Also <strong>in</strong> the Seattle study, 67 people with diabetes present<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>in</strong>itial non-traumaticamputation between 1984 <strong>and</strong> 1987 were compared with 236 consecutive people withdiabetes seen for other unrelated surgery (del Aguila et al, 1994). There was nosignificant difference between the case or control groups <strong>in</strong> age (63.6 v 16.1 years) orduration <strong>of</strong> diabetes (12.4 v 10.9 years). Presence <strong>of</strong> prior foot ulcer was<strong>in</strong>dependently associated with risk <strong>of</strong> lower extremity amputation (OR 10.9, CI 4.6-25.5).
