Pope, KevinNatural ResourcesAngler Behavior in Response to ManagementActions on Nebraska Reservoirs$3,147,776 Nebraska Game and Parks Commission1/1/09 – 12/31/13Kevin Pope, assistant unit leader-fisheries ofthe Nebraska Cooperative Fish and WildlifeResearch Unit and associate professor in theSchool of Natural Resources, with supportfrom the Nebraska Game and ParksCommission, will document the currentparticipation levels of anglers in Nebraska’slentic systems. In particular, participation levels of generic anglinggroups will be quantified among specific water bodies, and amodel will be developed to describe generic angler participation(spatial and temporal) within a region. Such a model will helpmanagers better determine appropriate lake-specific managementobjectives, given the dynamic nature of angler participation, andwill be important for increased effectiveness of angler recruitmentand retention activities throughout the Midwest.Rilett, LaurenceCivil Engineering/Nebraska Transportation CenterRegion 7 University Transportation Center$7,629,000 DOT-RITA10/1/06 – 6/30/12The U.S. Department of Transportation’sResearch and Innovative TechnologyAdministration has designated UNL’sMid-America Transportation Center (MATC)as a regional university transportationcenter. MATC is a consortium with UNL asthe lead institution with regional partnersKansas State University, University of Kansas, University ofMissouri-Rolla and Lincoln University of Missouri. The NebraskaDepartment of Roads and the Kansas and Missouri Departmentsof Transportation also are key partners. Laurence Rilett, Keith W.Klaasmeyer Chair in Engineering and Technology in UNL’s civilengineering department, directs the center. Its focus is “improvingsafety and minimizing risk associated with increasing multi-modalfreight movement on the U.S. surface transportation system.”MATC will focus on safety research related to rural transportation.Key safety research areas include traffic control, animal crashes, safer at-grade railway crossings and work zones, and thedevelopment of more effective and economical roadside crashbarriers. The university transportation center program supportstransportation research, education and technology transfer thatpromote scientific innovations in a variety of transportation modesand disciplines. Region 7 serves Iowa, Kansas, Missouri andNebraska. It is one of 10 regional university transportation centersin the nation.14AWARDS OF $3 MILLION OR MORE

The goal ofUNL’s ESQuaRed team (Laboratory for Empirically-based SoftwareQuality Research and Development), part of the Department ofComputer Science and Engineering, is to develop methods formodeling how people interact with software and hardwarecomponents and with each other in order to analyze the quality ofthe system as a whole. The information obtained as a result will beused to improve the dependability and safety of the systems.AWARDS OF $3 MILLION OR MORE15
