Transfer <strong>of</strong> Sorghum & Millet Production,Processing & Marketing Technologies <strong>Program</strong> in Mali$5,250,000 USAID10/1/07 – 9/30/12John Yohe, with support from the U.S. Agency for InternationalDevelopment, is directing this project designed to improvesorghum <strong>and</strong> millet farmers’ productivity <strong>and</strong> incomes intargeted areas <strong>of</strong> Mali by moving sorghum <strong>and</strong> millet productiontechnologies onto farmers’ fields, linking farmers’ organizationsto food <strong>and</strong> feed processors, <strong>and</strong> commercializing processingtechnologies. Ultimately, the project’s goal is to improve the supplychain from the farm level to the consumer.Interdisciplinary TeamInfrastructure for the Enhancement <strong>of</strong> SystemsBiology Research & Development at UNL$4,329,877 NSF7/1/07 – 7/31/10This grant supports multi-campus collaborative research betweenbiologists <strong>and</strong> engineers for creating a strategic researchniche in epigenetics – the study <strong>of</strong> heritable changes in genefunctions not associated with changes in DNA sequence. Much<strong>of</strong> what comprises the complexity <strong>of</strong> multi-cellular organisms isprogrammed within the network <strong>of</strong> interacting molecules – protein,RNA <strong>and</strong> DNA – known collectively as chromatin. Engineersare creating nano-devices for delivering molecules into cells forbetter underst<strong>and</strong>ing the role <strong>of</strong> chromatin in cell function <strong>and</strong> itsresponse to the environment.22AWARDS OF $3 MILLION OR MORE
