The book follows five members <strong>of</strong> threegenerations <strong>of</strong> a mixed-blood Montana family from approximately1850 to 1950. Peoples <strong>of</strong> mixed ancestry spoke English <strong>and</strong>indigenous languages <strong>and</strong> helped smooth relations between nativepeoples <strong>and</strong> Anglo newcomers. After about 1870, with the arrival<strong>of</strong> more white settlers <strong>and</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> mining <strong>and</strong> loggingindustries, many mixed-blood people were marginalized <strong>and</strong>pushed onto reservations. Using federal records, archived personalpapers, newspaper stories <strong>and</strong> clippings <strong>and</strong> catalogs frommuseum exhibits, Graybill has been able to recreate the history <strong>of</strong>one remarkable family, which in turn tells the story <strong>of</strong> the evolvingAmerican frontier.Kooser, TedEnglishAmerican Life in Poetry Project$204,300 Poetry Foundation1/1/05 – 12/31/10The Poetry Foundation, in partnership withthe Library <strong>of</strong> Congress, supports theAmerican Life in Poetry project, an initiative<strong>of</strong> Ted Kooser, the 2004-2006 Poet LaureateConsultant in Poetry to the Library <strong>of</strong>Congress. American Life in Poetry is a freeweekly column for newspapers <strong>and</strong> onlinepublications featuring a poem written by a contemporary Americanpoet, chosen by Kooser, with a brief introduction written by Kooser.The sole mission <strong>of</strong> this project is to promote poetry.
