2010 Home & Business Contest WinnersThe <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Norwalk</strong> appreciates those who participated in this year’s Home & Business Beautification contest because they helpkeep our community looking beautiful. During the July 20 <strong>City</strong> Council meeting, the Community Promotion Commission and <strong>City</strong>Council members commended and awarded the Home & Business Beautification Contest winners for their efforts.Home Beautiful, Home Improvement, Business Beautification, and Multi-Family were the contest categories. The programs objective is to help youthdevelop and build leadership skills, discipline, problem solving skills, and life skills. In addition, all Recruits have the opportunity to improvetheir physical fitness by participating in weekly physical training. Cadet Program meetings are held on Wednesdays from 5:00-7:00pm at the<strong>Norwalk</strong> Arts & Sports Complex. All participants must be between the ages <strong>of</strong> 13 to 18 years old and have a minimum “C” grade or better inall school courses. Unfortunately, they may become nuisanceactivities if they are held on a regular basis. Tohelp regulate the frequency <strong>of</strong> these events, the<strong>City</strong> Council approved a requirement that yardsale permits must be obtained before the salemay be held.When obtaining a permit, please providethe following information.• If the property is rented, the yard saleapplicant must be living at the residence. Arental contract showing the applicant andthe property owner or manager’s name andtelephone number are required.• A valid California Driver’s License/IdentificationCard and a current utility bill are needed toconfirm residency.• Community yard sale applicants must providea map and list <strong>of</strong> participating addresses.Residents planning on having yard salesand community yard sales must obtain a permit.Permits are available at no charge at the PublicSafety Department or Community DevelopmentDepartment at <strong>City</strong> Hall.A yard sale is for selling used or unwantedhousehold or personal items, furniture, toolsor clothing from a property on an infrequentbasis. She and her family stayed in Arkansas forapproximately 3 years before being able to make her way back to her home town <strong>of</strong> <strong>Norwalk</strong>, California.Assembly Member Warren Furutani <strong>of</strong> the 55th district introduced Assembly Bill 37 – Japanese-AmericanWorld War II Honorary Degrees, in December <strong>of</strong> 2008. This bill allows for Nisei students who were unableto receive their college degrees due to the evacuation, relocation and internment <strong>of</strong> Japanese – Americansduring World War II, to receive their degrees. Stella along with Mitsi Yasukochi Funakoshi were honorarygraduates at Fullerton Junior College commencement ceremony on Thursday, May 27 <strong>of</strong> this year.
