Thegrant is through NSF’s Robert Noyce TeacherScholarship program, which aims to encourage talented science,technology, engineering <strong>and</strong> mathematics majors <strong>and</strong>pr<strong>of</strong>essionals to become K-12 mathematics <strong>and</strong> science teachers in“high-need” classrooms. The new math program will cover tuition,fees <strong>and</strong> a stipend for 16 students who are pursuing master’sdegrees from the Department <strong>of</strong> Teaching, Learning <strong>and</strong> TeacherEducation <strong>and</strong> certification to teach math for grades 7-12.Fellowship recipients also will receive a supplementary stipendfrom UNL while they teach for four years in a high-need schooldistrict. The grant also will provide pr<strong>of</strong>essional development <strong>and</strong>stipends for 24 strong, master’s-degree-holding, K-12 teachers whocommit to teaching in a high-need district for five years. Theselected “master teaching fellows” will take courses that will givethem the skills they need to improve math education in theirschools <strong>and</strong> school districts.
