, explores her experiences as a child and young woman duringtumultuous times in Vietnam’s history.The poem ‘Be good, little migrants’ by Uyen Loewald, comprises eight five-line stanzas.The structure is simple and repetitive and the language accessible.
