Swanson, DavidComputer Science and EngineeringUS CMS Tier 2 Center$3,445,767 NSF through UCLA5/1/05 – 12/31/11Bloom, KennethPhysics and AstronomyDominguez, AaronPhysics and AstronomyDavid Swanson, research associate professorof computer science and engineering, directsthe Holland Computing Center, which hosts aUS CMS Tier 2 computing site, funded by theNational Science Foundation’s US CompactMuon Solenoid (CMS) Research Programthrough a subcontract with UCLA. KenBloom and Aaron Dominguez, both associate professors of physicsat UNL, are collaborating with Swanson and HCC staff to analyzedata from particle collisions at the Large Hadron Collider at theEuropean Organization for Nuclear Research near Geneva,Switzerland. UNL researchers are involved in one of the two largestexperiments. CMS is designed to investigate a wide range ofphysics, including the search for the Higgs boson, extra dimensionsand particles that could make up dark matter. The experimentcreates so much data that a ‘tiered’ hierarchy of computingfacilities has been created to analyze it; UNL is a member of thathierarchy, hosting a subset of the data.Tsymbal, EvgenyPhysics and Astronomy/NebraskaCenter for Materials and NanoscienceMaterials Research Science & Engineering Center:Quantum Spin$6,321,899 NSF9/1/08 – 8/31/14Grouverman, AlexeiPhysics and AstronomyEvgeny Tsymbal, professor of physics andastronomy at UNL, leads the MaterialsResearch Science and Engineering Center(MRSEC). The center was established in 2002with a grant from the National ScienceFoundation and involves scientists from theDepartments of Physics and Astronomy,Chemistry and Mechanical Engineering, and the School ofBiological Sciences. MRSEC projects focus on fabricating andstudying new magnetic structures and materials at the nanometerscale. The research has applications in advanced computing anddata storage, handheld electronic devices, advanced sensors andfuture medical technologies.18AWARDS OF $3 MILLION OR MORE
