Centerresearch addresses pathogenic <strong>and</strong> therapeutic aspects <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong>the most devastating viral <strong>and</strong> neuroimmune disorders facing theglobal community, including AIDS, HIV-associated cancers,Alzheimer’s disease <strong>and</strong> chronic infections caused by herpesviruses <strong>and</strong> a new class <strong>of</strong> infectious agents called prions.Kaposi’s Sarcoma & Human Herpesvirus in Africa$3,599,105 NIH-NCI7/16/10 – 4/30/15Since the onset <strong>of</strong> the AIDS epidemic, Kaposi’s sarcoma hasbecome the most frequently diagnosed pediatric cancer insub-Saharan Africa. It is associated with Human Herpesvirus 8(HHV-8) <strong>and</strong> Kaposi’s Sarcoma Herpesvirus. The project seeksto underst<strong>and</strong> how these viruses are transmitted to children bystudying children in Lusaka, Zambia. The goal is to establishthe rates <strong>of</strong> transmission <strong>and</strong> to identify virologic, immunologic<strong>and</strong> ethnographic risk factors that predispose children to HHV-8infection.
