Withthese grants, the Walt Whitman Archive iscreating a comprehensive edition of the Civil War writings of WaltWhitman. The War profoundly shaped Leaves of Grass, the firstmasterpiece of American poetry, and Whitman extensivelydepicted and analyzed the Civil War in journals, notebooks, letters,essays, memoirs and manuscript drafts. The hundreds ofdocuments that give voice to Whitman’s experience of the war willbe electronically edited, arranged and published. In addition tomaking these documents freely available, this work will help tomodel for other scholars best practices in creating, publishing andsustaining electronic editions. The project will provide scholars andstudents a site where they can read, evaluate and experience a setof texts that provide unique insight into the American experience ofthe Civil War.Seefeldt, WilliamHistory/Center for DigitalResearch in the HumanitiesWilliam Cody Research Project$131,374 Buffalo Bill Historical Center7/1/09 – 8/31/12William Seefeldt, assistant professor ofhistory, has received support from theBuffalo Bill Historical Center to develop aseries of thematic digital datasets that canbe used to provide historical context for thecenter’s Cody Papers project. The digitaldatasets will include the rosters of thevarious Wild West shows from published programs and otherbusiness records and biographical sketches of the participants,including the Show Indians. They will be marked and encoded forinclusion in the larger Buffalo Bill digital archive collection hostedby BBHC. Other research projects may include a databasecontaining encoded full-text transcriptions of newspaper coverageof the tour stops throughout North America and Europe and ageospatial database of Cody’s travels and residences throughouthis lifetime that could be used to create maps and visualizations bydate or location.88arts and humanities $50,000 or more
